America's bio-engineered virus Posted November 9th, 2003 in Politics

MSNBC

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 31 — A research team backed by a federal grant has created a genetically engineered mousepox virus designed to evade vaccines, underscoring biotechnology’s deadly potential and stirring debate over whether such research plays into the hands of terrorists.

THE TEAM at the University of St. Louis, led by Mark Buller, created the superbug to figure out how to defeat it, a key goal of the government’s anti-terrorism plan.
The researchers designed a two-drug cocktail that promises to defeat their exceptionally deadly virus. They hope to publish their work soon in a peer review journal.
“The whole focus was to contribute to the biodefense agenda of the country,” Buller said.
Mousepox can’t be passed to humans, but it’s a close relative to smallpox, making it an ideal virus to study in animals.

Any thoughts?

Dagodevas, I'll disagree with you here. There are other manners to get rid of drugs in school then to occur what happened there. One would be to bring a dog to sniff for drugs in the school during class. Also while doing this, have a cop on every exit to make sure the drug dealers don't get tipped off and leave. Don't tell me that having guns pulled out on a bunch of students is a good thing? Remember China a couple years ago with the students and the tanks?

To prevent further confusion, let me put down the definition of terrorism from dictionary.com

"The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."

Myself being an atheists, I feel sorry that I must quote your holy book to you, 70TA.

Exodus 33:7-33:11

"The tent, which was called the meeting tent, Moses used to pitch at some distance away, outside the camp. Anyone who wished to consult the Lord would go to this meeting tent outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, the people would all rise and stand at the entrance of their own tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. As Moses entered the tent, the column of cloud would come down and stand at its entrance while the Lord spoke with Moses. On seeing the cloud stand at the entrance, all the people would rise and worship at the entrance of their own tents. The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another. Moses would then return to the camp, but his young assistant, Joshua, son of Nun, would not move out of the tent."

Cloud of smoke rising out of the entrance :) ......

more to come

Why is there a controversy over it? Why is it still legal? Remember morphine? Why is it controlled by the government? Why is it still legal even though of its addictive properties? Remember soma? Why is legal even though it accounts for many deaths and addictions? Remember codeine(DXM)? Why is it still legal to be used in cough syrups even though it is highly addictive, occasionally causing psychotic episodes, memory disturbances, and hallucinations?

Please, get your head out of your ass and look at what you are saying.

I don't have to justify myself to you to tickle your fancy, you know and I know why they're bad. You're starting a problem because you don't want to face reality.

Actually I don't know why marijuana is bad for you. It decreases the pressure in your eye by 45%, which is very helpful for glaucoma patients. It also does not create a physical addiction, which is the hardest to get over since you go through spasms and for alcohol, delirium tremens. Also, marijuana can help AID's patients by helping them keep down their medication. As well as that, it can help chemo patients keep their appetite up so that they can have a constant amount of energy. As well as all of this, there have been no studies showing a coorelation between marijuana and lung cancer. Trust me, organizations have tried to see if this is true, but none have come up with this coorelation. None.

Pot is only mentall addictive, not physically addictive like alcohol or tobacco. The people that are addicted to pot would've become addicted to anything else like porno, pediophiles, and many other things.

There has also been research and there was no coorelation between pot smoking and lung cancer. Not that it doesn't happen, its just there is no coorelation like tobacco's.

I hate the slippery slope excuse.

Anyways, pot has roots into our constitution. Even the constitution is written on hemp. I just read that today in a medical book. I also read that Elizabeth I required landholders of 60 or more acres to grow pot or face a fine. Even Jefferson favored pot rather than tobacco. The main crop for Virginia in the 1700's was tobacco? I don't think so, it was actually pot. The difference between then and now? Hemp is made from pot, in which many clothing and papers were made out of it around this time since it was durable. Soon after the cotton gin was invented, the rise of anti-marijuana came around just because pot was being used to smoke with rather than to make stuff with. You can thank Eli Whitney for that invention.

Also, marijuana relieves the pressure in the eye(they had a name in the medical book, forgot what it was called) by at most 45%, helping glaucoma patients. It also is good after chemo to get the patients appetite up. As well as chemo and glaucoma, it can help AID's patients with their symptoms of uneasiness and etc...

