Then that means everything can be proven. It's either fact or it is not, you can't have it both ways so you can pick and choose what arguement you want.

Dude, into a scientific discussion you're introducing the concept of absolute facts, that is not how the scientific and logical method works. You start from axioms you believe to be true ie. Newton's Laws of Motion, these may not be true but no thinking, rational individual can take issue with them (ignoring relativist effects ;P) then you look at the concequences of these axioms and physical phenomenon and preduce hypotheses based on observation and what we belive to be true. Then we test the hypothesis and come up with what we call a THEORY ie quantum THOERY. Then we test it experimentally and either accept it and keep on testing it or reject it and look for alternate thoeries. The important thing is quantum theory is different from fact because the only things we would call facts are the glarinly obvious and although quantum theory is rediculously accurate (akin to getting the distance from LA to NY wrong by less than the bredth of a human hair to cite a famous illustration) it is still a theory and so still being tested. As with quantum theory the exact way evolution happens may not be as the theory states, however all data points to it and so for a layman to dismiss it based on a hunch when you are no an expert in the field is just ignorant.

They're only arguing the same thing if think god and the universe are synonimous, you're leaving out the afterlife, judgement of sins, redemtion of sins, miracles, scriptures (taken literally or not), people without human fathers who were nailed to bits of trees for saying "wouldn't it be cool if we were all nice to each other for a change" and then came back to life etc.

Oxymoron anyone?

NO! i can PROVE the fundamental theory of algebra, I can PROVE Cauchy's residue theorem, if it can't be proven axiomatically it is a hypothesis, you don't understand the terminolgy.

That's messed up dude, you read on and see that whilst the kid that got beat up may or may not have been one who hung a noose he was subsequently "charged with possessing a firearm in an arms-free zone (the school grounds)" This whole thing stinks.

Perhaps usually rational people come over all fascist when they don't have to look the person they're expounding their views to in the eye? You're not really interacting with a person here, maybe this is why people seem to lack empathy? I can't say i've noticed it in the real world but most of the people my own age i speak to are fellow undergrads, get the odd chauvanist where he may or may not be being totally serious but that's about it.

This sounds pretty fucked up to me. What's the whole deal with this massive hatred towards people in jail, so they broke the law big deal. And punishment? I've always had a big problem with this part of any criminal justice system, what's the point of prison? Is it revenge or deterance? Because it seems insufficient for revenge and it simply criminalises people further.

Response to: Mocking Atheists Posted May 5th, 2006 in Politics

Christians mocking atheists hmmm. Should be hard if you find an intelligent atheist, about as hard as it is mocking an intelligent christian. However atheists have no bible to attempt to poke holes in nor institution to ridicule. Whatever, belief is a funny thing, for me the choice of god(s) vs atheism was based on the fact that there is NO evidence either way (seriously, think about it, i'm not going to explaIn this) and I simply do not believe in any god(s). This wasn't really even a choice i just don't believe. There's always the whole "believing can't hurt, you might go to heaven" thing, but really? I mean, sucking up to some invisible dude because you're scared that if you don't he might kick the crap out of you when you die? That's like keeping a gun loaded with silver bullets under your pillow in case a werewolf comes in the night (at least if they gave out free guns and silver bullets, and guns were cool where you live, but you get the idea). I suppose it's all a case of what helps you sleep at night. :s

Why is there not a socialy liberal, economically conservative party out there? i know there seems to be a contradiction in that but think about it, why do the people who want to control what we do let us keep our money whilst those who let us live as we would like (roughly) want to take it all?

no...should i be?

soz man i thought you were being ironic, seriously no offense. But you'd need a physically impossible string, it would require a string in which all the individual moleculs were attached to each other infinitly strongly, it's like sound travelling through a solid, sound is waves of compressions travelling through things right, it's like pushing and pulling on stuff at one end, but it doesn't come out the other end instantly. Again no offense meant dude, i didn't check how old you were, you might not have done enough physics in school yet, erm no offense meant in that either ... sorry it's 4.21am here, I've been taking advantage of new bar opening times here erm being from NY you probs have heard nothing about this but anyway the government in Britain has done something fun for once HOORAY

Response to: True Capitalism = America Posted November 26th, 2005 in Politics

freedom is not a black and white thing, true freedom for all means the strong will restrict the impose upon the weak eg anarchy and to a lesser extent capitalism, socialism restricts the freedom of the powerful and gives power to the weak (in theory) a balance between the 2 is the way to the truest freedom that man can acheive. Saying "freedom = capitalism" or "socialism = freedom" is bogus, neither is true, as with all things a compromise must be reached, this happens through debate and the fairly democratic (for true democracy is a terrible thing) systems most industrialised nations have is a good way to acheive freedom. if you disagree please respond but i would say that america is no less free than britain, probably less free in certain critical aspects, we seem to have (as far as i can see) a far more deeply ingrained tendancy to ridicule and distrust authority, leading to more independant mainstream thought.

