Not that it's necessarily right or anything, but a lot of businesses do take credit for patents/work/inventions. For example, if an engineer at General Electric comes up with a patent, General Electric is the owner and designee of the patent. The engineer's name is still on it, but it belongs to the company. Schools generally don't operate this way though, which makes this a little unusual. Whenever I see theses, the professor is given credit, for instance.

I cited the same study earlier so I know where you come from. However, one problem I see with your thinking is that there are plenty of married couples who do use birth control. There are many reasons, like not wanting kids right then or they've decided they've had enough kids.

I don't think we should necessarily be teaching 10-year-olds how sex works, but by all means, teach them the "boys have a penis, girls have a vagina" stuff and about sexual abuse. I remember when I was in the first or second grade they did teach us how to report people touching you in weird ways, so I think they could also revisit the sexual abuse education there. Hell, they could even combine age-appropriate sexual abuse education with the whole "don't talk to strangers" spiel.

As people marry later in life, the whole idea that they will save themselves for marriage becomes more and more unrealistic. Granted, many people still do, but it's becoming more of a rarity. That's why people need to know how to be responsible about it.

There was a notification in my campus inbox that one of the adult students died in their campus residence today. Right now they're not releasing any more information. It's bothering me though because there's a chance I know that person, and all sorts of scenarios are running through my head.

My dog used to be scared by stuff. By any chance, did you move furniture or something? That could upset him.

In the meantime, keep an eye on him. Like, is he eating and drinking? If he isn't that can indicate a problem.

Response to: Disappointing Endings Posted February 19th, 2010 in General

Oh, as for disappointment? I'd go with the movie Jumper. The protagonist was extremely unlikeable, so I had a hard time sitting through the movie to begin with. But then the ending was all "WTF?! That's it?" I realize Jumper was based off a book series, but surely they could have made a better adaptation.

I didn't pick the movie, my boyfriend did. He paid for the tickets so I guess I shouldn't complain (too much).

Response to: What do you think about Cincinnati? Posted February 19th, 2010 in General

Well, your football team has finally gotten good. When I was living in Ohio last year, I saw something funny. Someone had one of those Bengals plate borders reading "WHO DEY?" and the Ohio vanity plate read "SOMEDAY." You got pretty close.

There's a saying in Ohio that there are three big "C" cities, and the first two like to pretend the third doesn't exist. XD

Other than my layovers at the Cincinnati airport, I have not been there. However, I am very fond of Cincinnati chili. However, I do remember one year I was at the airport. The main company working there was on strike (forget the name) so the place was quite dead. You guys have a very nice airport. Not so much in places like Atlanta.

FUNK, don't even get me started on strange weather. Granted, I'm not in the area that keeps getting hammered by snow, but we've gotten enough bad weather to freak us out. My part of the country is used to it, but areas like Maryland aren't.

Response to: Planned Parenthood and 10 year olds Posted February 19th, 2010 in Politics

I was roughly 10 years old when they taught me about sex in school. I was in 4th grade They didn't go into anything major, it was just age-appropriate "boys have a penis, girls have a vagina" stuff. The puberty stuff came in 5th and 6th grade, and the major sex education, with STDs, childbirth, etc. came in high school. So for me, the age isn't too much of a stretch. Mind you, I was in Catholic school in 4th grade.

I see nothing wrong with teaching sex education. Considering the teen pregnancy/STD rates in the more conservative states, they need MORE sex education.

You may have recently seen the study about abstinence education combined with comprehensive sex education, and how it prevents teen pregnancy. That's what I was taught. (Pennsylvania forbids abstinence-only education.) While they did tell us about condoms and whatnot, the greater stress was that abstinence is the only 100% way of not getting pregnant or getting AIDS. What's important about this form of education is they give the real numbers and don't make up lies about birth control effectiveness like the religious-based programs do.

Myself, I'll be doing a bit of gaming over break. :P

Lovely. We're having an icestorm. My dad called to tell me. I hadn't looked outside since coming back here. It had previously been snowing hard, but now everything's covered in ice. By the time I need to leave tomorrow there'll be at least half an inch of ice on my car. If it's real crappy when I leave tomorrow afternoon I'll ask Dad for a ride. He has the 4X4 and I don't. Granted, they don't necessarily work on ice, but I trust it more than my compact car.

Hopefully the rumor isn't true and we don't have a snowstorm next week when I need to drive to Pittsburgh.

Response to: Emergancy brodcast's on TV Posted February 16th, 2010 in General

Sometimes they break into radio broadcasts around here with that noise, but when the music stops and you hear the dial-up modem esque noise, it's real. What was strange, though, was the one time they broke into the local radio with a tornado warning about an hour south of here.

I remember one time in October 2001 when they had the noise while my parents and I were watching TV and there was a terrorist alert for Pennsylvania. Here's what happened: Some kid at a TV station in Scranton was told to test the Emergency Broadcasting System. He hit the wrong series of buttons and it ended up issuing a terrorist alert for the entire state. Needless to say, he doesn't work there anymore.

Generally around here, the only TV station that uses the tone for an actual emergency is our PBS affiliate. The others either break in for tornado warnings or just scroll across the bottom of the screen.

