The guy basically crafted the entire "brat pack" phenom of the 80s with countless smash hit flicks that I'll never forget. But also was of course the blueprint for modern day stuff of the same vein. Shocked to hear he died at 59. He also wrote more modern stuff like Drillbit Taylor.

Have fun with it. I've got a Graphire, but it sits around collecting dust. My plan is to pick up the new generation of Cintiq, whenever they come out. I hear the 21ux and 12wx heat up beyond belief.

Posted: 07/13/09 03:52 PM

I can't really give critique as it looks spot on for a redesign. I can offer the fact that it looks a million times better than the ridiculous Armada Megatron, assuming that was his last official upgrade before this Revenge of the Fallen movie. As for that one, it looked a bit too HR Giger to fit into the Transformers mold IMO.

At 7/13/09 01:51 PM, MindChamber wrote: Just like my old Optimus thread, I will be redoing Megatron in my style and How I would've liked to have seen him in the movie. The second movie really get him much closer to what I would have liked, I just think there are a few things megatron wouldn't need. 1) He's not going to hide, so keeping him cybertonian makes perfect sense.
2) he flies. he doesnt need a vehicle mode.3) needs a mode that allows him to concentrate his firepower. Alt and primary.

So heres what I came up with. He's a Stationary cybertonian turrent gun. Originally the treads on his feet were by his ribs, but I really loved the feet in the new movie so I changed it to reflect that.

*that little image of his turrent mode wont be in the final piece, thats just me working out his transformation

Posted: 07/13/09 03:19 AM

Who knows. Generally when a large multimedia firm buys out one of these smaller companies, it ends with whoring of known franchises and eventually reselling or death of the said company. Maybe it won't go that way, but when you have money hungry people in charge, key role people could eventually be let go. I could see Mr. Carmack packing up his bags in fact. If that happens, ID is dead to me period. Bad enough wtihout Romero.

At 7/13/09 02:50 AM, Sh0ckFyre wrote: The fact that Bethesda and ID Software are collaborating together has nothing to do with how downhill their games will go. I don't have anything against Bethesda at all. I think they did great with Black Isle's Fallout series and with their own Elder Scrolls games. And they have been around a long time. No disrespect to what they have accomplished, but ID is probably my favorite indy gaming developer of all time. Doom/Quake says it all. RESPECT.

So now I see Zenimax has somehow swayed Carm into selling and although he claims it will be "business as usual," I am skeptical. Look at the guy who heads up Zenimax: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_A._A ltman

Ugh. A scumbag lawyer. Just what ID needs to be associated with. I sort of wish ID would die gracefully, rather than being swallowed up by tycoons. But I realize, thats business.

I'd advise hanging onto any and everything related. They ran fairly low numbers of the original runs, so they are becoming kind of scarce now. Yeah, I agree about the design. That is what motivated me originally to get into all of this Flash or nowadays multimedia shit anyway. GameFan fucking ROCKED. And it had the ORIGINAL Street Fighter lovers. :)

At 7/11/09 03:46 AM, yurgenburgen wrote: Wow, I was just thinking about Gamefan the other day. I own one issue from August 1998 which I bought because it had a feature about Abe's Exoddus. I still have the magazine although it's a bit battered.

What I loved best about the magazine was the sheer detail of each page. Every single page was designed with such care and attention, it was like looking through a magazine full of artwork.

Wow, a GameFan thread. Glad I searched for this. It was the only 'zine I bought through the 90s. Game Players was the gayest shit ever, I didn't care for Nintendo Power after the age of 8 and GamePro was WEAK. All 'zines are weak now in fact. Boring, pathetic garbage I wouldn't waste my five bucks on.

I never had a proper subscription, but that is what turned me onto a lot of import games, anime, etc. It remains to this day the only true gaming magazine. EGM and all that stuff will NEVER come close, ever.

Newgrounds has always had the same feel (this new interface they have reminds me of GameFan layouts) as far as the design. Even the mod avatar idea is spookily simila. I am not sure what happened to all of the reviewers. Some of them work on games now and some are MIA. But for anyone who is old enough to remember this shit and actually interested, here are the only remnants left of the mighty Die-Hard GameFan:

Yep. He had Joey on his show quite a few times over the years, along with Marky and occasionally DD or Johnny. I'm pretty sure he'd be best to direct something like that, as he's a genuine long-time Ramones fan and fan of Punk music in general (still remember the days when he wore Misfits and Black Flag shirts). The original flick wasn't terrible, but the sequel with Feldman was. I'm also not a fan of remakes, but if anyone touched that one, it really should be Stern. Private Parts ruled supreme anyway, so I already know he's a good director.

I'd envision it as a free roaming environment while wearing various doodads. That is really what FPS games were supposed to half-ass create, the experience of being IN the game. But as long as virtual reality doesn't end up looking like this, I'll be happy.

That is likely true. I mean, look at how pathetic the MMORPG community is for example. But at least they'd be ATHLETIC if it happened, heh. I remember one concept a few years ago was virtual stores that you could walk in and pick your items from. I personally think that'd be cool.
I always picture virtual reality as such: Person standing on a treadmill, with boots on. Those boots pick up motion. Gloves on that do the same. A headset that provides the image, mainly just a high-definition screen in front of your eyes. So yeah, you would get excersise, walking on the treadmill to do things. And what could be more satisfying than bending down in Half-Life to pick up that crowbar, and swinging your arm forward and smashing the glass?

If virtual reality starts, and it works, eventually it will get so good that people would prefer to be immersed in their virtual worlds all the time, rather than live in reality unless they absolutely needed to. Nothing would get done, and the human race would slowly go away, as things that are necessary for us to survive dwindle and disappear with no one caring for it.

I'd love to play Half-Life in VR.

Another problem is that the gaming industry is back on the idea of "Assemble 1,000 developers and recycle this idea until it is completely exhausted in the consumer market." And the trail-blazing genius dudes like Carmack are too busy with aero-space or some crazy shit. Maybe I should e-mail him and say "Hey, don't you have anything better to do than fly bottle rockets to the moon and make portable Doom? Make virtual reality for me, god damn you."

That has been a term for a very long time, but here we are in the 21st century, still relegated to chipboards surrounded by plastic shells. So what happened to those valiant attempts at actual virtual reality? Okay, so the virtual boy wasn't perfect, but at least it was an attempt to leap into the future. And it hoisted Gumpei Yokoi in my eyes. (RIP!!!)

The thing is, I grew up watching movies like Brainscan and Virtuosity, thinking that one day we'd have more physical interaction with games (especially after the early invent of the crash arcades, rumble packs, vests, etc.) So where the hell is it? Oh, and where are the hoverboards promised by Back to the Future, damnit?

The original is a true classic of the genre, no doubt about it. But I felt like Tobe went onto weaker things later on. Never enjoyed Poltergeist as much for example. My favorite out of all of the Saw films is definitely the original part 2 with Dennis Hopper. It's cheesy in spots, but has an awesome black humor/gorefest feel, similar to that given by Return of the Living Dead and similar flicks.

Who knows. I think Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, more recently in the Metalpocalypse tour) is great since he is self taught, technical, and has always had great endurance and tons of speed.
