I agree with simon. The characters weren't developed enough for me to feel that bad about them. The idea is that if some character is having something bad happen to them, I feel empathy because I like them and know them, but I didn't get that far. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie.

Just to clear it up, an allegory is the manifestation of an intangible idea, feeling, or emotion such as love, God, or brutality, as a concrete character or other element in a story. A symbol is the representation of a concrete idea like apartheid with another concrete idea.
Merriam-Webster.com says of the word allegory:
1 : the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or generalizations about human existence; also : an instance (as in a story or painting) of such expression
