Its pretty cool. I wish my bird could sort of flap his wings a few times and hover. That would give me some more control in a fun way

Well I guess there isn't as much interest as I thought there would be around doing a reg lounge collaboration. The offer still stands if anyone wants to reach out to me and offer some ideas. Maybe people are just busy right now. I'm pretty busy with my full-time job and doing projects on the side, but pulling 80 hour weeks is not a big deal to me. Also I have no social life, so that helps too.

I definitely disagree with you, and I think that's a bad mindset. I don't really care who is a "professional". I know theres a number of really talented people in this reg lounge. I think if we all invested a little bit of time each week we could eventually make something neat or at least learn something from each others coding styles. I imagine using Git for version control. I have a number of unused private repos on github. I think theres a number of game types or genres that lend themselves well to having multiple devs. Something randomly generated? Sandboxxy?

Happy new year guys. I am working on revamping my LD22 entry a little bit. Check it out

Left: before
Right: after

Also I think this is the year we should do a programmer collab of some kind. Making a game perhaps? Maybe a game that's well suited to a bunch of programmers working on it. I am up for ideas! Anyone else willing to consider it?

I may come to the NYC meetup.. Would love to hang out with some NG Fellers and I've only been there once before. We'll see.. I might need to think about how many thousands of dollars it will cost me to get a hotel.

There would still be a few noobie topics, but imo they'd hopefully be a bit more interesting than "This doesn't work, here's my code:" followed by gazillion badly formatted lines of code.

I like this idea too. Rename the forum game development and make a separate forum for animation. I see far more game related posts in here.

Btw have a good holiday Everyone! Let's make some cool stuff in the new year!

serious as3 problems or anyone: Should be a developers forum I think although I wouldn't mind if the rules were relaxed a little bit.

games factory: I don't care if people use. I am personally not interested in it. I don't care if people ask questions about it.

renamed actionscript: Maybe. I wouldn't mind but I never come to talk about the flash authoring tool. Maybe some people do? Im not sure.

other forums: SFSC, FGL, Twitter, Stackoverflow

opinion of the forum now: It's pretty flimsy. The people here are great. I just wish we had more of them. I think the problem is that newgrounds isn't really what people think of when they think about flash development anymore. I'm not sure if the flash scene in general is just shrinking. There are more outlets for development now. Kids are much more interested in building for their android or iphone and most of them probably have never even heard of newgrounds. Obviously as people get older they get jobs which is what has happened with a lot of people here. This is all just speculation. I really don't know.

How to improve? I'm not really sure if theres a solution honestly. I will always be hanging around here though. So once the rest of you all leave I'll just sit in here and talk to myself.

name: Bryce

age: 23

best language: AS3 is my most comfortable language. I like python a lot too.

worst language: I don't know.

career: developer at a big tech company

ideal career: not totally sure honestly. I just want to make cool stuff!

how i got into flash: I started making terrible animations that you can still see on my page. I started fooling around with making games when I was around 16 and I decided I was better at that.

what I think of it: It's great!

is it a career or hobby: Both!

I am thinking about live-streaming my whole dev process. There would be a lot of cursing probably.. 48 hours is not much time to make a game.
is the theme out yet? I guess not, since voting started a few days ago?

I'll check it out right now...

They announce the theme right as the competition starts. So it starts on Friday at 9pm EST and goes until sunday at 9PM EST. I would highly encourage anyone to participate. It's a little huger than the NG game jams and it's a totally solo competition. You can use game frameworks or your own libraries if you want, as long as you declare them beforehand.. and even if your game isn't great atleast you made a game!

Yeah one week is lame. It needs to 24/7 thing for only a few days, otherwise stamina runs out. Plus not all of us are in school and have christmas break. Some of us actually have jobs so the playing field is not really equal. Better to choose 2 or 3 days over a weekend. Looks like I will be sitting this one out. I think I may do Ludum Dare instead. It's in Dec as well.

I'm taking a break from my game to try this for fun today: http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/12/instagr am-jobs/

I already have a job so I'm just in it for the shirt, and improving my python skills. It was kind of a bitch getting PIL to work on mac. This is no longer flash related so technically I am off topic, but I thought you guys might find that interesting.

I don't think I have another time right now to start another project, but anyone who wants to lend me a hand with my A* game is welcome to PM me :)

This weekend I am going to try and do some more work with GAE. i have the channel API set up but I need to set it up so that the server and client can communicate with JSON objects.

Response to: The Flash 'Reg' Lounge Posted November 10th, 2011 in Game Development

It wouldn't be that it's necessarily hard to pull off, but you would need a clear design and some dedicated people. You could use source control and if its a huge project you could even use some kind of code review tool too. There might be certain types of games more suited to this.
