Actually about 170 years, that's a typo. The first people to write about fundamentalism were Dwight Moody and Arthur Tappan Pierson, who lived in the 19th century.

It's all just a bunch of fairy tales to show the development of the universe and man, because when the Bible was first released, almost everyone was a peasant farmer who wouldn't understand the concept of evolution or the big bang. In addition to this, Christianity Fundamentalism is only about 70 years old and suddenly everyone thought that these stories are true.

If any one wants proof of this, there's a quote of St. Augustine (It's on wikipedia, just type in Augustine of Hippo and go to the 'Biblical interperation section) saying that the bible should always be taken metaphorical is basic logic and scientific reasoning contradicts is, and with his massive influence on Christianity this was accepted by the Catholic church.
