The law is for late-term abortions. I don't think you could "find out" about your pregnancy that late.

on the other hand, it's setting a dangerous precedent, banning any type of recognized abortion method. Also it's open to interpretation how late term, etc. etc. Seems to be a dangerous characteristic of Bush-y policies. See patriotic act. What is a "terrorist"? a Greenpeace protestor?

Response to: Obesity Posted November 5th, 2003 in General

And about genetics playing a role, it can. We learned about it in Biology class last year. Something about a chemical that tells you when you are hungry and not hungry is overactive and causes the person to feel hungry all the time even when they have eaten a lot already. So they continue to eat and therefore gain lots of wait from the extra uneeded calories.

of course it can play a role, but when some OUTRAGEOUS number like half of america is overweight, and like a third or a quarter are obese, genetics is not playing that big of a role.

At 11/5/03 04:14 PM, bumcheekcity wrote: What IS the School of Americas?

quick blurb from www.soaw.org :

The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,” is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the “biggest base for destabilization in Latin America.” The SOA, frequently dubbed the “School of Assassins,” has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned.

Over its 56 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

not so quick..

I wish I could say that gay men didn't watch all of these gay shows (Queer Eye..., That one Bachelor like show with all gay guys, etc.). They only give people more fuel for bashing and hurt the gay guys who are trying to get away from the stereotypes.

i know, i know. My - homosexual - roommate had to watch the last few episodes of that gay-bachelor show.

But then on the other side I read a great article by this one really cool student here blasting queer eye..

I think a lot of the viewership of queer eye is probably those people who think gay people are quaint, believe all the stereotypes, but then really weirded out in the presence of one. Just my theory tho, I have no idea.

Response to: F*cking SICK of Feminism already! Posted November 5th, 2003 in Politics

Actually this post was more level-headed than I expected.

you notice with most sitcoms...

Men are either:

Lazy
Fat
Drunk
Befuddled
Breast-Ogling Pigs
All-of-the-Above.

quite true!

While women in sitcoms ... are portrayed as absolute, flawless Goddesses.

Yes, they are all very sexy and beautiful, but in most of these shows they are also very stupid, another stereotype that is just as prevalent.. in the shows you mentioned they're all stupid, focused on material goods, etc.

What if the show were on the OTHER foot? Suppose a guy gets to choose between ugly women? I betcha there would be a political backlash so stringent against men!

definitely

we have a bunch of gays walking around and turning guys into "metrosexuals."

I have no idea what to think of all this inflammatory gay shows today. Many people are really offended. More homo stereotypes. it's pathetic.

Perhaps a new awareness of masculinity is needed. I mean we need a new masculine mystique, as it were.

There are a bunch of shitty channels for men, ie. 'spike'... ?

they should also curb feminism. I mean what real point does it have now?

there still is unequality in the workplace, inequality of wages, etc. Interesting thing is more women than men are going on to attend college now, so.. wonder what'll happen 10-15 years down the line?

Here's an idea, why don't you femi-nazis complain about something that actually IS a problm in this country, such as the use of "sex" to sell to the male sex and the abscene of fat, tubby women in the process?

Sure, they should be. I'm sure a lot are.

I don't know if any real, true feminists watch shows like Dharma and Greg and Will & Grace. At least I hope not.

Response to: Gender Views Posted November 5th, 2003 in Politics

This is why males are much better suited for leadership roles than women. Women spend too much time compromising and trying to reach a "perfect" decision. Men, on the other hand, take action before a situation becomes uncontrollable.

so an abrupt half-ass decision is better than a more rationalized decision that perhaps took alittle longer to arrive at?

I'm not neccesserily contradicting you, just.. I find that statement alittle silly.

Response to: Communist FAQ´s Posted November 5th, 2003 in Politics

well, how well do you think Cuba is going? I know I know, not communist. A communist system would have to be enacted worldwide to work properly. So I suppose we call Cuba a 'socialized' state? It does have it's human rights abuses, and the people are piss-poor for the most part, but how much of that was caused by sanctions?
Don't you like how Bush 'cracking down' on Cuba? My school's visas (whatever they called, can't visit anymore) to cuba were revoked. Sucks, I'd really like to visit.

Personally, on paper, the social democracies of Europe -- welfare states -- seem much better than the pro-business gov't here in the states

Response to: Was Iraq "Successful"? Posted November 5th, 2003 in Politics

At 11/5/03 12:58 AM, TheTio wrote: and 900million is such a large percentage of 87billion

hmm, not especially. but then you have to take into account that less than half of that $87b is actually going directly towards Iraq. There is still a lot of money going to Afghanistan, and probably half of the $87b (I don't have exact #'s in front of me, going by memory) is just going into the general pentagon budget, for any number of projects.

So out of the $20-25b that is going directly to the rebuilding of Iraq, $900m is almost 5 percent, give or take.

Not the point though. The oil is suppose to be privatized and sold. They should be exporting oil. In the bush wet-dream, at least. But of course this isn't going to happen overnight.
I just think it's a little interesting that we're importing petroleum when a lot of people -- falsely or not -- think we went in to get oil.

harmless training ground for Latin American troops, or school of choice for South American death squads?

How much do you know about it? Offer any insights?

Anyone planning on going to the protest Nov. 21-23?

I'll provide some input later, I do have some work I need to do.

Then I switched over to comp games. Although haven't been playing anything lately. Too busy..
