Noob problem. Not realizing that a constant on its own will always resort to true. You need to put 'event.keyCode == ' again.

The code still works, but since the shape of the slop changes the player stops against it like it's a wall

Then you simply displace the player.

I want to gear learning toward game programming even though I know you need your basics first. I have my basics down. What's the next step? Thanks for the advice.

When I began working with XNA, I already had some basics with C#. But I pretty much had to learn C# alongside XNA. You don't really focus on the syntax as much as you focus on how it works with XNA (stuff like delegates and other language specifics rarely come up unless that's how you program.) For example, I've noticed that C# really emphasizes the ability to arbritrarily create new classes that can be instantly inserted into your code, whereas in languages like C++, more careful thought/planning is required.

Sometimes you don't even have to create a new file, you can just create a new class outside of the Game1 class in the same file (that's only if you're lazy.)

But most of your learning won't be C#, but about 3D programming. It -can- be complicated stuff, but you have the liberty of having 90% of the math hidden from you. Stuff like dot products and cross products, which you learn in either trig or calculus, are some of the most basic math. It's better to start in 2D first, and most people would say that 2D and 3D are completely different (it is true, you can't apply most 2D math to 3D math.) But it'll help you not only get a starting foundation in basic game design, but how to get started once you dive headfirst into 3D math.

Here's why. With 2D, you can start a game right away. Most of the basic faciltiies are there, loading textures and displaying them, and other stuff like learning how to update your sprites to move on the screen. In 3D, you're already overwhelmed with a camera class, matrices, loading and drawing models, and a bunch of crap that will confuse you at first. You have to learn how to start thinking in the proper mindset in order to work with it instead of focusing on technical details like 'how do I draw a model' or 'how do I make a camera.' My friend and I just copy/paste the technical code and work with what we know best, how to make the actual game.

Response to: Class Hit Det. Mc Inside Mc As3 Posted November 9th, 2011 in Game Development

This is psuedo-code.

List of LArrows
List of RArrows
List of UArrows
List of DArrows

for (i in LArrows)
if (LArrows.hitTest(LReceptor))
trace("hit")

... for the rest of the loops

Then in each arrow class you would have your update code.

Response to: Class Hit Det. Mc Inside Mc As3 Posted November 9th, 2011 in Game Development

This is obviously a case of bad game design. If you have to mix and match different objects from different classes in one class, then you are causing yourself more trouble than needed.

It's better to create a list of objects and then have them in a heirarchy, then check them all in one super class (your main game class.) This way, there are no class conflicts, and you can hittest/update everything all in one fell swoop.

Popularity begets popularity. Problem with this is when people look at profiles, they'll only be hit in the face with the most popular. Never a good sign unless you're a corporation that only cares about money.

Response to: [Request] Watergate Posted November 8th, 2011 in Writing

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I have MSn or AIM or skype (but no mic.)

As for the premise, it's pretty straight forward. It's just a retelling of Watergate. There's nothing else to it. I'm leaving it up to the writer's imagination because quite frankly, the story of Watergate is set in stone. All that needs to be done is to pull the details (research) and to organize it in a manner that could reasonably stand for content (writing.)

It does not have to be a play by play or fact by fact or anything like that. As long as it makes sense and doesn't go off into a tangent it's all good.

[Request] Watergate Posted November 7th, 2011 in Writing

Hi, I'm a game developer (not flash, but that shouldn't matter) looking for a writer. It's basically going to be a retelling of the Watergate Scandal regarding Nixon in a video game format. I would post this in the politics forum but I thought that since you people are writing enthusiasts, it'd be best to ask here.

Here are a few samples of what I've done (I've done and am working on more, but this is all I have on youtube):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2SssziRb oI - A preview of the game so far
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnbdGK1XQ 9c - A quick shooter made for a girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPIUgvQtp 3o - A longer game made for another girl

Note that since it isn't made in flash, it's a much more grueling and disciplined task. I have to approach things from a more mechnical/abstract approach since I don't have any built-in animation tools.

