Topic: Don't Touch My Chicken

Posted: 04/09/04 11:36 AM

Forum: Network News

My friend Xeni made a post about Burger King's Subservient Chicken promo website where you can tell a dude in a Chicken suit what to do. "touch your toes" "moonwalk" "play air guitar" "die" - that kind of thing. Weird, yes but not as weird as this next bit. Turns out it's just a collection of flash videos that are triggered by keywords. Intrigued by the concept, hacker NEMESIS started backwards engineering the API and came up with a list of what those keywords are and it looks like someone over there was holding the pickle in more ways than one. "masturbate" "suck" "show your tits" "cock" "bonghit" "take your pants off" "pussy" "vegan" (yes, vegan WTF??) etc can all be found in the code. So of course, Xeni blogged that too and included, for your reading pleasure a master list of the keywords (here's a mirror of the list). Take a look at that and search for something, you'll be surprised what they included, remember this is a Burger King promo aimed at making kids convince their parents to buy them fast food.

That's not all. Shortly after posting this she was contacted by someone
claiming to be the designer who built the site, asking her to take down the
list. She says:

"He's asking us to take down the copied list, because it
kills the magic of the ad campaign. For now, we're leaving it up -- it's
available on the Burger King website for anyone who bothers to look at the
source code...

Burger King obviously didn't intend for this list, which includes many
obscenities, to be widely viewed -- but they built the website carelessly.
The list of commands is publicly accessible for anyone who knows enough
about how websites work to "ask" the webserver for it.

They wrote it, they left it someplace where the public could find it, and
now they are going to have to deal with the consequences of those actions. I
encourage everyone reading this to copy it, post it and spread it around to
anyone and everyone you can, then sit back and watch the shit hit the fan.
Enjoy!

Topic: The FCC is Bush's lapdog

Posted: 03/10/04 12:30 PM

Forum: Network News

Jeff Jarvis has been reporting daily on what's going on with the FCC and Howard Stern, and it's getting more serious by the day.

Howard Stern's source in the FCC tells him today that there have been meetings at a high-level in the agency strategizing when to fine Stern based on the impact it would have on the election of George Bush. Some argue that fining him now will make him a martyr and help him rally voters against Bush; others say not fining him will make him look like a boy who cried wolf; others say they should get rid of Stern now because, to their surprise, much of his audience does vote. and he can have an impact on the election.

If that is true, that that could not be a clearer violation of the First Amendment: an agency of government using fines for political ends to affect political speech.

If that is true, if any such discussion occurred in the agency, then they should be hauled before Congress or courts right now.

If that is true, what's the difference between this and Nixon's enemies list or J. Edgar Hoover's harassment of civil rights and antiwar leaders?

So let's find out whether it is true: Stern should sue and subpoena their asses. Or a legislator with balls should call for a hearing.

That's only a small portion of what he's talking about today, Go read the rest.

I was gonna post this on the front page but figured a buncha people would freak out and whine and blah blah blah so i decided to just put it here instead. For the past two years a friend and I have been collecting news links and tracking down info about what's going on in the US. We've put it all together on one website, just the facts with bunker buster bomb-proof sources like CNN, BBS, ABC, and tons of goverment archives. If you give a damn about America and whats going on, please take a minute or two and check it out.

Topic: want a free camphone?

Posted: 07/02/03 12:22 PM

Forum: Network News

OK, Tom made me promise to explain this is NOT an ad. No. It's more like a secret tip off. There's this site, Textamerica that hosts moblogs like mine. Moblogs are like blogs but with photos, and mostly photos taken with cell phones. Well, they are having this contest to design some better templates for their site. In return they are giving away some free cell phone camera things. The secret tip off is that I'm one of the judges and i can say for sure that most of the entries SUCK. So, if you have any kind of web design sense at all, go over there, spend a few minutes, and you might win. You don't need a camera phone to use the site, you can submit images via e-mail from anywhere else. If that still isn't making sense, read my site as I explained it more there, I don't want to hog any more space here. Good luck!

