Tom, could you tell us what you think about P-Bot?
He did respond, go check today's ( Jan 21) P-Bot bbs.
That's with the scroll-over window opened.
Cool update, great.
Now, about that P-Bot design, I'v read what you wrote and made some adjustments.
If you're always going to keep P-Bot the way he is right now, or if I'm getting annoying with this, let me now, I'll stop posting designs.
My new idea is much like the other one. Instead of the whole P-Bot post, there would be only a P-Bot Icon ( possibly animated). At his side, the daily top 5 the way it used to be. There would also be a big "Daily top Five"( possibly flashing)and under that title, "scroll over P-Bot for more info" would be added. When P-Bot would be scrolled-over ( possibly with a little robot noise...) a gray window, the same size as the normal P-Bot post would appear on the screen. This window would cover the witdh of the screen ( minus the banners and up/down scroll bar). Users could then click on whatever links they want. This window would close whenever the pointer would leave the window.
Here's why I think this is better than P-Bot.
-( obviously) Fresh news will always be on top of the BBS, and will always be noticed upon entering NG
- It would add something special to the front page, a bit more life. The daily top five would be a lot flashier and visible more so if there was a little animation to go with P-Bot, or if he himself was animated somehow.
-With this new concept, users who don't care that much for the top 5 could be informed quickly about the new stuff and could check it out as fast as they can right now. More interested users would simply have to scroll over for the details.
-The text font would be the same size as it is now, so the window wouldn't change shape.
Well, tell me if this is any better. Are there still problems? If so, do you want me to post more ideas or just let it go?
Keep shotgun man.
Change the music if you want
I know assassin rocked back "in the days", but let's face it, the portal is infinitely cooler than it!
What!? No P-Bot hate posts today? Well, I guess something will have to be done about that...
"Die P-Bot, u'r gay, blahrg grrrah!!! etc."
Ah! That hit the spot...
On a more serious note, I really like P-Bot, but he takes to much space, so I will continu posting this picture until everyone has seen my idea which I think would solve all the P-Bot hate problems.
Tom, Wade, Liljim,(or anyone NG user who is reading this and who cares) if anyone of you read this, could you please tell me if my idea is good, unfeasable, stupid, genius, shitty, to simple, to complicated; whatever!
my idea: simply replace P-Bot post with a scroll over P-Bot.
the solution to this P-Bot problem:
I think this BBS post proves 1 thing: P-Bot bot is as bad for the BBS as he is good for the portal top 5. It's weekend, this post has been up for half a day and it has less than 30 replies. And the one under it has been there for one or two days and has less than 40 comments! It might be long before users get used to him and go look below him for fresh news, and even then, it will be so easy to forget to look...
Of course, it might be that people have already said everything they had to say about P-Bot. Or maybe everyone has gone snowboarding in the rockies for the weekend...
I don't know if it's been suggested but...
maybe you could replace the P-Bot BBS with a P-Bot icon that would be located above the most recent BBs post. Then, by scrolling over it with the mouse, a window, like the one in the portal's 50 most recent submission, containing all the information needed. Under P-Bot, there would be a BBs link on wich people could click to acces the P-Bot topic. You could also make the P-Bot icon a little animation.
I think that would be a great way to showcase the most recent cool stuff while letting people see the most recent BBS first thing whrn they get to the front page.
And keep those rotations coming!
I see a lot of puplicity on your site and they don't bother me that much, I know you need the money, so, I was wondering, is there anything, aside from buying stuff, that we can do with these ads to generate money for newgrounds (like joining something).
I'm sure that if there was some way, you'd get "richer" and you might be able to get rid of (completely random example) coke ads.
If there is no way, then, continue putting all the publicity you need on your site.
A content rating system...
Sounds like a great idea.
Will you prevent minors from watching the adult movies after they are rated?
Will all the users be able to vote on some sort of rating system or will there be a selection comitee?
I like NG parodies...
About that poll that went on a while back, about a movie documenting the NG history, what's going to happen with that? Will there be a newgrounds movie.
That is it!
If anyone has read this bbs post, know this:
Half the people who complain think that Wade and Tom want to rob them of their right to vote or something! What they are after are people who are sitting in front of their computers all day voting 0 on every god damn portal entry, without watching, looking at the file size or even reading the submission's name!!! They are not some kind of frickin' Hitlers!
Voting 0 on everything is dumb and assholish. But zero doesn't mean that it's extremely offensive anymore, that's the whisstle. My rating scale is this:
whisstle: never used it yet. I would blow it on a submission like "dead baby wassup", which displayed horrifying images of bloody dead newborns saying " wassup!"
