And now for today's entertainment.

(Can't be arsed to make screencaps, so I'll just give a summary)

Short sci-fi film from Uruguay showing an invasion of giant alien robots and flying... things.
For an independent production it has awesome special effects (vaguely art related!), similar to Independence Day and District 9.

where the hell do I get this stuff from o.0!
I could use a bump map and give some depth that way and try and rough the model, but I don't think it would go far enough for what I want.
I guess I could just sacrifice a ton of polys and render time and just do some work in Zbrush.
I'll try it today and see hot it goes, (something tells me to expect a computer crash by the end of the day)

Textures for games are usually made at double the resolution before they are exported to TGA, usually going from 2048 to 1024 or for more detailed models, such as characters, from 4096 to 2048.

One way to get grunge and dirt going which I really like is to create a new layer, hit F5, pick a chalk/grungy brush, play with the Shape Dynamics, Scattering, Texture, Wet Edges and 'build' the dirt up in places where you'll most likely find it with opacity set to <50%.
Depending on the environment you switch up colours; dark brown, gray, yellow, green, orange, red and just ctrl+s until you're satisfied with the result.

Consider upgrading your PC btw, a good multicore processor and a few gigs of RAM will allow you to switch between your 3D suite and Photoshop smoothly.

I did try and rough up the Mech that is being repaired, but it only worked so well. If I loaded the model in zbrush and worked on it there I could do a hell of a lot more, but I'm having troubles with normal maps in zbrush and putting out the model from zbrush would result in a ton of polys (seriously were talking in the hundreds of thousands.)
I alwats have troubles with making scenes look "used" I try and rough them up as much as possible but they do tend to always come out so clean. I'll get to work on aging the place right away.
The lighting could use some more work to bring out those darkened places, I admit.
And on a last note for this one, it really isn't meant for a still. This is actually for a camera pan. when I came up with this project 5 weeks ago I didn't really have any environments. so I took the time to do one.And since I was already working on the Mech I decided this could go along with it, add some animation to the welding sparks and a cam pan then I had another short piece fir my demo reel.
\The cam pans to the upper right so you can see more of the "fixed" mech.

So you're going to render it, that explains a few things.

When you unwrap, what resolution do you unwrap in? Also, as long as you don't really focus on the model with the camera, you can fake depth fairly easily with no complex geometry or even normal maps with a detailed texture.

The frontdoor for instance of O'Brien's (in my thread), has no normal map but does appear to have depth.
I'll admit being a texture artist is a job in itself though, hehe.

It's odd that suddenly people take intrest in my thread, I'm so used to being one of the unknown regulars around here. It's just odd.
Well on this one the Radial and Ulna tend to bend a little when there not suppose to. it does give the forearm a warped look, doesn't it. I guess if I had rotated the hand and wrist a little it wouldn't have that deformed look.

The link in your sig was irresistible ;)

On your Mech Repair Bay: what is the focus of the piece? There's a lot going on on the right, with one mech being repaired... aaannd, there's a door on the left.
The mechs are only half in the picture and the door is in all its glory...

I notice there are two lights, but the light itself seems to be coming from a few meters down from the source. They also drown out the texture on the floor.

I'm missing detail in the modesl. Things like scratches, dents, decals. I imagine a repair bay being a busy place which is used a lot, so make it a bit worn out. The red/blue warning lights(?) near the door also seem a bit tacked on, so something to 'transfer' them to the wall would make it look much better, again probably scratches or dirt or whatever.

How do you texture btw, do you unwrap your models and texture them in Photoshop?

Make that texture artist ;), these aren't my models. I do know 3DsMax, but only the basics.
You could argue most of the look is defined by the texture, though.

That's what I like to do anyway...

How do you do that fancy quote thingy? I want to be cool too :O

Whose leg do you have to hump to get a pint of Guiness around here?

Basic colour selection finished, already filling in details here and there.
Only the 2048x2048 diffuse, specular is going to add that much since the red wood will have a shiny, laquer finish.

That theater I posted earlier is now placed in-game. Tasty, high-res pics arriving soon.

It looks swampy, so some dirty swampiness on the glass would look good as well.
Depending on the speed it had when breaking through the atmosphere, perhaps even scorch marks, or small fractures in the glass?

Is it an escape pod, btw? Maybe you could sprinkle some hints here and there on what it is. A big red cross for a first-aid kit or something.

Just throwing ideas around in an effort to add that bit more drama. Mood is great, but try to 'place' it more into the scene.

My life revolves around game development, primarily gamedesign which I do outside school this semester. Though we did have to design the level we're building. Currently I'm the texture artist on the team along with some other stuff.

Next semester I'll be designing an artgame and implementing it in the Unreal Development Kit.

Outside school I'm part of a game development team who are setting up a community site for people looking to break into the industry: a cross between Newgrounds, Deviantart, Sourceforge and ModDB.
Oh, and we're currently building our first playable which should be ready this christmas, completely custom engine and assets.

So I'm kind of living it already, but not 'officially'. I'd like to land a job in a big studio like Ubisoft Montreal or Criterion Games or... something, but I'm still a few years away from that.

I haven't tried animation yet, then again 3D isn't really my forte or what I'm really pursuing.
If you can, get your hands on an awesome program called UVlayout, which will smoothen your workflow substantially.

I have someone in the team who has been doing it for 6+ years. He's a god compared to me.

Also, the latest few aren't my models, they are however my textures, though. I'm primarily the texture artist on the team.

Wait until you get to unwrap your models, now THAT'S FUN!!!

Wrapping up the theater, tweaking/adding details like dirt. Need to make a mask for the entrance segment so that the glass doors can be translucent when implemented in the map.

Not sure just how much of the detail you'll be getting after the downsize.
Imagehost I use is currently offline D:

So yeah, added some waterstains, some wear and tear to the floor, gave the dark gray, horizontal beam a brushed metal look and some fine detailing here and there.

Working on a 2048x2048 canvas is so much fun :D

I'll probably finish this segment tonight, after that's it's copy-pasting it over to the other two and some adjustments.
I'll probably finish the entire thing... tomorrow.
