I am reading The Road right now, pretty grim but I am enjoying it.

I have a few books that I love including Pillars of the Earth, Enders Game, Donald Burgett's memoirs, and Shantaram.

He probably smelled like most other people that existed during that time, and it was probably a pretty nasty smell.

You should have mentioned that Watson later retracted that statement because there are a lot more factors that play into development than what he had imagined at the time.

Response to: Teenage smoking... Posted December 15th, 2009 in General

It is also worth mentioning that the only reason the Gov't doesn't want you to smoke is because it costs a lot to take care of cancer patients. And to the person that said they don't care if they die of cancer, seriously? Do you have any idea how horrible and painful it is to die from lung cancer? I can guarantee if you ever do get lung cancer you will completely regret saying that.

Response to: Teenage smoking... Posted December 15th, 2009 in General

Smoking at any age is fairly stupid. I find it hard to respect people who choose to smoke. It really doesn't achieve anything, people may say "oh it helps me relax." But really you only feel relaxed because you have fed your nicotine habit, which you wouldn't have if you didn't decide to start smoking!

Response to: Smoking Smarties!? Posted December 15th, 2009 in General

How retarded. Smoking raisins is where it's at.

Nope, we've pretty much been this stupid all along.

Response to: H1N1 is exaggerrated Posted December 11th, 2009 in General

Actually you're wrong. The regular flu and H1N1 are not the same because more people die from the regular flu!

Although I think what makes H1N1 scary is that it evolves. When you get chicken pox, that's it, you will never get it again. You can get H1N1 more than once as it evolves and because slightly different, and that is what makes it different. Swine flu is definitely not worrisome, but it is worth keeping an eye on as it develops.

Response to: 420, Tokein' it, Weed, Joints... Posted December 11th, 2009 in General

I think it is a misconception that Marijuana makes you stupid, according to a Time magazine article, studies have shown that lifetime users of weed experience an IQ drop of about 1. The average IQ is 100, and if getting high for the rest of my life causes my IQ to be 99, I think I am okay with that.

As far as losing friends, I disagree. I am a habitual user of Marijuana, I smoke weed on average once a day. I have many friends who do not smoke weed, and they accept who I am. If you lose friends because you smoke weed then I don't think they are very good friends to have. I guess it is worth while mentioning that I don't get high when I am with my non-stoner friends, but people who HAVE to get high everyday definitely have a problem.

I suppose you could say that you believe in Determinism: The philosophical doctrine that every state of affairs, including every human event, act, and decision is the inevitable consequence of antecedent states of affairs.

You know what? I completely agree with you... And I'm glad you didn't call it chance - it's unpredictability as you stated.

chance -noun 1. the absence of any cause of events that can be predicted

I believe that it is saying chance is something that can not be predicted, it is something that is unpredictable. Unpredictability and chance are, in a sense, interchangeable. How do you like 'dem facts, munky!?

I believe chance is something that happens that is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY RANDOM and could never, ever, ever be predicted by anyone... EVER. And that there are absolutely no factors that contribute to it's outcome.

That's why I don't believe in chance... Because there are always factors that contribute to the outcome.

Yes of course there are factors that contribute to the outcome, but without previous knowledge of those factors the outcome is left unpredictable. You may look at the outcome after the fact and easily pick out the factors and say "Well of course that was what was going to happen, look at all the signs!" But before it actually happens, we are essentially left in the dark. You are right in the sense that if we know all the factors then it is not chance, but most factors can't be taken into account until after the fact.

ps: this is fun, I'm glad I gave this thread a chance :P

No, when I go to a Casino, I take a guess when rolling the die because I am not smart enough to work it out. I just hope my guess lands on the right number.

That is what chance is. Chance is when you have no control over the outcome. You use the words guess and hope, but in the end it is still left to chance.

Think about another scenario, you are passing a car while going around a blind corner. (just like gambling, something I don't do) Lets say it's during the day so you can't use headlights as an indicator. It is completely up to chance whether or not there is a car coming in the other direction. You may live or die, and in that second you have no idea what the outcome will be, you have left it completely up to chance. You may guess there are no cars coming, and hope you are right, but it is still chance.

Response to: Human's vs Animals Tounament Posted December 11th, 2009 in General

I would say we have the best chance against the dog. Dogs are relatively easy because all you have to do is grab their two front legs and pull them to the side as hard as possible, this causes their ribcage to collapse and essentially obliterates their internal organs. Of course this is a lot easier said than done, but it is still possible.

A horse may be easy if it doesn't realize this is a fight to the death.

Apes are smart and strong, bears are instinctively defensive and would fuck your shit pretty quickly.

However, ramifications of the past are existent in the present. Furthermore products of the past still exist in the present; if the holocaust never happened, then how come we can still visit Aushwitz and see the gas chambers and crematoriums?