The thing is, an hour after you do smoke pot, you have 4 1/2 times more likely to get a heart attack. This is due to the fact it raises your pulse by at most 40 bpm.

My vote has actually been changed to Kucinich.

The reasons in the following paragraphs from his site: www.kucinich.net

Most Americans believe that medical marijuana should be available to help relieve the suffering of seriously ill patients, and eight states have passed laws to allow it. But the Bush administration has harassed medical marijuana patients in an effort to assert federal authority. This is another aspect of the drug war that should be ended.

This to me seems that he knows the constitution and that the Federal Government should have no say on medicinal marijuana.

A safe, free and just America is undermined, not bolstered, by the costly and ineffective War on Drugs. While well-intentioned, this misguided policy -- which emphasizes criminalization over treatment -- has led to increased violent crime, misdirected resources of law enforcement and restricted Constitutional liberties.

Need I explain?

Over time, the Kucinich plan will remove private insurance companies from the system -- along with their waste, paperwork, profits, excessive executive salaries, advertising, sales commissions, etc -- and redirect resources to actual treatment. Insurance companies do not heal or treat anyone, physicians and health practitioners do.
Thanks to advances in renewables, there are fewer technical obstacles to energy independence for our country. There are many political obstacles -- but the oil, auto and electric utility corporations won't be directing energy policy in a Kucinich White House. I will spur research and investment in "alternative" energy sources -- hydrogen, solar, wind and ocean -- and make them mainstream. Clean energy technologies will produce new jobs. We can easily double our energy from renewable sources by 2010. And we can soon have hybrid and fuel cell cars dominating the market. When I was Mayor of Cleveland, I defended public ownership of utilities; when I'm President, I will expand it.

He also will demand to get all nuclear weapons off alert, stop development of new nuclear weapons, and movement towards no WMD's.

In this campaign, I plan to make a major issue of hometown security -- healthcare, jobs and education for all -- and misspent Pentagon dollars, even as other Democratic candidates join President Bush in pressing for still more exorbitant military budgets.

I really don't want an army general, and I don't know who Orpha is. The person that I actually want is Al Sharpton. I don't like his views, but the thing that makes me want him is the fact he doesn't suck up. He says what is on his mind, whether something is right or not depending on his own opinions, not others.

True believers don't go to church in my head, or at least shouldn't. No where in the Bible does it say you must go to church to be a follower of Christianity. It says keep the "sabbath day holy." I'm paraphrasing on the next one but it goes like this "God created the universe in 6 days, and on the seventh day he rested." I believe it is in Leviticus.

This is where the Muslims have Christians. I'd be damned if every single Christian as read the Bible. With Islam, you must read the Koran because there are no preachers. This leads to you having your own views on what the message of Muhammad was. This is not true with Christians and Jesus of Nazareth.

Response to: Freedom Posted October 17th, 2003 in Politics

Freedom seems to be an illusion by the ones in power to eliminate uprisals and overthrows. Without a sense of freedom, the people have a greater chance that they will create havoc because they do not believe they have control of the government. With freedom on the otherhand, people seem to feel that taxes are Ok because they are allowed to live out their lives.

Freedom in its pure sense to myself is restraints from all rules of a pre-established organization. The rules that you follow with freedom are established by the currently living people, the society itself.

Yes, well tough, even if the reverend is a malicious, evil old coot with a heart black as coal, if he were to erect a statue like that and put it on church grounds, there would be little anyone could do to stop him, anything legal that is.

Hopefully the papacy will realise that hatred is never the way to go and that they will lose members of the church if they do allow this to occur.

Then do something about it and stop whining.

That's just like a promise, it's made to be broken.

I don't know where you live, but if your promise something you must follow through. You cannot drink when you promised you would be the designated driver. What would happen if you did have a couple shots near the end of the party?

Ok, ok, I know I'm coming off sounding like a disgusting bigot, but really, why "must" we do all of these things you proclaim? Although I think that this statue is completely outrageous, wake up and smell the atomic bombs, the world is a bad place. There dosent seem to be an innate goodness inside each and every person, and it looks as though there never was.

Ahh, the natural western look out on the entire world. I like most chinese philosophies because that it believes in people. It acknoledges that people are born good, and that society corrupts them. It also acknoledges that there is evil. That evil and good live in harmony. This is where the ying-yang comes from.

But I like your latter part of the paragraph.
