You guys are arguing over moral systems. Neither person is right, and you can't get the other person to agree with you by slamming their head into a wall.

Personally I think the value of a human life is intrinsic, that there is no difference between a white American and a brown Iraqi. But others disagree. *shrug*

And who told you that?

I determined it myself from looking at why I and the majority of other students I encounter have entered college. Who told you that it's where people ask you what you want?

I wrote about the class, compared it to a previous one in a similar pedagogical vein. I think it deserved a grade at least.

Probably. But I fail to see what that matters. If I fail to get anything out of that assignment, who's fault is it? I wonder how many people did. It sounds as if he didn't give grades to the majority of the class. Being intentionally obtuse doesn't make learning any easier. The flipside of this is that I enjoyed today's discussion. I don't know. Confusing college students seems like shooting fish in a barrel.

A study like this looks at the deaths caused by the invasion of Iraq. That is how such a large disparity exists between it's findings and things like Iraq Body Count, which only tracks violent deaths. Sorry for the confusion.

Attack the methodology all you want. I'm not interested in such arguments.

"Zeke – Unless you have a reason to take the class and a reason to write this paper, then if I were you I'd drop the course.

Asking you to write a paper without giving you a topic forces you to confront a screen or blank paper and ask: why should I write? What should I write about?

In this confrontation it is my professional opinion that, so far, you've failed the challenge.

More than the absence of substance I am impressed by the absence of effort and intensity.

But perhaps, as you hinted, this is merely a case of writer's block.

Do let me know."

Well what do you know.. The fucker called me on it. Christ am I sick of college.

Is that fair then? Their social structure was already gone from a decade of sanctions and those deaths were already happenong. And the Iraqis looted damn near everything at the onset of the war, not helping anything either. And the insurgents continue to make hell of civil society, destroying two of everything created. Would it be fair to place those deaths on the USA?

Wait, you're trying to change the meaning of my words, create an issue where there is none. This study takes into account the effects of the invasion. These deaths are in addition to the normal death rate pre-invasion. The deaths that resulted from further degradation of Iraq were not "already happening."

Beyond the fact that Iraqi's are killing each other.

That the death count of the war is beyond all previous estimates? That the people against the war before we invaded are proven right once again? That it's not a cakewalk? That it's a civil war, a quagmire?

Take your pick dude. Really, do you rely on people to think for you outside of NG?

And again, I broke the rule of thirds vertically.. And I don't think it'd work as well if I didn't.

Nevermind.

Well, like a lot of people say, we ought to follow such rules and understand them, so that we can then know when to break them. They aren't set in stone, just really good guidelines to follow.

At 10/6/06 06:43 PM, Dark6 wrote: So I just got a camera, this is where I live.

Like this one. It's very nice.. And I'd say he followed rule o' thirds, maybe by accident. The horizon is actually smack dab in the middle of the photo, but the thing that draws your eye is the diagonal sidewalk. It's in the lower 1/3 of the pic, the sky takes up the upper 1/3, the buildings blend with the ground moving the perceived horizon upwards a bit.

Only thing I would have maybe tried is leveling out the buildings, and seen how that affects the sidewalk.

At 10/7/06 01:13 PM, Dark6 wrote: Damn, this one turned out to be quite blurry.
I need to work on holding the camera perfectly still.

Play with your manual options. If you're using the camera on full auto, then in low-light situations like that it's going to use a very slow shutter setting, making it difficult to get a crisp hand-held photo no matter how steady you are.

General rule of thumb is to use a tripod or something else steady when you're going under, say, 1/60th of a second.

With digital, if you underexpose the photo by a few steps (pic darker than you'd want because of not enough light), you can always play around with it in photoshop..
