I use public transportation a lot as well in NY and I have never seen anything like that as you have said. I do sometimes see people shave their facial hair in public bathrooms but that's about it.

Its obvious. A and B are the first two letter of the alphabet while X and Y are the third and second too last letters of the alphabet. Another reason could be the four letters are the most commonly used variables in algerbra. Possibly (besides I) the most common stand alone letters. And its catchy!

I would suggest looking up on eBay so see how much people are selling their Pokémon cards and start from there.

I have a bookfull of the original Pokémon cards that first came(like a 1st edition Zapdos, holographic and a Charizard) out and I don't think they would be worth much since they don't live up to the new rules of the tournaments that the cards don't have themsevles but the new cards do. I read that off of a respone on Yahoo Answers.
