The Street Figther "NG Team" app is stunning. Though I think I like the general uniformity of the new design the best. Nice work. I can't wait until the bugs are out and all the features are back up. The leveling up seems a bit aggressive, but what you gonna do? 2.5 years to level up to 37? Not that it matters, it's just that you said there are 60 levels. How long do you expect me to live?

I actually liked the graphics and thought it was a decent enough....certainly better than some of the crap that passes around here because there's a tit or a clock or a titClock in it. It's an awful thing to make a joke of though. And if that were it, I suppose I would be alright with his poor decision to make a game out of it. But to attempt to profit off of it? Granted, I'm sure that wasn't his intent initially. It's just a ridiculous request aimed at trying to trap a few people dumb enough to give him money, or dumb enough to think that he'd really take it down...if it was paying off, what reason would he have to take it down? I want to say that NG should take it down. But I wouldn't want to give that much attention to it. If you guys remove this one, it'll become the next turd of the week....People will begin trying to harvest these horrific events for NG infamy. Newgrounds certainly doesn't need bad press. People will always try to ride on the wings of events like this. Newgrounds doesn't need to give them further cause to do so. I'd say don't talk about it, don't take it down, and certainly don't give it fame it does not deserve. It's a decent game...not great...not horrible.

Excellent idea. I've always though the specific dropdowns were unecessary. Violence and humor are the two most usually out of place. The overall score is really the only value anyone cares about anyway.

I'll be picking up a copy soon. My friend, and business partner, and I are really looking forward to watching it. We got an office to get some work done and then we'll probably spend too much time watching Broken Saints. Oh well.

Hey, help me out with one thing though. How is it that FOX releasing the DVD doesn't bring in any revenue for you? That doesn't compute well. I understand they front a lot of the money, maybe all, to create the DVDs and get them into stores, but it's hard to follow where along the line it doesn't bring in any revenue for you guys. I'm not saying that money is everything, but it just seems like there should be at least a little cash involved. Can you elaborate, for those of us who don't know how the movie biz does work?

Thanks and good luck. I hope you're right and NG does start attracting "talent scouts".

Excellent idea. I had deleted a submission, to see if the batting average would change. When it was higher than I had calculated I was confused. Now I get it. That's a fair rule, though it might not be a bad idea to use like the top 1/3 of a user's submissions, to properly weight it. Just a thought.

This is just an idea to make your office more homely and gives it a NG touch.

home·ly ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hml)
adj. home·li·er, home·li·est
Not attractive or good-looking: a homely child.
Lacking elegance or refinement: homely furniture.
Of a simple or unpretentious nature; plain: homely truths.
Characteristic of the home or of home life: homely skills.

Ha ha, whoops. I'm sure that's not what you meant ;)

This actually brings up a big question I've been wanting to put out there. We might have a fair amount of spare room in the office, that is, more space than we can afford to fill with employees. So if there are creative people who work from home and want to get into an energizing office environment, I think this would be the place. You wouldn't be paid, but you wouldn't be obligated to NG, either. The question would be what you can bring to the table in exchange for space in the office - such as doing free work for NG in your spare time. Does that sort of thing sound fun? :)

Yes, that sounds FUN. I have an office job right now, but I hope to go out on my own eventually. My skills far exceed my paycheck and with a few more I'll be a one-stop shop. So my own business/freelance might be a move of mine in the next few years. If you're coming in the area, I'd definately be interested in helping out NG and maybe even sharing some space with you guys. Any chance the place you bid on is any of those I sent you a while back from the Lansdale area? ;) Doubtful. But you may still be in the area. Shoot me a n email email. I'd be happy to spend some weekends lending fixer-upper type help if you've got work to do on the place. That's probably a bit more compelling of a contribution than just buying some stickers :)

Topic: Abuse of Newgrounds...

Posted: 02/16/05 10:26 AM

Forum: General

Leave it to the admins to decide if its abusive or not of their system.

