It's a good, stable release. I'd still say it's a pretty big memory hog, 500mb RAM used at least without any programs open. I've used it for 11 months now, using various preview builds and have yet to experience any real problems other than the built-in printer driver not working (I just had to download the proper one).

Most internet connections these days use Dynamic IPs, meaning that you can easily swap your IP by turning your router on and off, pretty much making the bans useless. And I think only admins have access to the logs anyway.

True, I guess if you had something like that on a public wave it would be less than 30 seconds before some HILARIOOS GUYY embedded meatspin or something.

Anyway, I'm gonna send out invites to everybody who's asked and not yet received so far (I think I have enough).

Mines is better, yours has annoying autoplaying music and a lack of dancing Flash logos.

Also, I'm gonna invite the next load of people now, I have 7 invites left. Although the last person on the list on our Wave is kjb1124, but I should be able to invite everybody else.

Just so you guys know, it can take weeks for an invite to arrive. Once you get invited, your email address is added to a list, and you don't get the email until Google are ready for the next batch of testers. Mine took something like 2 weeks to arrive.

I just got my Wave account a few days ago, and it's awesome. However I didn't get the Invitation wave, so I can't invite any of my friends, so it's kinda boring just now. I actually don't have the Settings either, or the welcome message, so I think my account fucked up a little bit.

Still, I can see it being an excellent tool for collaborative programming. There's an awesome little app for syntax highlighting, add kasyntaxy@appspot.com to your wave, and post a new blip with #!python at the top (replace Python with any other language - most work), and type your code. There's a lot of other cool apps in development too, I think Wave is gonna be awesome when it's released publicly.

It's generally true, both the reasonably small number of desktop users and security/permission structure means that there are pretty much no viruses in circulation. It would still be possible to do some damage to a Linux/Unix system, but only by tricking the user into running a program as the superuser (a problem which will exist on any OS, no matter what the security really), but the chances of remote attacks are less than on Windows.

I have it, and it's awesome, although it's still buggy. Sometimes my Waves don't save. I also don't have a settings menu (clicking it does nothing) and I didn't get the welcome message or the Wave that allows you to invite other people.

From what I've used that works though, it's extremely helpful, especially as a collaborative programming tool, and just about anything I can think of.

It's gonna be a while until it's ready for even closed beta-testing. Just to confirm, Windows 8 is a codename, it most likely will be called something a bit more original when launched. They aren't really focusing on the new features yet, but maybe next year we'll hear what changes there'll be.

Topic: Why does everybody hate macs?

Posted: 10/25/09 08:20 AM

Forum: General

Bah, I'm still in an arguable mood this morning, so lent me rant a bit more about the OS.

Some of my family members have Macs, and since I'm the guy that 'knows how to computer' then I often find myself fixing them a lot more than computers running Vista (which I also hate).
OSX ruins the point of having a UNIX-like OS by locking stuff in and using some weird 'framework' system of implementing libraries and such. This would be OK if I didn't find myself constantly in the position where I have to fix something which is preventing an application from working. At this point you open up a terminal, which is pretty useless at this point since if you want to reinstall something you'll have to download it manually. Long story short I end up reinstalling various programs hundreds of times until they work again, because that's about the only thing OSX will let you do.

The truth is that the only thing holding the brand together is Adobe, since they publish their programs for OSX. This means that if Adobe suddenly pulled their products from OSX then suddenly Macs would lose around half their userbase from art college students being forced away.
Having an entire OS being kept alive by a single third-party company just isn't a great idea at all.

Also I still have to laugh uncontrollably at every person who actually bought a Mac, seeing as they are paying up to 3x as much for a product that has been pretty much tampered with so you can't upgrade the hardware at all without using some hideously overpriced Apple upgrade. The hardware itself supports it but Apple pretty much wrote the BIOS to refuse 3rd party hardware so they could make a profit from it.

part 2 of my rant over, grgrgrgghrghhg

Ugh, Macs. There a lot of reasons I don't like them. First of all is the people associated with them. Every single Mac user I know takes every single opportunity possible to declare why you should be in fact using a Mac. Nearly every one seems to be extremely influential too, and has a Mac to be 'creative and unique'. Yet at least 75% of Mac desktops looks exactly the fucking same. On that note, so does every Apple product, it's the same unoriginality on various sizes of device.

The OS itself is pretty terrible once you get over the aesthetics of it, it's extremely impractical. All the glossy effects have gotten in the way of practicality, and pretty much shut off any sense of being in control of what goes on. The amount of 3rd party software available is pretty limited, which isn't really encouraging when you're trying to find a solution to a problem. The look and feel can't be changed beyond changing the wallpaper and moving the dock about. The only proper theme I've ever come across was some hideous looking green-beige thing which reminds me of John McCririck for some reason.

The major reason Macs are popular with some people is that Adobe release most of their programs for OSX, which appeals to the art college students, who seem to make up a large chunk of the userbase (probably linked to what I said about being influential).

The hardware is pretty awful once you get over the looks, it's very hard to upgrade components due to a few modifications to the hardware that seem to specifically prevent the user installing new hardware without paying Apple some horrendous price. And Apple's mouse design must be one of the worse I've ever seen. After the initial problems caused by only having one button, they now seem to be designed for people with no fingers at all.

And don't get me started on the pricing...

graarghghrhg I needed a good rant
