Aaaand level 60. Huh.

Those last few years flew by. It's a little crazy to think how much my life has changed over this level grind, heh.

Level 59!

Wow, only one more to go? Time's a bitch.

Response to: Wi/Ht? level up! Lounge Posted September 16th, 2012 in Where is / How to?

Level 57!

Moved from #43 to #45 since gaining level 56 (Which is also the last post I made on the forums).

Life too stronk.

Response to: Wi/Ht? level up! Lounge Posted April 29th, 2012 in Where is / How to?

Level 56! Too bad I fell short of the pre-re-redesign version though. That one was great.

In other news, dropped an experience rank down to #43. I guess life hit me like a freight train when I started my game development career. I don't even remember missing any days :(

I'm a software engineer for League of Legends, and luckily enough it's what I want to be doing!

Response to: still no edit button Posted February 12th, 2012 in General

Even if it was determined that adding an edit button would bring all sorts of great value to the forums (I personally don't think it ever has to any forum, but that's a different discussion), then it would still have to be weighed against other features that developers could be working on instead. There's a lot to be said in that point, given the current redesign and its incremental release plan. Good on NG for shelving, nay, trashing such a silly request in favor of things that are much more widely user-facing and valuable (e.g. the redesign). Apparently, the forums itself, being the tiny slice of the NG userbase it is, can't even definitively say whether this is even desired in the first place.

I might be crazy, but I seem to have this issue as well. I was able to deposit my experience shortly after midnight EST on the day of the redesign to make sure I was good (Easy to do when you're a few hours behind on the West coast!) but I don't seem to have received any EXP after that. I don't recall exactly how much EXP I had at the moment, but I do know that the 50 EXP gap I had on the person ranked below me is now 30 EXP and I seem to be helpless :[

Hi!

I'm actually an engineer at Riot, so I'm totally in favor of having a good LoL thread.

"Indie" might not be the best descriptor anymore, as Riot and LoL seem to have become industry giants over the past year or so. We have a crazy amount of players (That infographic is probably already out of date). Heck, we're the only non-Korean game developer to have ever become a top 10 game in Korea other than Blizzard (Which they last did 7 years ago) and we haven't even been in open beta for a week there.

Oh, and my favorite champion is Fizz. Nothing feels better than executing a good trollpole.

That's because it IS an entry level processor. The first picture I posted in this thread pretty much summarizes how the A8-3850 peforms with respect to everything else. There doesn't seem to be any good explanation for why it has inflated passmark scores.

If you believe those charts, I have a bridge to sell you. This processor uses the same old Phenom II architecture. You seriously think that the A8-3850 performs better than the same-architecture six-core higher-clocked 1090T? Those charts are obviously inaccurate as hell. Try looking at a real review of that processor which shows that it performs on par with Intels ancient-as-hell Core2 Q6600, and, in summary, is "Pretty much an athlon II X4"

You said all i-series processors come with graphics. How did I contradict myself by saying that's not true? I also linked you to a website that actually reviewed the performance of that processor's graphics. Having me watch an interview with AMD isn't going to change the real world performance numbers.

So you get a crappy CPU with dedicated graphics that are notably worse than a $40 graphics card. Whoopee. Look, it's great for ultra low budget/power setups, but it is not at ALL what you're trying to say it is.

Why do you think every i'series processor comes with an intel graphics chip installed? The same chips you can find in Netbooks mind you.

No they don't. Only certain low-end/mobile CPUs and most Sandy Bridge processors have them.

People like this who are saying AMD is better have no idea what they're talking about. AMD is so behind the game right now that it's embarrassing. It's not even a question of who is a fanboy of who, but more of a "Why the hell has AMD been standing still for the past several years" sort of thing. In other words, evidently you guys don't really keep up with hardware much because AMD sucks ass right now if you're looking to build a new computer. It's gotten so silly that even Intel's quad cores completely destroy AMD's six cores, even in multithreaded tasks like 3D rendering. Don't take my word for it, there's plenty of evidence online.

Chart on the left: Gaming benchmark for L4D2, starting from the top. All the blue bars are Intel processors, with the first AMD processor (green) showing up in 21st place with the Phemon X4 980 black edition.

Chart on the right: A more multithreaded benchmark, with AMD showing up in 19th place with the Phenom II X6 1100T. It's behind a bunch of 4-cores despite having 6.

Those two processors are among AMD's best offerings. Here's to hoping that AMD's bulldozer architecture brings some actual competition to the market. Normally I wouldn't post something so verbose like this, but you guys actually had the poor OP looking in to AMD processors on a $1500 budget and it just had to stop.

Okay. Evidently I'm speaking for myself here, but I'm still trying to figure out why the hell I'm suddenly hearing about this book on every forum and website I frequent. We're talking about places whose users, usually geeks, gamers, and dweebs who usually don't touch books to begin with, are completely drooling over it. It feels like I missed some sort of giant worldwide memo here. Is it just because there's a fancy TV series for them? If this is book five, how come I didn't see drooling and discussions for the first four books?

More importantly, are the dragons in these books awesome and epic? Or stupid beasts that get killed with some tiny dude with a sword? Or, even worse, one of those books that put "dragons" in the title to sound awesome when they hardly have anything to do with the story? Help me out here...

I wouldn't mind playing some casual games with NG folks. I'm currently in the process of receiving an offer from Riot Games and will be working on LoL as a platform engineer soon. I haven't had time to play much and probably suck (I'm only level 9 and have never played versus human opponents), but it would be nice to get some more time in before I'm surrounded by people who play the game constantly.

Response to: Why do people use .jpegs? Posted June 23rd, 2011 in General

PNGs are good for images with a limited color palette like line art, various web design elements, etc. Like you said, they can also support having alpha (indexed or in its own channel). JPEGs are good for images with a lot of gradated/varied colors like photographs, paintings, etc. You can't just say one is superior to the other. Try saving a photograph as a PNG-8 and see how shitty it looks. Then try saving it as a PNG-24 and see how huge the filesize is. Then you'll see a good example of where a JPEG should be used.

Yeah, I'm sure there are many cases where people save an image as a JPEG when it'd be better off as a different format. Probably because it's so ubiquitous (i.e. I've seen old people call all digital images JPEGs). I'm also sure that people sometimes set the compression quality a lot lower than they need to, but that's their own fault. Still, for things like various artworks, a JPEG with the highest quality settings is indistinguishable from a lossless PNG (except maybe at the pixel level) and is often a fraction of the filesize. Also, many browsers and software libraries out there don't seem to fully support PNGs with alpha channels.

Also, if you're an artist, releasing only compressed JPEGs of your work may increase the strength of your ownership if you're the only one capable of producing an uncompressed version of the image (For printing purposes, merchandising, etc). So yeah. There's a few reasons that people use JPEGs.

The bad news is that SSDs are smaller drives than your regular drives.

That's why you RAID0 a bunch of them together! (With proper backup of course)

There really isn't that much of a speed gain because the OS sucks that way

Pretty much this. Not to mention it's a tool that's used, in some incarnation, in pretty much every piece of media nowadays. Chances are if you're not doing it frame by frame, you're "tweening" it. Keyframes in 3D animation, gradually changing one value (like opacity) to another, simple animations, etc. Might as well hate on people who use computers altogether. Any tool has potential for misuse.

And yeah I thought this was about the age group too. Probably because something like this would really belong in the animation forum.
