I'd like to know, too. Is it too late to submit something?

I am working on a film titled "Incremental Save Giraffe". It will be a condescending little piece about how you should save your file or you deserve whatever outcome befalls your project. It will be heavily driven by the music, since it's going to be a creepy singing giraffe, and at the end I'd like the music to distort and then cut off abruptly and have the words "Corrupt File" blink on the screen. I've started on the design for the giraffe and I plan for it to be Flash animated (unless I get access to Toonboom). Once I get finished with the rough storyboard I'll post it below, but I wanted to generate some interest in the project in case anyone is willing to lend a hand.

The legs look good. I think you should put more bounce in the hips (like this) so that the character's upper body seems more believable. This could be easy if you take the top part and make it into a graphics symbol, and then motion tweening it in the timeline (so you can still preserve the arm swinging motion). Also, try to give the lower arm more of a swing (you can break it apart and make a skeleton out of it using the bone tool, if your version of Flash has that available) Also, the head has a really great expression, but it might look more smooth if it didn't move so dramatically. Also, you might want to make the sun a little slower (just add more frames to the motion tween) so that it looks farther in the background and creates parallax.

I hope that helped. :P

PeterSatera, there is no doubt that Toonboom is 100% than Flash, and if you have the funds then that's what you should go with. Toonboom Animate Pro 2 is extremely expensive, but with a tablet or cintiq it's practically like drawing on paper, and it's gorgeous. The skeleton system is also a lot more animation friendly, since Toonboom was actually made for animators.

However, some studios still continue to use Flash because it's cheaper than buying Toonboom, and some animators do not want to go and train for completely new software. Also, if you are at all interested in interactive animation, Toonboom does not have AS3 (granted, Toonboom exports very nicely as an SWF that you can bring into Flash, so this is hardly even an issue if you're working as a team).

If, like me, you're stuck with using Flash because of cost or availability, there are a lot of extensions available that will (somewhat) improve its workflow. Definitely go with Toonboom if you can, though. I don't know anything about Toonboom Studio in comparison to Animate Pro 2, but it's infinitely cheaper and often goes on sale during the holidays.

You can download the trial versions and try them out for free. They give you the full program, but it renders with a water mark.

Response to: intuitive story based game anyone? Posted February 28th, 2013 in Collaboration

I may be wrong here, but I think most Iphone apps are made with Javascript or HTML5, since Apple doesn't support Flash AS3. But correct me if I'm wrong.

There are also open source programs like Pencil and Synfig for 2D, and Blender for 3D.

If you have the budget, though, Toonboom is the best animation program out there right now.

Seeking As3 Programmer - Animation Posted February 23rd, 2013 in Collaboration

I have a project I would like to pull off, but I don't know the difficulty. I want to make an interactive "game" (if that's what it's called) where someone can animate and record a skeleton rig I made made using Flash.

I would like to be able to publish a skeleton as an SWF that has switchable movie clips and that has a timeline that can be animated and scrubbed through, as if it were in Flash.

For example, if I had a stick figure with 3 different heads, I'd like a button where the user can switch the heads to customize their character. Then, there's a timeline on the bottom where the skeleton can be posed, and the user can select a part of the timeline and pose the character and see it animate, as if they were animating a skeleton in Flash.

I'm not really sure how do-able this sort of project is. I just recently found out it only takes the click of a button to publish an interactive rig, and I guess I was curious if this other stuff was possible. I've seen something like it as a phone app (I think it's called "Dance Lingo"). Anyway, please don't get upset if this really isn't all that easy to do. I don't know much about Flash interactivity, which is why I'm asking.

Never mind, I just needed to nest it and it worked the second time I tried.

Bone tool help Posted February 19th, 2013 in Game Development

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone could help me out.

I'm wanting to combine the use of the movie clip and the shape when using the bone tool (sort of like this http://jeredulevenin.deviantart.com/art/Flash-Lloyd-Irving-D oll-v-2-0-156534171) where you can manipulate the ribbon which is a shape but it's still attached to the symbol for the torso or head.

With all the basic bone tool tutorials, I haven't been able to find the answer to my issue.

Wonder what that's about.

They moved 3 movies back in production and didn't have enough work for everyone, and also Guardians was not as successful as they'd hoped.

Posable character game? Posted February 17th, 2013 in General

Hi, I'm looking for games where characters are controlled with IK movements sort of like the skeleton tool in Flash, where you can drag and pose them. I guess something like the ragdoll, only without the gravity/physics.

I could have sworn I've seen games like this before, but I haven't found any.

I am using CS6. So I'm having this issue where I select all frames, turn on the edit multiple frames and marker range all, and I try to paint pucket an object, but it will only paint the first or last frame of the animation, even though there is little to no movement and there is no gaps in the lines. I could have sworn this worked before in previous versions, but I've been looking around for a solution and only seem to be finding basic Flash videos (and, of course, Adobe forums is down, and has been down for several hours.)

Anyway, if anyone could help me, that would be fantastic, because I'm on a deadline and I really need to find a way to do this coloring quickly, and I can't just go and paint in each individual frame.

Thanks so much! That fixed my problem perfectly. :D

So I've got this scene where a little girl is shining her flashlight and the objects in the scenes are clickable buttons. The shine of the flashlight follows the mouse when it goes up and down the scene. It's a cool effect that I don't want to get rid of, but the shine of the lightbulb makes buttons layered below the flashlight's shine are not clickable. The flashlight's shine is a translucent glow effect. Is there a way to fix this problem, where the shine does not affect the buttons below it? Thanks.

I guess you're right. I'll just go with a simpler concept and get fancy on my own time. Thanks, anyway.

that class is teaching you bad practices. Scenes and frames were made for animators, not programmers. We have 0 use for such.

This is a class for animators. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

use FlashDevelop when programming. The flash IDE was made for animators, not programmers.

you only need one frame on the main timeline.

That should help you along some.

I would normally take your advice, but this is for a class assignment where we are using buttons that transfer the animation to different scenes.

Hey, so I am creating a "choose-your-own-adventure" using buttons that, when clicked, will change the clip to a new scene. (I told you I'm a newbie). They are working fine, no problem, but I was wondering how I might be able to make a button that opens up a movie clip in a scene without changing the scene? For example, I would like to have a book case where, when selected, you can view an excerpt from one of the books, and then return to the book case. I'm trying to figure this out myself, but so far I'm a little lost (I just keep finding tutorials on how to make buttons like I've been making them). Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello, I'm a total scripting idiot, but I really would like to make a "choose your own adventure" game in flash. I was wondering if anyone knew of any preexisting tutorials or scripts that are acceptable to use? Is it okay to use other people's scripts to make games, or is that frowned on? I'm not sure how things like that work. Anyway, I thought maybe if I tried google I might get information, and I ended up finding this bit of madness:

and now in code:
var nodes:Array = [];
for (var i:int = 0; i<xml.nodes.node.length(); i++) {
var newNode:Object = {};
newNode.text = xml.nodes.node[i].question.text();
for (var j:int = 0; j<xml.nodes.node[i].answer.length(); j++) {
newNode["answer"+j] = xml.nodes.node[i].answer[j].text();
newNode["link"+j] = xml.nodes.node[i].answer[j].@link;
}
}

on a site called Kirupa. Now, I don't even know if this is actionscript, or what the dealio is. So, please excuse my idiocy. I'm hoping someone can explain this stuff to me, or link me to something that can. Even if it's some sort of "idiot's guide to actionscript".

Just so you know, I'm pretty familiar with flash as an animation tool, but I am totally new to actionscript, so I understand symbols and libraries, to a point.

Thanks in advance!