0: used it a lot. Something that should be blammed in the next 20 minutes. I don't need to give examples.
1: use it sometimes. Deserves turd of the week, made me smile.
2: used it a lot. Normal flash that deserves to stay, but that is not really great in any way.
3. use it sometimes. Deserves daily "top 10"
4. not too often. Deserves daily feature and maybe even front page.
5. not often. Deserves top fifty.
I don't use 0 just to insure maximum blamming probabilities, nor do I use 5 to insure protection. Many users might think I'm harsh. I am. That is why I have chosen a dark aura. Think about it: if all nor bad movies got a 5, what would a really high score mean? On Ng, there are generous and not so generous users, and this balance makes movies get the score they deserve, and it's great!
About that +=- thing: it's pure stupidity! Having a range of one to five equals much fairer accurate votes! Think about it, who would have voted "-" on any of the top 50 movies when they entered the portal? Then all these movies would have a perfect score? Then a bunch of users who would want that movie to go down would just go and vote "-" on it all the time. The voting system should go up to 0-10 if you want fair votes that much. As for me, I think the current voting numbers are perfect.
For all the brainiacs out there who say that blam/ protection points should be dealt with, here's a little story... Once upon a time, in the portal, in a simpler time when blam/protection didn't exist, movies where recieving less than 60 votes/ views before they vanished into the dephts of the portal. The authors where getting little feedback as the voters only voted five times a day, usually on movies titles with a green or blue color bar on them. Even worse, the users had a blam count for every movie they personnaly sent to the grave, so people where holding back their votes until they could be almost sure to be the one to destroy a movie. And even worse than that, the portal was getting swarmed with unblammed / unprotected movies that no one ever watched. Around that time, the portal population was above 20 000!
Then, the Ng gods decided to implant the blam/ protection system, which rewarded users for casting votes. At that time, the great "Gathering of Points" begun, smarter Ng users went in the last pages of the portal and blammed all the extremely crappy movies there. Soon, the portal population dropped by 20%. No more movies where leaving the recent submission page without being blammed of protected and better movies could stay 3-4 days on the list, and so, get a lot more exposure. All the portal problems seemed to be solved...
But then, Ng realised that to much blam/ without vote was going on, so they decided to try new things to make people watch aaaaaaaall the entries they voted on, which brings us to current days.
........And that is why removing the blam/protection system will only create problems or "de-evolve" the site.
If you're wondering what score to give to what movies, here's a little trick. Watch the first three movies on the top fifty. They deserve a "5". Watch the last three movies in the portal ( view all). They deserve "0". Do the same thing for movies with scores of exactly 1.00, 2.00, 3.00. You should get the picture.
Why do some users recklessly vote 0 on everything? Because they know 85% of the entries they vote on will get deleted anyway, so, easy blam points. This indeed is contrary to the portal spirit and sucks.
I don't know the proportion of users who do that nor do I know how much power they wield, but I seriously doubt they could have enough strengh to blam a movie like Beebo of Final task.
Here is something you should think of: A filter that automaticaly enables the non-monitored blamming of movies under 40k, with a title containing "free blam" or "blam please". You should also think about periodicaly banning users every time 10 of their movies get blammed. This will force them to not resubmit crap or to improve or stop spamming.
I would also support the idea of not being able to vote without having submitted anything, but Flash is indeed a very complicated program and perhaps hard to get most people, so it would be a bit unfair. And it would most certainly lower the site traffic quite a bit.
NO MORE WHINNING ABOUT THE PORN ADDS! Unless you personnaly are going to send Tom Fulp a 1000$ check.
Now, for some constructive ideas.
Do something about the movies that are still on the portal but have a score below 1.5. You could delete 15 pages of crap! You could do an annual blamfest where everyone would be invited to vote 0 on these movies so they free up some space for newer stuff! Or you could just delete them ( without awarding any points to any one, of course). Getting rid of these will pose the problem of "What about my turd of the week award!".
How's this: a whole portal section only for Turd of the Week Winning Entries!
And scrap that obituary! Or make it delete all the 2 months or older stuff: the authors had ample time to read the reviews!
Well, I hope at least one person is going to read/ reply to this, because it was a bit long to type.
In my family, we either want nothing or something too expensive, which led to an overflow of chocolate; we all gave each other chocolates...
and we got a new printer...
Seems faster... Oh wait.. My God!!! What an age to live in! Newgrounds is fast! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! I have waited for so long... thank you...