Forum: Network News

At 6/19/03 03:50 PM, PeePeeBoy wrote: when thousands of people die from a violent disease, it's INSTANT COMEDY GOLD!

PeePeeBoy, the reason this is instant comedy gold is because neither thousands of people have died, nor is it violent as the general media would have you believe and as you so quickly swallowed. If you read anything other than the headlines, you'd know that LESS THAN 800 people have died from SARS WORLDWIDE, and most of those were very old or suffering from other illnesses and a sever cold might have done the same to them. There's almost NO reported cases in healthy adults.

It's Comedy Gold because it's yet another case of people freaking the fuck out over nothing. More people are killed by lightning, by car wrecks, by Drive Bys, by just about hevery damn thing out there than Sars. It's a joke itself.

And compairing it to 911? man... that's sick.

Maybe next time it would be a good idea to know a little bit about what you are talking about before you open your mouth.

I'll make this short so as not to hog too much front page space. I just put up a new site called sarsart.org with Xeni from BoingBoing and we're getting flooded with traffic from the New York Times and other stories being written about it. Since Newgrounds is helping with some of the image hosting, I thought I'd throw out an official request for SARS related flash games and clips. I've got a link running back to the portal searching for "sars" in descriptions so if you've got something, put it up soon because a lot of people are headed that way. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

I'm usually not one to jump on the bandwagon and pat celebs on the back when they decide to speak up for one cause or another. As far as I'm concerned just because some can act or write a catchy song doesn't mean they know what the hell they are talking about when it comes to politics. Obvious exceptions to the ones that do. However Sean Penn wrote a letter and paid an assload to get it published in The Washington Post. I think it's a really good letter but close to no one is even taking note. It's kind of long and I didn't want to clog up the front page with it so I posted it here for everyone to check out. I'd like to hear what you all think about it...

Topic: My own private Columbine

Posted: 10/16/02 08:25 PM

Forum: Network News

I went to see Michael Moore's new film Bowling For Columbine this weekend and I have to agree with the reviews I've been hearing, it's the best thing he's ever done.

I'm not going to spoil it for you. You know it's about Columbine, you know it's about guns, you know it's about the good 'ol USA. There's much more there though, and when you go to the theater you will see. The media, Bush, and Charlton Heston all get shown in a really nice light. Needless to say I walked out of there with a big fat smile.

After seeing it a friend reminded me of a column written by infamous love advice columnist Dan Savage called FEAR THE GEEK: Littleton's Silver Lining that was published right after "it happened." I thought this was an amazing article. I wrote something similar on whatever stupid website I was writing for at that point, and got a lot of shit for it. I won't link that, because Dan says what I wanted to much better. Guess that's why he gets paid. If you haven't read the column, you really should go read it right now. He talks about how insane it was that people were shocked about this, because honestly, it was only a matter of time.

Even more amazing is a reply written by a former Columbine High School student. I'd never seen this until another friend sent it my way recently. I'll let you read that for yourself, but if you want to download a copy this should help.

"Finally, an article addresses what is really going on here ("Fear the
Geek: Littleton's Silver Lining"). I actually used to live in Littleton,
and went to Columbine High School. I totally agree with this story. When I
went there, I was having the same exact problems and no one cared at all.
One day I was walking outside during lunch when some jocks decided it was
my turn to be beaten. One of the started hitting me to impress his
friends... I hit him once in the face and ended up on the ground. One
teacher was right there and did nothing to stop it. I was sent to the
proncipal's office and told that I should try to 'fit in' with the rest of
the students and not wear black clothes. All I can tell you is that on days
like that (and there were many), I could have shot them all. I ended up
leaving the school, and driving to the next town every day to attend an
alternative high school. I learned more there in the first week than I did
in the three years I went to Columbine. When I talk with friends who went
there, not even one person was surprised this could happen. We were just
surprised it didn't happen sooner."