ps. i'm a student, so i may have a warped view of things, plz forgive this :D

all governmemts get their power from the people, even if it just means convincing enough of the people to torture anyone who doesn't like things the way they are, democracy is just a good way of giving people what they want without making them want stupid things (most of the time anyway *cough* iraq *cough*)

Response to: Liberal Vocabulary Test. Posted November 25th, 2005 in Politics

Bar the below-average mind bit the question is pretty much innofensive and fairly factual isn't it? one of bush's charms to american voters is his plain speech, is it not? and he is sometimes incoherent so perhaps the 'for once' thing could be seen as a point of view thing but all in all it isn't THAT bad, parents groups are so uptight.

[a possibly relevant aside]
Being British, although i do understand where it comes from, the whole american way of calling preachy left wing people liberals seems pretty odd, from what liberal actually means saying you're against it is basically like admitting you're a bigot who wants to tell people how to live their lives (at least that's how most people except the FAR right would read it) cultural differences are fun :D

personally i think extended opening hours are a good idea, kicking people out onto the street at 11pm is bloody stupid if people want to drink why not let them? they are looking at each request for extended licencing laws individually yes? why penalise pubs where there are never any problems? the only problems i see near why i live (in the pubs at least) are the odd catatonic alcy but they're gonna get drunk no matter what you do so let the rest of us stay up and have a nice long session without having to go to a club or go home and drink.

electron of light?

Response to: The Speed Of Light Has Been Broken! Posted November 25th, 2005 in Politics

you can't see light moving anyway, there is no way to observe photons accurately (see Heisenbergs uncertanty princple) the 300 time speed of light is that it takes the light 1/300 of the time it should take to cross the caesium atoms, not the entire chamber, since the caesium atoms are approx 10^-10m across this clearly a quantum effect, it has long been known that the fact that nothing can move faster than the speed of light is not entirely absolute at quantum scales this is the inconsistency between quantum theory and relativity, and will probably only be resolved by a unified theory eg. string theory, this will not "disprove" either qunatum theory or relativity (both have been proven far too accurately experimentally to be completely untrue) it will probably just lead to a slight redress of our understanding of the mechanics of both theories at certain scales.

's right tho i would say gamma is usually defined as (1-(v^2)/(c^2))^-1/2, but it comes out the same by using the inverse. The experiment is meaningless in the faster than light travel way because no information is transmitted faster than the speed of lighr in a vacuum, see http://en.wikipedia...ions_and_experiments

Response to: British Petrol Conspiracy Posted November 23rd, 2005 in Politics

anyone else get annoyed when the goverments says tax on petrol is 70%, seems to me they calculated that in an odd way, vat 17.5% (i think) means they add 17.5% of the original price onto that price and that's what you pay. With petrol 70% of what you pay is tax, expressed the same way as VAT that's more than 200% (at least that's the way i assume vat is calculated) i think expressing it that way gets the point across better YOUR PETROL IS 3X AS EXPENSIVE AS IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE OF THE THEIVING GOVERNMENT, (in the context of this thread i don't care where that money goes, just thats it's coming out of my pocket)

But anyways, what I am pointing out is that by travelling at a faster speed, your body will age faster and the main reason behind that is that time will appear slower to you because your body as been accelerated due to the change in continuous molecular velocity.

dude if you're travelling at a faster speed your metabolism go any faster, it's the same no matter what, it's like one of the main postulates of special relativity i'd give you a source but i can't remember my lecturer's name , biology has nothing to do with it.

a more scientific source would be nice but still, noone should get too excited, from reading the article and not having seen a site offering any scientific explanation i'd guess that this is a quantum mechanical effect and quantum electro dynamics already contradicts relativity. unifying relativity and quantum mechanics is one of the mains goals of theoretical physics at the moment, physicists are going to step forward one day and say "actually you can go faster than the speed of light in vacuum, no probs, our bad".

This is turning into a chicken and egg thing for western interventionalism on failing and threatening (let's be honest) arabic nations and islamic terrorism. Anyway insurgents in iraq are not fighting occupation they also murder egyption diplomats etc, they really don't give a flying fuck about the iraqi people and are pretty damn opposed to the freedoms being given to them, iraqi militants attacking coalition forces is different but they sure as fuck had nothing to do with london. Sorry if that sounds a bit The Quest For Global Freedom, The American Way!! but coalition forces are in iraq now trying to help, sure they kill innocents, bummer, but they aren't TRYING to intentions mean a hell of a lot.
