Topic: Idea For New Flash Rpg

I disagree. With a dedicated and talented team, it could be achieved. But let me put it straight, you're never going to get something close to, say, WOW in flash. That can't be done due to technical limitations. However, something on a much smaller scale in the realms of possibility in flash is certainly doable.

As mentioned above, there simply isn't a market for a flash mmorpg. Hell, that space in the realm of real PC games is already overcrowded. As also mentioned above, it's already done: Dofus. And that was a game that had a budget from the beginning and a relatively large team and it basically tanked.

Save your time.

Nice! I'm looking forward to seeing the game this is for.

I've been considering using polygons for my next next game. What's the speed like with your engine, does it handle many polys on screen and large levels?

keep us posted :)

I couldn't replicate the situation that led to that bug though, and when I tried to load it again, it was fine.

Oh damn oh damn oh damn. I had that bug appear quite regularly in the early stages, but I was almost certain I'd completely removed it. This might be a stretch, but do you remember which map you were loading and which one you had previously played? I think I know how I can make the loading method watertight, but that information would also be helpful.

Potentially game breaking though, if there is no 'return to menu' or reload button.

Press "Esc" :-)

Oh man did I just see a setProperty() function. What are you using, flash 4? :O

Anyway, to help with your problem it would help to actually see what's happening. It's hard for us to guess what's wrong with only a small code snippet and a vague description of the bug.

Do you have an on(rollOut) even handler? how are you telling flash to cease dragging the previous MC when you rollover a new one?

I've been working on this on and off for a while now, wanted to get some general feedback, so here it is.

http://users.tpg.com.au/asdfrewq/streaming/ga me.html
Controls are on the page, but I'll post them here too:
Controls: W: Jump, A/D: Left/Right, S: Float, 1-5: Change Weapons, E: Use objects, F: Flashlight, Mouse/Click: Aim/Shoot.

It's only 315kb so far, so no preloader and I won't post any screenshots because well.. it's only 315kb.. see for yourself!

Much of the art is still placeholder stuff, or my own fun dev graphics. so go easy yeah? And there's no sound thus far.

I should mention there's not much in the way of actual game flow, just a few levels that show off the game engine I'm working on here.

I'd really like some feed back, especially concerning performance, with and without special features such as lighting and particles. I feel just about any computer should be able to play the game with these effects turned off, so if it's a bit sluggish with them on, try turning them off and see how it goes. Information on your computer specs would be especially handy here, also.

And finally, the known bugs:
- Collision detection for roofs/sloped roofs is buggy/non-existent.
- Certain guns don't do radial damage, eg: rocket launcher/flame thrower.
- Framerates are unreliable between browsers (sigh) I managed to get firefox to play nice by adding blank frames to the main time line and letting flash play through them. This method only works for IE if I stream audio at the same time, but I'd rather not do that.
- There's some level design glitches, boxes floating on nothing, switches not working properly. No big deal, exactly, just little oversights. Since these are just my testing levels, i'm not too worried.
- Currently there's no particle limit, so sometimes you'll end up with absurd amounts of particles ultimately causing slowdown on some machines. If this is an issue, turn particle levels to medium or low.
- Stoping and starting trains can cause problems with the objscripting involved. Not such a big deal since trains will be fully automated in the release anyway.

That should be it. have fun.

So it's kinda true then? Good scripters suck at art while good artists suck at scripting (like me >_<).

Not exactly, but it takes a fairly large time investment to become good at just one of the two disciplines. To master both, takes a lot of work and dedication but there's generally no reason a scripter can't become a good artist or vice verser. It's just that most people, for better or worse, begin down one path and never look back. Some kids played with lego, some played with crayons... ;)

And so as to not derail too much, I shot you an email, Chris.

How could this possibly be not as bad as one might think? Are you saying sound and graphics are the only important thing in a game? That the coding is worthless? I really don't think there's any maybes about it, bud. That's theft. plain and simple.

Yep, the guys above me are quite correct, 40 iterations isn't really that much. But you really must keep in mind that you're limiting yourself as to how many enemies you can have in a level. And on top of that, you're going to be collision checking with all enemies, regardless of whether or not they're on screen or even dead.

A better method for your described problem would be to store all your enemies which are on screen and alive in an array then looping through that array using for...in.

I'm not going to tell you how to create and maintain that array, as it pretty much depends on how your engine is set up, but your collision checking method would look something like:

var poisonsArr:Array
// somewhere here would be your code for generating the data for the poisonsArr array...
onClipEvent(EnterFrame){
for (var i:Number in poisonsArr){
if (this.hitTest(_root.bg["poison"+poisonsArr[i]
].drop)) {
_root.health -= 1;
}
}
}
