For once, it paid off to read a text wall.
You were brutally honest, a virtue which very few people appreciate today.
Today, people who voice unpopular truths are referred to as defeatists, do-nothings, foloish optimists, foolish cynics, and/or "politically incorrect", among other such terms, depending on who's been offended by plain truth.

Posted: 09/14/08 11:29 PM

Forum: Politics

Every news station has a slant. Some are subtle, others are only one step removed from being propaganda.
I avoid bias about American politics by reading British news, although it's a sad day when a citizen of a democratic nation has to read foreign media in order to get accurate, relevant news.

Topic: Not a true American?

Posted: 09/14/08 11:19 PM

Forum: Politics

Logical fallacies annoy me, especially when combined with nationalism.
Perfect example: Bill O'Reilly's "Why do you hate America?" line.
That line is a Straw Man fallacy as it implies that disagreeing with the speaker is anti-American, thereby giving the speaker the illusion of speaking for America. It also allows the speaker to attack rather than defend, which is useful for demagogues who can't defend their views in a logical debate.
I will now stop talking about the poor excuse for an Irishman known as Bill O'Reilly.

I also wish to point out the the difference between patriotism and nationalism.
Patriotism is a fundamental devotion to a country's founding ideals.
Nationalism is a fundamental devotion to the government of a nation regardless of the morality of its leaders, people or actions.

Oh, boy. Once the media gets hold of these facts, they're going to go into a frenzy. McCain will probably lose a few points in the polls, not to mention one of his favorite lines of attack. He'll actually need to talk about issues (oh, no!) and engage in debate (the horror!)

Posted: 09/14/08 11:05 PM

Forum: Politics

I'm not too worried about North Korea nuking us.
What I am worried about is North Korea selling shit to other people so that they can nuke us.
Unfortunately, we can't launch a preemptive nuke.
We do that, we become international pariahs for about 150 years.
With our military tied down in the Middle East, we can only wait and see what happens.

Topic: McCain selects female woman as VP

Posted: 09/14/08 10:55 PM

Forum: Politics

I am annoyed by McCain picking Palin for VP for 5 reasons:

1. It's obviously a ploy to recruit disgrultled Clinton supporters who want to put any woman in the White House, regardless of the political implications.
2. It plays on the confusion regarding the responsibilities of the vice president created by the Bush administration. Cheney had much more influence than VPs usually do. This also ties into point number 1.
3. This move shows that McCain thinks we're all stupid enough not to smell the bullshit. I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of a leader who thinks we're all retards.
4. Palin has a reputation for supporting pork-barrel projects. That claim about killing the "Bridge to Nowhere"? She only killed it when it got national media attention.
5. Palin has no experience at the national level whatsoever, and if McCain wins, she will be likely to become President due to McCain dying of stress or age-related illness. Considering what our foreign relations are like right now, that prospect should scare most of America.

I looked at the Bill of Rights, and guess what I found?

First Amendment - We all know about this one, right?
Violations:
- Mass suspensions of peaceful dissidents
- Preventing peaceful protest
- Forcing a religious view down the throats of others

Eighth Amendment - Prohibition of excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment
Violated by the unjustified "stay away from children order" which had no relation to the original unjustified charges.

Fourth Amendment - Protection from unreasonable search and seizure
Violated by the shirt-lifting to find the letters "GP" on students. Pulling up a young woman's shirt to see if she has a phrase or insignia under it seems to qualify as unreasonable search to me, and also probably qualifies as sexual assault.

the deliberate violation of three separate constitutional amendments in the Bill of Rights warrants jail time.

I'm not worried about Russia's threat to launch nukes. They are completely aware of what the backlash would be like. They would probably be expelled from the G8, and could possibly lose their UN seat, although that's very unlikely.
An extremist fundamentalist country making these threats would begin to concern me, because they would be crazy enough to do it. Russia, however, is probably bluffing.
