See, youMd hate a club, so you'd qualify as a member! And it's not even paradoxal, since nothing says you can't be part of a club you hate!

I like Zelda, I like FF, I like Mega-Man, MK, but I don't whant to be part of any clubs related to that, come on, what's the point? I'd rather be part of a funny-useless club than a serious boring one.
No offence.

Sorry, I'm not against any club in particular. I started this tread/ club knowing many people would say it was done before ( at least, looking at my profile, they won't think I'm a Noob). This club is kind of like most of the jokes in the Simpsons: it's ironic. It's only purpose is to make a club that, in its essence, is against itself, just for the sake of doing so, because it seems to me that most clubs started now ( Mega-man club, Zelda club etc.) are just created because they don't already exist.
This club is not to cause a revolution, or any kind of change at all on NG, it's just to laugh, in a non-harmful way, at this whole club craze. I think the name is funny also. Imagine, if a lot people joined this club ( and others also), NG would be a lot more colorful.

Just add the signature pic I've included below in your BBS signature and specify which club you don't like.

I know you're going to tell me I'm only encouraging hatefulness among NG members. To that, I will reply: not really. It's for fun, that's all.

Colorful Insults Posted February 11th, 2003 in General

Have you noticed how, sometimes, insulting reviews are very funny to read? How some very stupid jokes get people laughing? How Jackass and Tom Green have become popular ( to some degree) because they did stupid stuff?
-Are you someone with a lot of creativity?
-Are you good at insulting others?
-Do you write a lot of hateful reviews or BBS posts?
-Do you like to laugh a lot?

This topic is for you! You can write all the colorful and inventive insults your mind comes up with, and then read what other users have came up with and get a laugh out of that.
Here's what you can do:
-Write a very insulting text to a fictive character
-Find a review you think is very funny, but make sure we don't know who wrote it for which movie
-Post a funny picture of anything
-Get back at someone you hate ( no naming said person please!!!!)

This topic is meant to be used in all and pure good fun, so don't directly insult people, just make someone up or be sure it's a person who won't care or who will never ever ever ever find out. If you're going to use this insult forum as a mean to de-anger yourself, or to relax after you've had a stressful day because of some person you hate, PLEASE GO AHEAD, but, DO NOT GIVE ANY SPECIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE PERSON, like last name, address or whatever.

HAVE FUN' EVERYONE, I HOPE THIS THING BECOMES A GREAT SOURCE OF ENJOYEMENT FOR ALL.

See guys? Tom doesn't want you to write stuff like that.

I don't know if he whant you to write that or not, he just wants to be sure people who read it won't think it has any relevance. Good, very good. Now, it seems some people are getting annoyed by the abundance of rules on NG and the severity of the repercussions on assholes. Well...

First off, NG has had to make more rules over the years because of its ever-growing user base. As more people came in, more (negative term of your choice, might I suggest buttpeople)have come also. At one point, so many came that it actually made an impact, a very negative impact, so, now there are rules to deal with their abuse. Nice people should not be afraid of them (the rules) because they only punish those who are nasty ( insert negative term again). BTW, you DO fall in that category if you have hired your little sister to vote 0 on every NG entry for you when you're at school, or when you write stupid and nasty reviews to authors just for the sake of doing so and because you think you're funny/clever.
Don't forget that NG gives you rights, but with rights also come responsability. You have the right to vote on any movies, but you have the responsability of using this power responsably. You do have the right to review movies, or wright a BBS post, but please, be smart enough to not litter Newgrounds with your crap.
Example:For all those of you who don't know what happened in France during the elections, here's a recap:
During the elections, former president Chirac was the leading candidate by far. In the campaign for presidency, ran another guy, Jean-Marie LePen, who was almost a Nazi.It seemed he didn't have much of a chance. No one knows what happenned then, but LePen actually came 2nd! People freaked out! On the second vote ( it works like that in France) Chirac won by far, indicating that perhaps people had not been voting responsably on their first vote, thinking Chirac would win anyways.
You see kids, that'a what happens when you don't use your power to vote responsably. They almost had a Nazi for president!
( By the way, I know LePen was not that bad and that it might have been the people's actual choice, but c'mon, work with me on this one!)

The repercussions are very severe, not because the people cause a lot of damage ( they do cause some, but not that much...) but because we are all tired of bastards now. There are enough all around the world or in the streets, so, NG fans should not have to endure those people.