Also, the local weather girl is hot.

Some little kids are just like that. I remember a three-year-old my cousin's boyfriend was taking care of. He picked up all her toys off the stairs and she started screaming. When he asked what was wrong, she said "You ruined my plot to kill Grandpa!"

Then when she was about a year older, she was playing in the grass near a sign that said "KEEP OFF THE GRASS." He said to her, "Primera, what does that say?" She looked at the sign, then back at him and said, "That doesn't apply to me. I can't read everything yet."

Either that kid is the real-life Stewie Griffin or she'll grow up to be one hell of a politician. Maybe both.

The remarkable thing about this case is it's rare for a woman to go postal. However, she did shoot and kill her brother in 1986. It was declared an accident back then, but I guarantee that case will be reopened now.

It seems this woman went postal since she was being denied tenure. Some of her students also described her as aloof and generally not a good professor. This makes me wonder if she has some mental problem and just snapped. Whatever the case, she does fit the shooter profile.

Showering with someone else is one of those things that seems like a good idea at the time but really isn't. Only one of you gets to stand under the water. Therefore, one of you is not taking a shower, and you have to keep switching. It's not exactly an amorous situation either.

Response to: Snow Storm / Ustream Snow Cam Posted February 10th, 2010 in General

I went off the road today. The stretch of road I was on in my apartment complex hadn't been plowed, and the snow was whipping around. For both reasons, I was using the orange snowpoles on the sides of the road to gauge where the road was. Suddenly, there was a whiteout, and I felt myself slide. I tried backing up out of the snow I hit, but to no avail. I got out of the car and then realized I was off the road. I began shoveling myself out, and a neighbor came by and gave me a push. It still took me 45 minutes to get to class, even though the college is 10-15 minutes away from my place.

They extended the snow warnings here, and I was surprised to hear Wade was under a blizzard warning. BTW, what county is Perkasie in? I thought it was Bucks but I don't know the eastern half of the state very well.

Response to: - The Regulars Lounge Thread - Posted February 10th, 2010 in Politics

Well, I can take solace in the fact that two other people besides me went off the same stretch of road while I was gone. My car seems okay. I popped the hood and checked fluids, and other than wiper fluid, which I am constantly using, they look good. So at least now I'm guessing it's not a leak. Also didn't see any puddles or whatnot under my car. I do need to take it in for an oil change at the end of the month anyways.

You'd think I'd have been smart enough to ask for a ride when I initially had to stop on that road to clean my windshield again. Even when it was clean, the snow was whipping around and it wasn't plowed so I was using the orange snowpoles on the side of the road to tell where the road was. Then came a whiteout, and I felt myself slide. I tried backing up to no avail, then got out of the car and realized I was off the road.

Went off the road in my apartment complex this morning. A woman came by and gave me a push. The only thing concerning me is that some of the snow that was right up against the joints of my car was yellow. There wasn't much yellow snow, and the other woman guessed that's either washer fluid (no, mine's blue) or grease. I'm gonna guess grease because I was parked at school for an hour and there was no fluid underneath the car. It just makes me wonder. The only other yellow fluid I know of is brake, but I have no problems other than sliding on the road today due to bad conditions.

I don't know if I necessarily agree with that test. I consider myself more moderate than it says I was. Maybe several tests would be in order to get an accurate standing. Then again, I know I'm a little strange. I'm pro-choice, pro-gun and pro-capital punishment, and those three don't always go well together. I think it may also be worthwhile to take the test over a few times. I know that my political stance has changed since I turned 18, and other people's probably do as well.

As for the page itself...yeah, people are stupid, but I tend to take these types of polls with a grain of salt. Half the time there's a bias behind the questioning.

I never saw a problem with Dante's view of things. No one has to be happy or tolerant if their sister/aunt/mother/whoever hitches their wagon to a loser. If that had been me my parents would have thrown me out of the house. I agree, he should be mad at his sister for sleeping with a loser. That and depending on how old she is, she's probably ruined her life with a kid at a young age. I'm just happy I was given up for adoption. My real mother was 13.

I had my old moments in Spanish class this week. We had to practice preterites, so one of the things we had to answer was "What did you wear when you were 10 years old?" I told the truth: I wore pantalones de Hammer. The undergrads were confused. I'm also apparently the only person in the class who read American Girl books. When I got to the library I had some catching up to do. When I was a kid there were only five of them. Actually, I still have my Molly doll. I got her for Christmas when I was nine. I wanted Samantha but apparently they didn't have her. Dad, the coin collector, immediately relieved me of the wheat penny Molly came with.

Been talking with my boyfriend and one of my friends from Pittsburgh. They got walloped. Walloped enough they even closed the casino down there. They left the one up here open during one storm we had, but there were only three people there. On the upside, I guess you could get any machine you wanted. Rumor has it there'll be another big snowstorm next weekend, and it'll head up my way this time.

Funny thing is the boyfriend and the friend only live 10 minutes from each other, so I relayed a lot of info between them. As for where I used to live in Ohio, the power's still out there. I'm happy I don't have to put up with that anymore. I'm in a new complex where the lines are underground.
