I did read a study about different places where they HAD legalized prostitution, and rape, drug addiction, and assaults had increased greatly. I'll see if I can find it, it was kind of a shock for me to read since I've been on the "legalize it" side for quite some time now.
Quick statistical note (often ignored by the dumber bits of the media): correlation is not causation. Obviously I haven't read these studies but that sounds awfully shallow, do they offer any explanation as to how legalized sex work caused it or just go "Look at how things got worse?" Because if it's the latter that's statistical sleight of hand.
As for the issue I've thought that prositution should be legal for quite a while. If you actually look at the things that are bad about it beyond some biblical moral code (i.e. drugs, pimps, rape, disease, etc) all of those things are either caused by or made worse by the fact that it's illegal. Prostitutes get raped because they can't go to the police because what they do is illegal. They instead have to go to pimps for "protection" and the pimps abuse them, and hook them on drugs. If it was legal and regulated (this second part is kind of important too) with regular STD screenings and the workers able to go to the police for help pretty much all the things bad about the practice would be gone.