As for the new system, I think its perfect. Some people might think the author should be able to delete reviews, but that wouldn't work because some people would delete all the bad reviews and keep only the ones who gave them 10. The new system alows everyone to see all the reviews and enables the author to report excessive cases, just like the whistle. I don't see this as a voting system, I see it as a new whistle. Don't be afraid to write reviews, because if the author constantly reports minor cases, he'll be ignored. ( I hope)

Well, much speculation there is about this new music-related section. The most obvious guess is a Sound Portal. Maybe something commercial, like: sell your Flash/clips. Ng radio? good idea! That would replace the long-lost main page music. But wouldn't that be an enormous task to make work?
Tutorials are good also. Extremely good.

I'll definately send you something. Although, I'm not sure why I'm writing it here. Let's think about it: you don't know me, so, even if you read this message, and I don't send you something by Friday, you won't remember I promised I'd enter. If I do send you something and I do get selected, well, good for me. I wouldn't have mattered that I wrote something. But now that I have said that, maybe you'll actually remember I said I would enter ( because my text is so brilliantly written...)and then, if I don't send you anything, you'll write my name down on you people to kill ( or maybe just people to hate) list and I would have been better to write nothing at all on the subject.
So, It's like this: I'm more stupid to write I'm going to enter than I'd be if I simply entered without announcing it.
But now that I do realize this, I can simply not post this message and still have the option of not entering at all, but since I already spent time writting this, it would be foolish to discard it simply to avoid having to take time to do a picture.
So now, I come to a dilemma: do I erase this and admit I wasted time or do I post it and then take the chance that I might not draw anything. If I choose the first option, and draw something anyways, I'll have "wasted" even more total time with this Beebo thing. Since I actually think I'll do something, I'd be better to post this.

Alright, I'm not that dumb, I know Randy is a good Flash author, but I think putting half-finished stuff on a website is just cruel. Imagine if someone liked where it was going! They could suffer from the " I wannahavepico2nowdamnit" syndrome and their lives would be ruined. Sad.
Well, you know, expect people to request the completion of these projects. You'll be in a tight spot: if you don't finish these movies, you'll be evil, and if you do, you'll be overworked and bored. Also sad.

And they'd have to send a very embarassing picture of themselves using the stickers in ways they weren't meant to be used...
I know you've (Newgrounds) received a couple of warning letters from different companies telling you to remove some content ( like Ortiz's Robocob tribute), but was Newgrounds ever threatened because a little prick stole a movie from a big website?
Well, in any case, it's better to prevent it from happening than having to deal with it once it's to late.

Every time the new week's best flashes are put into the top 20 list, they are also put into the All time list. I find this mildly annoying because new films suddenly and very quickly get into the top 50, knocking down the old and longstanding flashes from the top 50, and giving them only a week to make it back up to the top (only to be knocked down again).

I have noticed that also. It's been a few weeks now that the 3 or 4 top movie of the top 20 of the week always replace the top 3-4 of the all time list. I remenber when console wars2 came out, it got a crazy score of over 4.2! Before that, movies in the top 50 had score of under 3.9! Now, people seem to either have less taste or getting more generous with their votes.
I think it might be that flashes are getting better and better every week... Not. It seems that, as soon as a movie makes it to the top 50, it is knocked down to a more normal score, but their score is still higher than those of the very good things that where knocked down before, i.e Alien Hominid and Domo-Kun's Angry Smashfest. In my opinion, stuff like this deserves to stay on the top of the list so they can be appreciated by all. Come on, even Heroes of Cybertron isn't on the list anymore.
You are right also about the votes being inflated. A bunch of users with respectalbe voting powers can raise or lower the score ( usually raise) of any new movie they like, but it would take a mighty lot of people to change the score of something like Hentai: Simgirl or Heroes of Cybertron. This king of movie was didn't have crazy scores ( but still on top of the top 50) when they where at the peek of their popularity, so now, a score of 3.75 that was extremely good a year ago won't even get a movie in the top 50.
Another thing this does is make the top 50 easier to access. Come on, Willy Short? Dark Side Switch Campaign? I'd be stupid to say they suck, but they don't deserves a spot in the top 50. If I'd make a movie now, and it would get in the top 50, I'd be very proud of myself, but, maybe a little less.
One good thing it does though, is make Newgrounds more "alive". I remenber, back in the Days, it was a good while before the number1 movie changed! There was like Street life, then Heroes of Cybertron, then Final Task, then Star Wars Gangsta Rap, then Xiao Xiao. From there it just started to rotate faster.

In short: Newer movies get a Higher score than they used to which rotates the top 50 more often, but maybe fills it with less good movies than it should and it Knock Down the Classics.

Your solutions seem decent, more the first one, but I don't know if it would work. Maybe we could try. I think it would be fun to make the top 50 a top 100, since quality Flash has been colected over years, it would be fair to showcase more of them that are now "lost" in the portal dephts.