I think its not, because it probably gives NG more trraffic than NG gives traffic to them :o

That's an excellent point. Again, I'm not talking about blocking them, I'm just talking about the spirit in which it's done. It seems rude to Tom and Wade. Tom and Wade made a successful site without having to beg for money from the public or withold features, so why should these other sites be exempt from it?

And no I'm not taking two stances......in all cases I'm talking about respect.

Oh, and I have donated money through those donate buttons before, why? Because I respect and support the work of contributing authors. I own the DVDs of several of the authors found here on NG, because I believe it's a good thing to support this type of work. I've tried to help out NG in ways other than just giving it traffic or sending it money.

I'm not fired up or anything. I was just curious if other people consider these sites takinga advantage of NG disrespcetful. Tom and Wade worked very hard to have this audience to profit from. Sites who post here to profit from it do not, they simply click submit.....and fill out a few form fields :) I undestand they help traffic and traffic = more advertising money, but the other 200,000 entries that don't profit also help traffic.

Anyway, I'm don repsonding. I'd really just like to see what people's thoughts are. I'm not going to try to change anyone's mind.

A good point, except that there are tons of games and toons out there that have the same effect and aren't whoring out NG. Take the latest sensation, Interactive Buddy for example. Half a million hits in a little over a week, free, no intentions other than to build a fun game for the NG crowd. Look at the top 50, they've generated millions of hits for NG and not one of them is a partial movie or game. None of them are asking for money to see more.....

If they can't beat out the free stuff, what makes them worth paying for?

NG does it, I'm sure they can find a way too. Plus they were making money before they submitted to NG.

PopCap.com is an excellent example. They are doing tons of business and never come anywhere near NG.

Topic: Abuse of Newgrounds...

Posted: 02/16/05 09:52 AM

Forum: General

Is anyone else tired of flash gaming sites taking advantage of Newgrounds in order to sell their own products? It's nothing new, but it seems that lately there have been more than usual. They come here to use the power of a free site to promote a site or games that are not.

I come here to see the work of people like myself; an average joe who likes to create games and toons because it's fun, not because I have something to sell. What I don't care to see is games with portions locked out for the online version.....and most of these games aren't that much better than some of the free, fully available, homegrown games that come straight from the core NG community.

Plus it just seems rude. I mean Tom, Wade, Stamper, etc have all worked very hard to keep this site free for us. And as a result they have created an incredible forum for people like us to share our work, hell, to even have a reason to make this work (what fun is making games or toons is no-one ever see's them). Now that Tom and Wade have this huge captive audience, sites like MiniClip, this new guy Stefan Jones, KerberosGames (there was a rash of them last week), etc. come in posting incomplete or medicore games in order to make money and to promote themselves.

And by doing so are abusing the very spirit of NG, if I may sound so hippy about it. NG has always been about supporting artists, remember the 'donate' and 'amazon' links Tom added and the speech he made about that? People lashed out at him because they thought he was whoring himself out to Amazon, only NG fans found out later that he did it without affiliation with Amazon (a potentially lucrative idea) just to try to help out the NG users.

I'm not bitter about these people being here because they have professional teams working on these games or anything. I welcome quality productions to NG, James Farr (Xombie), Adam Philips (Brakenwood), Minushi, Broken Saints (yes I know they're selling a new DVD, but what they submit is complete and existed as a part of NG long before they ever dreamed of becoming so popular as to warrant a dvd). My disdain boils down mostly to these game developers who try to entice us with partial crappy games and hope we go buy their full versions. I suspect that they're getting very little business from NG users, but I also suspect that if it cost them money to post here they wouldn't bother. It's that "I will because it's easy" mentality that bothers me.

I don't propose we actually do anything, because technically they have a right to be here. And all the best to them for being able to make a living out of the things tha tmost of us here love to do. So unless they're paying Tom for the advertising, I think they belong somewhere else.

Granted, there's a little bit of justice because I've noticed these games never do all that well, but still......

So what are your thoughts NG?