...great... another game. in this one, you get to crush little green things with the unholy power of you nut-sack. How much time did you spend on this thing... no, it's more like: " How much time didn't you work on Alien Hominid 2 to finish this?"
I'm no one's boss, and I have no right to tell you what you have to do or not do, but I think I speak for all NG users when I say that it is time to finish Alien Hominid 2 and/or Pico 2 and/or the Miss dynamite game. You don't have to do all of them at once you know, and if you post only one of these before you make your next children-slauthering game, everyone will be happy. (or happier)
And don't think I find you new games crappy and boring; I enjoy them alot ( especially Domo-Kun), but I liked Alien Hominid so much better...
DO WHAT YOU WHANT, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT NG WHANTS
...I have always hated those little brown bastards. Well, I'll still watch it.
Very well done, and as usual with your Flash games, it's quite hard. Well at first. And after. Poor brown thing doesn't have a lot of lives and HP, but the game is packed with sooo many neat stuff and game modes that, even if I would rather it be Alien Hominid 2, I... um do that hat thing to you... "hand my hat off" or sometin'...
This system was obvious because it is the simplest and most effective way of dealing with the two authors system.
I agree with The_Behemoth: Sizzler's idea would lead to confrontations, but since both authors could say they did an equal part and have their names under "co-producer", I think it would work fine.
A small problem I see though would be fot the user's grades. Since some co-authors might have done a crapier job than the other co-authors, the others might get angry to see that all their hard work raised the grade of someone else. I know this problem is more of a between authors than a newgrounds one, but maybe you could leave the option to have each team member grade the others ( of course this will only happen with 3 or more) so that they receive that percentage of the movie's grade.
Let's say the movie has a B and the author is given a 6/10 average by the others, then is grade would be 60% of a B, whatever that is
Maybe you could make a longer credits list, including Drawings, programming, music, scenario etc. If the projet had a lot of people involved, that way, we will know who did what, making it so that we can congratulate of critique of submitter in particular in the reviews.
As for the problem of having unwanted collaboration links in your profile, just make it so that the people who try to "colaborate" with good artists too often suffer sever sanctions.
I hope that these new changes will encourage people to work together and make ng better
It's a cool feature, but since it's only going to be useful to the authors, I don't really care for it much.
A while back, I stumbled upon the NG page where the top reviewers and top uploaders where and I though you could put these features in the "Users" link and make new top 50. ( One for reviews, for uploads and also one for the most BBS posts)
I was wondering is normal users could post topics on the front page ,not those little "in between things", but like the ones I am replying to right now.
If not, it would be fun to enable users with a lot of experience ( therefore who know the portal best) to post some. Might I suggest 3650exp. (one year)
your such a naive little bastard arent you? or stupid? many tests have been run. good movies with initial low scores got blammed 95% of the time, and bad movies with an initial high score got protected 90% of the time. also the only thing wrong with what soem people are sayign about the viruses etc is that sometimes people will lie in the review to get people to blam it
If you ever read this, well, don't bother replying.
Watever happens to a movie, if it truly deserves to stay (2.5 or higher), then it will, otherwise whether it gets blammed or not, no one cares but the author.
Now, until you make any movies, dont't have "you never made any movies" as an argument, watever the reason.
Higher standards on newgrounds will make it so that authors put a lot of heart and work into their movies. Remember, if a movie is truly good, not average-no-one-will-care-in-one-day movie, it will stay, no matter the voting system.
And I plan to start making stuff soon, so that you can get your little revenge and whack on my head.
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW IF THIS SYSTEM IS GOOD, HAVE A POLL IN A WEEK OR TWO, THEN YOU WILL SEE IF MOST OF THE PEOPLE LIKE IT OR NOT. (but you propably thought about already... you're so clever)
There are so many people who think that there are a lot of good movies who get blammed since this new system is up, and they ask questions like "Would you vote 0 on heroes of cybertron just to get a blam points??" The thruth is that movies who deserve to live are protected and those who deserve to die are blammed. And nothing will ever change that, watever you do. Sometimes, movies who deserves around 1.00-2.00 get a bit more random scores, they might be blammed or they might not be, but if they are, the author resubmits and if they aren't, they end up turd of the week.
Some others users have pointed out that without the reviews, we can't see if a movie is stolen or contains a virus, and this is indeed quite troubling. Maybe you could make the reviews appear after the work "Virus" or "Stolen" appears in three diffirent reviews.
Poxpower, do you even understand the point of the whole voting system?? It's not here just for people to get their blam/protection points. It's here so people can contribute to getting rid of crap and 'recommend' good movies for others (who don't hang out at NG all day) to watch.