What do other people think?
We might as well use this half-Dead BBS Post to think about that.

Author should also get experience points for anthing that is submitted and that stays. Well, maybe... You see, as with Blam/Protection points, I'm pretty sure crap authors would submit twice as much shit every day to get points. I, for one wouldn't complain.
Authors though should never get the power to ressurecr crap that has been blammed. If it was blammed, it's for a reason. Authors can always resubmit their work if they feel they have improved their skills enough for their work to stay on the portal.

You can't overwork a Flash, it's purely impossible! The worst thing that could ever happen to anyone who put more time into a Flash is getting a better result. You analogy with logs doesn't work because every piece of Flash is different. I'd compare it more to you having a tree to have to cut down, and hiring two different people to cut it, giving them the choice between many different tools. In the end, it comes down to the person who can use the tools at his disposal in the smartest most effective way.

And I don't know if it's better to make 10 acceptable Flashes in the same time it would take to make one great Flash movie or game. And how much can you actually improve if all you do is tiny little pieces of Flash.

i really don't care much - or ever did - for score - but i will tell you that a good score does make you feel good. A good score makes me feel better than a bad score makes me feel bad. I don't take the score seriously- but because that is what the site *seems* to be about nowadays - I am sure alot of talented artists have had frustrations because of theor hard work being beaten by some tweening and simple graphics.

Well, you saw what Tom wrote, more views are more important than a good score, put it does seem a bit illogical that many people would go and see a movie with a lower score that the top movie of the moment. If you think the portal is getting to score-oriented, what could be done for that? It would seem silly to organize the top 50 by the number of views, or reviews, obviously.
I noticed that movie now have a popularity ranking, and I was wondering what it was based on exactly, I mean, is is the number of views a movie has or the number of views over a certain period of time? If that was the case, organising the portal by popularity instead of score would make more sense than ranking movies by the number of views, but I still think the score system is better, it's not only Ng that functions on scores, but the whole world.

Well, in any case, now that the portal front page is rotating way more frequently and that the daily top 5 is more important, decent movies get the exposure they deserve.
And we where all 13 once, where we that bad? Of course not! I think the range of age for the tard-ass user is much broader than 13-14, and that less that 1% of NG users are completely dumb.

Response to: DRUGFILMS Posted January 31st, 2003 in General

I think games are under-rated mainly because artistc talent is much more impressive to a Flash-stranger than programming.

About Ng roots... well it used to be about violence, but now you say it's about what a 13 years-old wants, but isn't that also violence? Maybe I misunderstood or something, so could you clarify that a bit, what is it that, in your opinion, a 13 year-old wants?

It seems you are pissed that most of the users are young teenagers who crave games titties and violence.
It does make for some repetitive top-Charters, I admit.
Can you suggest any kind of system to deal with this problem? Or to give more importance to games, other than boosting it's score, because we know some people will abuse this and others will simply lower their votes on games to balance it out.
Do you think the portal, or the whole website, should be divided into adult/minors section? Or that some priviledges should be granted to mature users. I think we are kind of on that track with the ratings system, but what keeps a 12 year-old from lying about is age anyway?
Maybe Tom could give us some stats or something as to the average age of the NG user so we can have a better picture of what is going on around here.

Let us not forget that the animation/sound/programming of a Flash is only one half of it, there is the question of originality. That's how All your Base and DBZ in a Nutshell managed to live for so long.

Response to: DRUGFILMS Posted January 31st, 2003 in General

I think there is a factor called "talent" you forgot to mention. Usually, a flash with countless hours put into it will most certainly stay, even have a nice score, but it's talent that makes movies go to the top 50. For Flash, you need either ( or both) artistic and programming skills, a movie with a lot of work put into it, but with little skills will, unfortunatly, not get as much a good score as the author expected.

I don't think games are underated on NG, more people make good movies than good games, that's my opinion. And the top 50 is getting pretty competitive now, more than in the good old days, when street life toped the chart forever. (where is that submision now anyway?) I don't know enough about Flash programming, but my guess is that it's much more complicated to do a kick ass game than a kick ass movie.

Could we please move on with that " games/assassin started Ng thing? This website has evolved into something waaaay cooler than good'ol shotgun man, teletubies funland and club a seal. These where classics, agreed, but that doesn't make them better than today's portal.

You are right though, people should not get discouraged when their movies get blammed, in my opinion, this simply means the author has to improve, that's all. How good do you think Synj and Tom where when they first played around with Flash? I do hope your post has given confidence back to many Flash artists who put hard work into a Flash with a 1.56 score.

- How much more work are you going to have to put into it to finish it?
- How often do you get to work on it?
