Amelia Earhart Plane may be found Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

So apparently some researchers have identified a piece of debris that they believe belonged to Amelia Earhart's plane in Nikumaroro, Kiribati. It adds credence to a theory that Earhart did not crash land in the pacific, but instead ran out of fuel and made a forced landing on the island. They presumably became castaways and eventually died.

Well, it looks like we'll find out one way or another soon enough, assuming they can get funding for a more extensive expedition to try to find the plane and the bodies.

Response to: Do you use an Instant Messenger? Posted October 29th, 2014 in General

Well, apparently wall street still thinks that there's money to be made in instant messaging, at least for secure communication across their own industry. There's also Line and Whatsapp (450 million users) and Snapchat (100 million users). Then there's this guy who says he would quit immediately, if his employer prevented him from using GChat at work. Also, I suppose texting is a sort of instant messaging too.

When you think of instant messaging its easy to think of it as old tech, but I guess it is becoming relevant again in slightly different forms.

Response to: How much is too much sleep? Posted October 29th, 2014 in General

The most I had slept at one time was a good 20 hours straight. I had stayed up for about 4 days straight studying for finals and when I finally finished them off I completely collapsed on my bed.

These days I actually sleep about 7 and a half hours each night, if you factor in the time it takes to get to sleep. How much sleep you need varies by age, activity level, and under individual quirks. Everyone has a slightly different amount of sleep they need to function. There's a good infographic here that shows that.

Elderly people generally need the least sleep, which might account for why many older people tend to wake up a little earlier. That's some untapped potential for border security operations, if you ask me.

Response to: worst film adaptations Posted October 29th, 2014 in General

I don't know if anyone else mentioned M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, but it was a pretty horrible adaptation of the series. Will all the bad films he's made you have to wonder how he gets to keep making films. I guess they must be profitable.

Dragon Ball Evolution was pretty terrible as well. In fact, I think it was actually worse than the above film. They really dragged the material through the mud and then took a bit dump on it with that film. This should have been an easy film to make reasonably well. Instead, they probably won't try again for decades.

and then there's theEragon movie. Could have been another profitable franchise for Fox, but they screwed that up too.

I'd go with a no, just because the guy from Pawn Stars endorses it. That doesn't exactly scream of honesty and integrity. The safety razor market is super competitive and you can probably find a higher quality product at a better value if you do a little research. Just the price of getting him as an endorser and running all those ads is bound to mark up the price.

Just to an internet search for best safety razor or razor reviews and I'm sure you'll find a better option for yourself.

Not really, I'm just saying, you know, worst case scenario, right?

Yeah, I guess if Russia, China, and US nuked each other and the EU fell apart the UN could feasibly fill the power void.

Of course it would be way more interesting if somehow Catelonia took over the world. They would need something to hold the rest of the world hostage with though, like a massive stockpile of satellite mounted EMPs or something. Once you knock out everyone's grids the last country standing would automatically become the most powerful, assuming they could effectively take advantage of the short term chaos.

Don't get any ideas Catelonia!

It's still a possibility. If they came to rule, they might start abusing their power a tiny bit, realize how good it feels, and dominate.

So, what do you name it and why did you choose that name?

Whats the word? Are we plateauing or is the CDC scrambling to cover their asses?

I wouldn't' say that we're plateauing yet. Last week saw a 4.1% increase in overall deaths over the previous week. That is the highest weekly increase in months. Sierra Leone and Guinea saw an even higher increase in their individual countries.

However, some countries (Nigeria, Senegal, Spain) haven't seen a new case in over a month. It also looks like there has been a significant dent in the increase of Liberian cases, although that may have more to do with data lag than the actual decrease of transmission. Information moves more slowly in that part of the world, so it is best to give some extra time before drawing any conclusions.

As for the CDC scrambling to cover their asses, well it looks like individual states are getting sick of the CDC's more lax guidelines and taking their own steps to protect their people. That is hardly a point in favor of the CDC's handling of the situation in the United States. The US also has the highest incidence of Ebola in the developed world, so draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

Response to: Strange Realizations Posted October 28th, 2014 in General

I realized some time ago that my enjoyment associated with hanging out with people, and I mean all people, follows pretty much a bell curve. The enjoyment increases up to a point and then if I overdue it, it begins to decrease rapidly. For people I enjoy more the bell curve can be quite a bit wider, but there still is a bell curve. It is best to limit my time with a person, if I can, to correspond with the highest value segment of the bell curve and find a reason to skip out when it starts heading south. If I'm being honest, I see other people do it to me too. I can hardly blame them though. Life is short, so why waste time with a person whose company you're not enjoying.

Of course I don't tell people this or necessarily consciously plot it out every time it happens, but that is what's happening. It may seem harsh, but you're really not doing yourself or that person any favors by prolonging things way past the point they stop being enjoyable for both involved. The most striking example of this I see is when people continue on in a relationship way past this point, for the sake of their partner even if they don't have children or any other sort of legal commitment. There's a good chance your partner is not enjoying things as much as they used to either, so you might as well break things off so you both can find greater happiness with someone else. Easier said then done though, right?