In the end, no matter what internet connection you have, no one should have the right to vote without viewing. Period.
Come on, having more voting power is fun, and you should know, you have plenty. I was just saying that because it really must suck for a person with a slow connection to wait 20 mins to wait for a movie to load, then watch it and realize it sucks, by which time the said person will vote 0, but much too late to get a point. Now, that has to be frustrating! Blam/ Protection points, I agree, should not be the focus of the voting system, but they are plain fun, and they got rid of 4000 old crap flashes and allowed every new movie to be get more views and votes.
Nope. When I suggested this a while ago, it was pointed out by Wade (I think) that people will intentionally hold onto their one vote until a movie reaches 50, look at the score and get a point.
I know, but that was before the blam/protection points, there was only a blam point for the person who sent the movie to the grave, which led to the holding back of votes. If the score re-appeared when the movie was nearly dead, it would only be blammed right away. But it's not that important.
WOW!Already Updated the new system! Good work, now it's as fair as its going to get.
Maybe you could make the votes re-appear on movies who have less than 1.00 after 30 votes and who are of more than 1 meg, it would leave an equal chance to people with fast and slow modems to score a point (which is fun) by blamming a big crap ( which is also fun).
You should also put an animation for the person who casts a protecting (100th) vote, that way it would be equally cool and fun to blam or protect a movie.
I guess the ultimate test for this system is submiting it to a poll ( which I precict would get a favorable response)
And maybe you could change the level icons someday, I mean, we've all seen them now and they are not as cool as they where back in the day. Maybe you could add more levels, so people would change more often ( it is soo long after level 10!). How about weapons from video games, like a gunblade or a Katana. Or...a uzi, from Pico2... or ... you know... that... um... ray gun, from the second level of Alien hominid...
Well anyways, keep up the extremely good work
Yes, but people with slooooooow connections also find
difficult to VOTE, even if votes are in in first place!
Anyway, if there are at least 20 new movies
a day, there is plenty of good movies as there are
of bad ones. Check out the author rank and the
vote, always from the portal itself! This rules
for sllllooooww connections :)
Well, before I got my curent connection, I had a 56K, and it was fast enough to vote on movies, but too slow to view movies above 500K, so you see, now, with this system, people with slow connections will be even more impaired and disadvantaged for their blam/protection points than the others.
In the first case, the movie is going to be blammed
soon (1.00 limit @ 50 votes IIRC), in the second,
it's just plain STUPID! Why you should deprive a potential Today Feature the place it deserves with a 0?
Sorry, it was a typing error which I realised only after posting, I meant there is nothing wrong if you vote 3 on that movie.
The new system simply makes the difference from pimping
for the point to voting for its quality!
Look, frankly, I don't like the new system that much, but I'm not totaly against it either, all movies should get a fair chance, but honestly, have you ever heard of an A movie being blammed? The worst thing that could happen before was that a movie deserving a 2 got blammed, now, if people vote according to the reviews or the grades, better movies might go bye-bye and crappier ones could stay. Now, as I have said, only time will tell if this new system works and watever I say now is pure speculation.
HOW ABOUT GIVING THIS SYSTEM ONE WEEK OR TWO OF TRIAL, THEN HAVE PEOPLE VOTE ON A POLL TO SEE IF IT SHOULD STAY, GO OR BE IMPROVED.
Wow! These codes weren't here an hour ago, I was pleased to see that we now could view all the movie info by going over it with the pointer, but that little question mark is annoying.
First, I don't think its to bad of an idea, and it's not because I have a lot of blam/protection points that I will crap on this update, but I have an internet provider, in Canada, who sets a limit of downloads, and we are 3 to share this limit in my house ( and some of us download a lot), so I would be pissed to have to watch a 4meg crap about sticks killing each other or containig an uncompressed sound file.
It's not my case, but some people have sloooooooow connections, and I think banning them isn't fair, nor is this! Think about the time they'll have to spend in front of their comp to get to a security guard if they don't know what the movie score is.
If you think it will rid the portal of abusive blamming / protecting, well, I say you are wrong. Although only time will tell, I think that now, instead of going with the crowd, people will vote based on the file size of the movie or the grade of the moviemaker. And also, people will base their votes on the reviews they will see, and that is even worse, because some reviewers have been know to be stupid, unfair and to lie, so a piece of shit might be protected and a worthy movie might be blammed.
