If you want nice distortion, have the sound level of the amp down as far as possible, but have the sound on your guitar at full blast. Then turn the gain all the way up. Having the sound on the amp up usually causes fuzziness for me and does nothing to the heavyness level. Then, mess around with the treble and bass knobs. Try having bass and Mid all the way up and treble all the way down and see if you like that.
