I am not your teacher. Go, read a book.

Here's a map of all the countries that have called themselves socialist at one point or another. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't call all the rest of the countries uniformly normal. I mean hell, some of them are downright weird.

Because exactly what we need is for mass numbers of US soldiers to contract the disease while at the same time escalating fears of the extremely superstitious Africans in those areas and make them think we're the ones causing the disease right? ... right???

Just quarantine those countries. Make them no fly zones in or out. You're there? Too bad. You're stuck there.

Ever tried to quarantine an entire country? Neither has anyone else. I'm also pretty sure it would be much more expensive to try to quarantine 3 countries as opposed to trying to beat the illness. The two countries have literally thousands of kilometers of borders and the countries that border it are in no position to enforce a full military blockade of the countries.

If you wanted even a chance of succeeding you would need to put something like half a million troops on the ground and about a thousand ships to blockade the oceans. Even then someone is bound to get through and the quarantine is bound to make them even more motivated to do so. When all was said and done it would likely cost a $100 billion or more, assuming it even succeeded. That is over 100x the cost of the current US military operation there right now and that is not even including the economic cost of imposing no fly zones.

So yeah, massive waste of money and no guarantee of success. Why do people keep bringing this up as a good idea?

Just need to convince James Cameron that a film on this subject would raise the bar.

Who knows, he might be able to pull a Titanic and make a billion of the film. Then again, if they don't find anything it would just be a waste of money. He has plenty to burn and I'm not convinced this would be that much riskier then say Avatar was.

Beer... Well I've always been more of an import guy, but Yuengling is good. I was going to say "I think the only Belgian beer I've had is blue moon" but after fact checking, I see it's American. Hmmm. I really like St. Pauli Girl, which is German, and very good, but I've always had doubts that it even remotely resembles actual German beer..

If you live in the United States you probably have access to quite a few fine Belgian brews if you go to some of the larger wine and beer stores. If you can, try to find a Chouffe Houblon Triple IPA if you can. It's a fine pale ale and well worth trying.

Brazil Extreme Drought Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

So, Brazil is experiencing its biggest drought in decades. It has caused close to $10 billion in damages and is a contributing factor in the fact that Brazil's economy hasn't grown in the last two and a half years (since the drought started). Reservoirs for its largest city in the country have shrank to 3 - 5% of normal capacity and there is water rationing all over the country.

As one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world, this drought has been a contributing factor in increases in the prices of coffee, oranges, beef, and other agricultural products. There's also a question of how how much longer Brazil's important rainforest can survive the drought without long term damage. As one of the planet's most important carbon sinks and an important source of new pharmaceuticals the loss of vast swaths of an already shrinking rainforest, would be a major blow to the world.

So, the CEO of the world's largest company has come out publicly, which is pretty cool. Who knows, maybe it will convince more public figures to come out as well and by extension more people in general. It is still dangerous to come out in many parts of the world, but at least this is another step in the right direction.

At 7/12/14 11:36 AM, Reiska3 wrote: Lets say Europe never colonized America, what do you think would be the result from then til now?

At some point Asia would have tried to colonize America and then roughly the same thing would have occurred as when the Europeans arrived. Perhaps a few more would have survived, but most of the deaths were a result of disease and the same illnesses that existed in Europe also existed in Asia at the time.

In all likelihood it would have either been the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, or the Tsardom of Russia that first arrived in the Americas. Neither empire was known for being particularly less brutal than the European powers, so I imagine they would have followed a somewhat similar track as the European empires.

At 7/12/14 11:36 AM, Reiska3 wrote:
Also, are native americans its own race, or is it just tribes of people who lived in America before

I don't think that all native americans could be said to belong to one race. There were several migrations of asian peoples to the americas over time and in between several minor ice ages. This lead to the development of a number of distinctly different peoples that could be said to be their own races, based on isolation from other peoples on the continent. Then again, race is such an imperfect term, that I'm not even sure it's worth trying to describe native americans in that way.

It would also force human beings to move to more temperate climates, so there might be a positive effect on Northern ecosystems.

Most Disturbing Subreddit? Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

If there's one thing that Reddit is good at it's courting controversy, for all the wrong reasons. There have been all kinds of sick, twisted, and disturbing subreddits. So, what is the most disturbing subreddit you have come across?

Make sure you describe it fully, so we don't wind up wandering into something that is completely traumatizing by accident.

Yeah, we should probably give up hope now.