Suggestions? Maybe you could make the score reappear at 45-50 votes, that way, you insure that most of those votes are fair and that people with slow connections will get to score a point without watching. (I mean, what's wrong with voting 0, without watching, on a movie which has a 0.04 score after 45 votes or one which has a 3.35 score after 50 votes)
Another thing you could do is raising ( again, I know) the blam/protection threshold and making the score viewable after 100 votes, that way the crap will be long gone and slow users or the ones with limits will get to have a point and they will tend to watch a bigger movie if they know it's good.
Now, maybe the site would run faster if you deleted all the old movies who have a score of less tan 1.5, that would clear ,like, 20 pages!
Oh well, I hope you read this Tom, because I've been around since the beginning and I would like to see newgrounds continue its evolution, this site has some incredible potential. And keep the upgrades coming!
Happy thanksgiving to you all down there in the U.S.A., us Canadians have already celebrated (but hey, we just don’t know any better, isn’t that right?)
I have been waiting for that upgrade since assassin was the coolest thing around here and crappy movies where at the top 50. I have created an account a good while ago, but at one point, the server got so slow that it took me 45mins each day to record my 10 points! So I left for a couple of months (which I regret… sob). Even now, the site is so slow that sometimes, by the time the voting page is loaded, the movies I try to blam or protect are already gone or above 100 votes.
I think this server was also hindering the blam/protection points functionality because it took forever too load 100-200k entries.
Thank Go… Fulp for the soon to come upgrade!!!
Bush is a very stupid man, he always was, he always will be.
Bush is not stupid, he's greeeeeedy, he knows what's best for him. And if he's dumb, then a lot of dumd people voted for him. Don't worry, I know that tomorrow is not the day we will se M. Bush in a car that doesn't destroy the earth. And yes, I also know that Bush's blabla on Saddam is mostly a distraction for all the other problems in his coutry.
If Iraq sent a nuke your way, what would you do?
What if your weapon inspectors don't find all the deadly nuclear and chemical weapons they where looking for?
It propably won't grow to the proportion of a nuclear war - Bush is not stupid (if he is, why is he the president...), but if you attack Iraq, many innocents will die; it's not because the U.S.A. say they will only bomb Saddam (if they ever find him) that they will, heck, U.S. soldiers even managed to kill canadians in Afghanistan!
Anyway, we all know that the stakes here are oil wells, not terrorism. I suggest we get electrical cars, or maybe hydrogen, much cleaner, and once they are commercialised, they won't be that expensive.
... So I see... If someone attacks the U.S.A., the U.S,A. fights back, you know, legitimate defence... not! Have we learned nothing yet:
If not fighting back makes people cowards, then I guess Ghandi is a coward... And Jesus also, and Martin Luther king... and these people have achieved nothing at all now haven't they? What will happen once the U.S.A has nuked Irak? Aside from having destroyed a whole nation of innocent (...) people just for the sake of killing a bunch of crazy-ass extremists. It would be like if China decided Bush was evil ( let's say that he would have blown up one of their many...many many landmarks) and nuked the entire state of Washington... It's not all the innabitants of Irak who want Saddam at their head, there are still a few of them.
Look at what is happening in Israel and Palestine, they are using the brute force method... it seems to work really well...
On the other hand, the people America is dealing with a bunch of extremists and there is propably no way to reason with them, but I think that there is no way that starting a nuclear war will make anyone on this planet happier.
First of all, higher I.Q is not a factor of real intelligence or success in life. It's not because you can count faster than you grandpa that you're going to be able to succeed in your life. It's not the people who count the fastest who best others, it's those who can manipulate the public and who can take their place by imposing themselves as leaders ( and also those without pity or remorse... which is sad).
Videogames are almost all violence, if anyone of you can tell me how bashing aliens and dragons is going to make you more intelligent, I'd like to hear you.
Our grandparents didn't even finish school anyway! The great majority of them never set foot in a college and i'm not even sure if most of them had a high school diploma. Come on, they where all farmers or workers in some factory, and the women stayed at home all day cooking and taking care of the children! How and why would they have been smarter than us?
Our parents have received much better education but still, there is a smaller percentage of them who have high school education than our generation.
Now that we are all well-educated, our children probably won't have a higher I.Q than us. Let's think about it, did our great grand parents have a lower I.Q than their children (and so on)? If not, why are our parents "smarter" than our grandparents: they didn't have video games! And what about all the places on earth where people don't have video games ? They're all dumber?
I think this "study" is a load of bullshit designed to make North Americans and Europeans think they are smarter because they can buy these games and because their kids spend a lot of time playing them. One last thing, who funded this survey? A video game company?...
p.s: I like video games, but they don't make one smarter!