A writer would help alleviate a lot of stress for me because I do not want to research it myself or figure out how to make it best appropriate for video game content. That's why having a writer dedicated to it would make things a lot easier. It could be in screenplay format, or straight up dialogue format (as long as the ideas are consistent.) It does not have to be 100% factual, and you can exaggerate a little (it's a video game, think of The Room.) Some liberties will have to be taken in order to fill in the gaps between historical events (like we don't know the exact conversation in the oval room obviously.)

This is not something for money or fame or sponsorship or anything like that (it's made in XNA, and considering it's an amateur project and about history, it wouldn't appeal to Live gamers.) It's just a hobby and I'm doing it as a possibility for my American government project (you might be doing my homework, but it's not a guarantee.)

If anyone is interested, please post it in this thread or PM me. I can discuss contact info and full details on the game later. Please be dedicated to this project because otherwise, I'd be wasting my time. There is no deadline, no rush or hurry, it's just a casual thing, but I still require consistent communication and effort. I might talk to multiple people so don't assume you're special. Thanks!

Do you even understand that the reforms that are happening are putting more pressure on students? You have lazy slackers who are getting fucked up because they can't do a research paper that seniors 2-4 years ago didn't have to do. Or the fact that 90% of the school body is in some accelerated learning program.

The irony is in programming languages like C#, it's designed in such a way that logic like this is much clearer. When I first picked up game development, all of this was taught to me from the start. And so it makes me laugh that when people program in AS or otherwise, they get trapped in these development problems.

Response to: Anon vs. Mexican Drug Cartels Posted October 30th, 2011 in General

They don't have any power in a technological field anyway. The only power they have is the massive amount of ignorance and viral popularity they get. If 'Anon' wasn't referred to 'Anon' or wasn't made out to be the image they are, they wouldn't be out on the streets with their masks because no one would give a shit.

Response to: Anon vs. Mexican Drug Cartels Posted October 30th, 2011 in General

Even if Anon was organized, it still wouldn't have any real power...

Look at them..what does Anon really do? DDoS attacks (incredibly childish and ineffective), protesting (any group of idiots can put on a few signs and act like a bunch of obnoxious douchebags.) As for acting like wikileaks, I think the fallacy is that people assume Anon has the power to do just as much as Wikileaks if not more, when in reality, the methods are unclear. Any computer nerd could find somebody's information if they wanted, it doesn't have to be Anon.

And the fact that someone got kidnapped proves that Anon is not some 'giant headless/faceless' group of people that is unstoppable. It's about as simple as taking a shotgun and gunning them down, and see how serious Anon really is.

Response to: AS2:platform game jumping Posted October 8th, 2011 in Game Development

Well platforming is such a common game for beginners in Flash that there's tons of tutorials and information on the internet. But learning how to write code in AS2 is a trap because you don't learn good design or programming habits. Learning AS3 off the bat will get you started in a better direction to solve simple problems.

Response to: Gravity and movement booleans Posted September 19th, 2011 in Game Development

Man it's common sense.

If you remove everything you know from tutorials and physics, think about it this way:

Your character needs to accelerate up, stop, then accelerate down.

So you will have your base acceleration at say, 5, because it will decrease as you go faster to your stopping point.

speed -= accel;
accel--;

As accel reaches 0, so will your speed. As accel goes into the negatives, your speed will start to accel back down, and all you need to do is set your accel to 0 once it hits the ground, effectively making a parabola.

Response to: Ass Masters 4: Programmers Needed Posted September 19th, 2011 in Programming

I'm pretty proficient in C# and XNA. And I have an ongoing 3D Tower Defense Game right now (me and another programmer, who is doing the models.) Most of my work is at school, and it's all scattered and incomplete, but if you want to see them, I can show them to you. It'd be interesting to work on a game that's actually has something going for it (starting from scratch is balls to the walls painful.)

Response to: Proper way to fire bullets? Posted August 19th, 2011 in Game Development

There's two options. You can do an event handler so it only fires whenever you press the space bar (do a boolean for this.)

Or you can have a delay between each shot (just keep a timer in your enter frame loop.)
