Still working on shading...
I wanted to do something more but I ended up just adding a simple background to an earlier Halloween submission.
The main playable character in a flash game I am making. Hopefully it will be finished before Halloween.

Light sourcing a sprite is a tough job, because usually the light source changes and the 2d sprite can't (and shouldn't be expected to) update for it.
Looks like you're getting lots of feedback, and that's because the work is already good. Keep it up, I very much look forward to seeing more. ^5
Thanks for the feedback! I'm still having a tough time shading on my "pixel illustrations." I've sort of given up trying to shade pixel art in games (especially ones that are animated) because of the reason you gave.

With a traditional scarecrow character, the storyline wouldn't make much sense :pThere's a median between changing the character to a design of a traditional scarecrow and keeping it the same. If you added a few elements of scarecrow iconography (e.g. maybe the mouth is made up of stitches, maybe the clothing has a few patches sewed on, little things like that) then people might more readily recognise her as a scarecrow.
It's important for a character's design to reflect its personality, but it's also important for it to reflect its species (?). I think it's a problem if people aren't able to look at her and recognise, to some degree, that she is a scarecrow. And I think there are plenty of ways to change the design to fix that that wouldn't impact on the design as it relates to her personality.
But, in the end, it is your design so you do whatever you want with it.
Again, sorry if I sound snobbish and ignorant but I will not be changing her design. I love critiques and do my best to be open to all critiques I receive. Unfortunately, I have no plans to add anything additional to make Tottie appeal to anyone or further reflect her"species." Quite honestly, I cannot imagine her any other way and refuse to add hilarious features like a stitched mouth or a patched dress when it does not suit her at all. I apologize for my refusal to change and hope I have not offended anyone.
Please feel free to offer more critique, though! I am a beginner artist and know that anatomy and color are my weak points. I redid the original graphic to reflect some suggestions I received. I also got rid of the white "artifacts" that were noticeable on the first version.
Thanks!

I hope you understand. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as standoffish. I honestly don't mean to be... I just want to preserve Tottie in her current form.
No problem. I can't wait to see more of your art. I also did a little doodle over to show you how I personally would change the dress to give you an idea of what I was horribly trying to explain in words. This is more or less what I was suggesting:
That looks lovely *o* I can't wait to get home to try fixing it. Thank you!

*o* I did not notice that... Thank you for pointing that out! I'm using this graphic for the title screen of the game so I appreciate any critique to make it better! I'll try fixing the shading tonight and repost a better image.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

Is there anything I can do to make the art more appealing? I'm trying to experiment with line styles.I really like the style and the colours you've chosen. The face is nicely drawn and the expression is cute. The shape of the dress is kind of odd though. I guess is is supposed to be inflated by a breeze or something? It looks too poofed on the left side and the bottom right is kind of lumpy... I hope I'm making sense here.
The second pic, where she is facing sideways is a little awkward too. She is leaning back too far and it looks like either her weight is supported by her hair, which doesn't make much sense, or she is about to fall over. The braid coming out of her head also doesn't line up with the length that is touching the ground also, which looks a little weird. But still, I really like your idea and the way you've illustrated it. Very neat stuff <3
Thank you so much for the feedback!
I'm going to try to fix the dress a bit for the title screen when I get home later tonight :3 With the sprites, I'll try to correct the hair length and see if I can stand her more upright.
Thanks again for your feedback! I'll try my hardest to improve!

She's a scarecrow :p The gameplay of the game I am currently making is based around her hopping.
The shading on the pants is kind of random... Maybe try shading darker toward the belt? I think the picture could benefit from a bigger contrast between the light shading and the dark shading, specifically on the left side where it should be viewed as further away. The anatomy is kind of weird... the hand on the right should probably be a little longer.
Good work! *o* Your skills are amazing!