-Jason DeTrempe

I read that and all I cound think was "right on." People talking about schools being a safe haven for kids are smoking crack. Where the hell did they go to school? Little House On The Prarie High? I could go on for hours about the crap I put up with in school, or worse the crap I saw other people have to put up with. I got suspended my freshman year for bringing a gun to school. Luckily for me that was YEARS before anyone got the balls to smoke some other kid, otherwise I would still be in jail. Even I had no plans for it. It was a broken bb gun for crying out loud, but only I knew that, and I was sure that if some nameless people (who are probably still in Bradenton dreaming about their HS football glory days) thought I might snap and do something really stupid, they would just leave me alone. The point is, the kids who have the cool clothes, drive the nice cars, don't have zits, get laid, are the kids the schools smile on. The kids who don't, don't. The whole system is designed to make kids fall in line, and it has no mercy on those who don't. These kids, who take guns to school and shoot other people, hell kids who shoot other people even outside of school are sick. They are totally out of their heads, but having been though the public (and private for that matter) school system, I know how they got that way. There come a point when a lot of kids have to make a decision to rise above the steaming pile of shit they are stuck in and show everyone else up by actually doing something with their lives, or giving in to the hate and doing something like this. If people realized how many kids made that decision on a daily basis, and congradulated the kids who made the right choice, we'd be in a hell of a lot better situation. Me, I'm surprised this dosen't happen more oftin.

Topic: Back In Black

Posted: 04/19/01 10:24 AM

Forum: Network News

Your Momma's so fat, I had to take a train and two busses just to get on the bitches good side.

That's right, I'm back. Sorry it's been so long since I posted anything, I know how hard it can be not hearing from me. That's why I eased my way into the conversation with a "your mom" joke. It's the best way to say "Hello, I'm confident, and worth getting to know". Really. Try it next time you see your friends, or are meeting your girl/boy friends parents, or see a cop on the street. Good times all around.

So, what's been kicking ass in the portal recently?
Taipan 3000 is out of control. I can't even imagine how long this took to make. I'm blown away. I was also pretty impressed by one called scrap book: mon vs fita. The animation is really cool, and it's an idea that hasn't been done so many times my eyes bleed when I see it. -cough-stickmen-cough! Something else in there that I totally loved was R.I.P. Tony Danza. I'm not really sure what it is about animations like that, and like this
and like this that I like so much. Maybe it's that you have no idea where it's headed. Maybe it's that for hours afterwards you still can't figure out where it went. Maybe it's that whoever made them must have been on bug spray when he made them. Who knows, but I'm into it for sure.

What else has been going on?
Lots over at Bonrop. Check it out and let me know what you think of all the new stuff.

One more thing, if you just downloaded flash, figured out how to save stuff and made an animation of a ball rolling back and forth, please, please, please, don't upload it to the portal and say "be easy on me, this is my first animation". I'm begging you. No one is going to be easy on you. Just play with it a little more and come up with an idea and make something that is actually worth watching. We'll all thank you for it.

Rock out,
-sean

Topic: Old Punk VS New Punk

Posted: 04/10/01 06:14 PM

Forum: General

I'm going to skip a huge chunk of this argument, not because I think it's useless or anything but because there's already too many cooks in the kitchen and no need to throw in more opinions. I will chime in on the Less Than Jake aspect. Before I do let me give some back ground - I am 26 and have been going to "shows" (that's punk lingo for concerts for anyone who dosen't know) since I was 12. You can do the math and see where that puts me. I also ran a label for about 8 years. Toybox records. I put out a few of the first Less Than Jake records ever. 2 of the first 7"s. I can vouch that no matter what label these guys are on, or what store their records are for sale in, they are as punk as it gets. They have never done anything they didn't want to do, and more cases than not, have made sure that things were done their way or not at all. Plus, as far as I know, they still respond to every peice of mail they get themselves.

As for the rest of the stuff, it's all opinion. There's always going to be people who like one thing more than anther and then people who think they are nuts. Find the stuff you like, and listen to that.

I'm vegan, have been for 8 years now, been vegitarian since I was 12. I have TONS of friends who eat meat and we all get along fine. To each his/her own. I think anyone telling anyone else how to live there life sucks, regardless of what side they are on. The one thing I will say, is that anyone who says they are vegitarian because of how the animals are treated, and still eats dairy products needs to do some serious research.
