I came across some of those too, for example these guys made a couple of apps that will send Midi CC information through Wi-FI (you need to download an application which creates a virtual midi input on your computer) and allows you to control any parameter in any DAW or synth with your device. One uses the accelerometer and sends two signals based on how you hold the device. Another gives you two touch pads and lets you control four parameters with two fingers. I don't know if I'll ever use it but it's a pretty cool and useful concept.

Not sure why you guys think it's a saw, it seems pretty obvious to me that it's based on a pulse wave with PWM (pulse width modulation). Try any synth with a pulse (aka square) wave setting with like a knob where you define the pulse width. Then assign an lfo/envelope to the pulse width. That should be a close approximation to the basic timbre of the synth in question. Not sure what you're using, but any synth with a pulse wave and like a mod matrix should do the trick easily. If not you could simply automate it

On a bit of an unrelated note, if you have an expression pedal, you can make a pretty neat wah-like effect by having the pedal control pulse width

I'm just saying, it doesn't have the same effect as it does in real instruments, since it's all digital, and you're just literally pitching down the sound. Whereas if you pitch down a real instrument, you actually change the accoustic/timbre properties slightly.

Oh, sure, then I guess we pretty much agree.

Uh wrong, sure you can, some DAWs (like Logic) have microtuning features which allow this, many software synths can be tuned like that as well.

If you shifted some pitch to 43200hz, then yeah maybe you'd get a difference, that difference being your audio being inaudiable.

Actually, if you change the sample rate of one track in Audacity, it does change the pitch and tempo, but that's just an undesirable side effect. Of course, if you do that, it will still not turn concert A to 432 (A is 440 hz, not 441 hz).

Apple loops is just a format, similar to acidized wav or rex files... you can make them yourself, so technically they're perfectly fine. Though the apple loops included in Logic and Garageband are very easy to recognize, and must be used very carefully, preferably not at all. Loansindi's post sums it up nicely, common sense helps as well :)

At the moment im using repeat, but this doesnt give me the option to have gaps and other bits in between.
If someone could help it would be great.

You could work with region aliases: press shift+option while you drag a region in the arrange window. That will create a region alias, which does not contain data but only refers to the original midi region, much like the relationship between audio files and audio regions. So you can make a lot of copies of that midi region quickly, which will always be identical to the parent region. If you want to change one of the clones, double click the region and choose "Real Copy" in the dialog box to make it an independent region.

That tends to sound a bit hollow and awkward on deep kick samples though since you're boosting frequencies that aren't really there in the first place. I've found layering the kick with something like a click (harder transient) and then a gritty/noisy open hat sample does that job better.

this is kind of a silly argument, since nearly everybody is going to be finding new synths at some point or another.

I haven't tried FL so I won't try to compare the two but don't you agree that it is indeed a large bonus when you get several great instrument and effect plug-ins with the price, so you don't have to buy a lot more stuff later?

I really don't understand what you're talking about, unless you're exaggerating and you mean like 160-180 bpm, that seems to be quite popular on NG. Still... most "popular" music here is much slower than that

If music where sex the guy going 200bpm would finish early rather then take his time and enjoy it at 94 bpm.

Just curious, what exactly is a "comb lead"? I don't think that name is used a lot and you probably made it up but I suspect you're talking about something with a comb filter?

Anyway thread starter, the emphasis in Drum n Bass is on, well, the drums, and the bass. Usually anything else is secondary, but you can be very liberal about it, it's a quite wide genre. Mostly anything goes as far as I'm concerned, synths and violas and banjos and printers and grass.

Wait why are you adding reverb to a sub bass? Or anything with bass frequencies, really. Unless your goal is to completely drown yourself in mud, don't do that. Please.

Here's a solution for you mid range/punch needs: 1) Scratch the reverb! 2) Add something to it
That something could be another synth one or two octaves above it, that way you have some more high frequency content and you can make the bass riff/melody more clear and pronounced. Leave the sub as clean as absolutely possible, then you can take the synth you just added, and add all you need of reverb/modulation/distortion/condoms to that. Depending on what plugins and program you're using, may need to use two channels/synths/tracks, one for the sub and one for the other.

Man, I wish, what a beautiful dream. Half of the time the audio files we have to approve are so astonishingly horrible that the only ethical thing to do would be to ban them (to protect the public's ears from death by awfulness). Some times, I can't look into the mirror the next day, because I know something died inside the soul of an innocent listener who had to endure the incredible pain caused by the submission that I, personally, approved.

One time, not very long ago, I approved an abnormally terrible submission, and a bit later this guy listened to it. He committed suicide a few days later. If I banned the submission, he would have lived today. Normally, I wouldn't be able to handle the shame, but regularly listening to all these criminally dreadful submissions have slowly transformed me into a cold-blooded, inhumane monster.

4 days tops is when there aren't 500+ entires waiting to be validated.
Im almost 100% positive that they dont have 500+ waiting to be validated -_-

Ok, we do actually have that many people waiting to be validated though, nathanallenpinard is an audio mod and should know.

Topic: Jazzy Chords

Posted: 09/25/09 01:03 PM

Forum: Audio

Bjra I think the chord progression in that sonic song is Cm9 - Dm9 - A#m9 - Cm9 (All of the chords are minor 9th chords, which are built from the intervals 1 - b3 - 5 - b7 - 9, i.e the root note and the notes that are 3, 7, 10 and 14 semitones above the root. Perhaps the 3rd and the 5th are omitted in that song though).
I think the "spacy" mood you're talking about is due to the sound of the minor 9th chords and the unusual, somewhat dissonant relationship between them. The pretty synth, reverb and modulation amplifies that mood, but it certainly isn't the only factor (a simple minor/major chord won't create a similar sound, it doesn't matter how much reverb you pack it in with).

thats ok! we just use a different scale which has all those notes. D major has HAS ALL THESE NOTES

Huh? B# is C, and F major 7 is not made from that, it's made from the notes F A C and E. There is a C in the F major scale (F G A Bb C D E), but there is none in D major (D E F# G A B C#). The chord progressions you posted below are interesting but really you sound more like a drunk than like an expert in that post.
