This is the PERFECT update for the Audio Portal I've been waiting on for so long. GET IT IN AND GET IT DONE!
This, really. To put it simply, all these complaints and digs that I'm reading at each other feel totally pointless. People complain, but they really don't have a reason to. This contest is for a bit of fun and that's it really. Sure, there's pressure involved, sometimes it can seem a little unfair, but the fact I took down multiple teams of 2 before I got knocked out only makes me feel better about my musical capabilities.
Not once have I complained either. Having lost a very close friend half way through the competition had completely thrown me off (I was surprised to have even submitted that round, let alone won) and then to lose the majority of my VST's and my project file and still have something to submit somehow? Hell, I'm proud of myself.
It's fair that everyone has their thoughts about how the contest should be run and everyone is of course, going to have dithering opinions from each other. But don't turn it into a slander match for christ sake, keep it civil.
Also shit happens.
Now I'm hungry.

But the way I see it is this: discussing rules and suggestions to be implemented in a contest to make it as fair as possible. It's not new, and not meant to be shot down or raised on a pedestal -- it's just there, with a bit of a remote comparison to making law (kinda has the same principle *in theory*; let's not go down that route either).
To everyone else: I hope that in suggesting what I am suggesting, I'm not being too detached from the needs of other participants and judges.

But I don't think I'm alone in saying that competing as an individual gives different pros and cons to competing as a team -- remember when @PirateCrab called the judges "tight-hearted gits" for putting him against a series of teams?
Heh. They still are. ;)
And that is my useful input for this thread. /end

Pssssttt, you two better be fighting over me for a guest guitar solo <3
Or else I'll melt you with shredding
Reason is excellent if used as a Standalone synth (because let's be honest, Reason is just a HUGE multi-bank-multi-synth-fucking-beast) and works much better when 'rewired' into a DAW. This gives much greater creativity when using out plugins.
On top of that, I second Jacob on Studio One. That's my DAW of choice. Very fluid and keyboard shortcuts are awesome, with a couple of cool built in features.
Every DAW has its benefits, though. For example, Ableton Live (so aptly named) is great for writing electronic pieces or other genres for live performance due to its performance mode that allows triggering. FL is great for quick production. Pull up your old sound, click in a quick beat, loop it, add more, extend it etc. Other's like Studio One, Logic and Pro Tools are much more beneficial for bands due to their straight layout and easy recording tools, but that doesn't mean to say you won't find it workable for MIDI composed work :)

I have a job now and I've been looking into getting a d.a.w but I don't know if I want fl studio. I've been thinking of getting reason because a lot of people have recommend it to me
What I want to know if staying with fl studio would be the smart thing to do as I know how to do everything with it, there isn't really anything I don't understand besides this plugin that needs html knowledge to use.

Of course. People still ask me if they can use my older songs and all I think is "You seriously want to use something that sounds like farts mixed with egg?".
I do feel there are Pro's and Con's that come of it though. Pro's being that even some of your older work that you may think is terrible is still appreciated by others out there. The biggest Con being that you have to represent yourself, so if you release your older song without touching it up and re-working it, that's how people will perceive you.
Maybe come to some form of agreement. Recreate the track possibly with your new techniques intact or simply say you want to be represented by your modern pieces of work, and create a track that is similar but with a new touch.
Unless she's paying money. Money = You agree to everything.
Told you I wouldn't get through! Gave it my best at least! Good luck to both participants, I'm hoping for the best for you both and I'm hoping that you both give it your all and you both have no problems! :)
If you don't give me a microphone, I'll block you.
But seriously, being a musician/artist sucks for earning money. Could definitely do with a microphone to get recording vocals for my projects so I can branch out onto a whole new level!
But seriously, I'll block you.
Welp. @Soundchris and @Hitoriko, that was a cracking song. Congrats, you guys will go through :)
Feels great to be back on my guitar and recording it again! Bloody typical to sort it out the day after the deadline haha!

Fucking deadlines and problems and not enough time. Gratz you guyz win bai.
Ugh sounds like utter devastation. Technical problems do my nut in, I deal with computer problems all day at work anyway!
Anyways I'm back up and running, but I don't have 10 hours, I have about 3. I'm in UK time and I have work in the morning so this is gonna be mega tough. At least I'll be able to upload my track (Or what I have anyway fml)

Hm yeah man i understand you very well ... and its true that those problems always appear when it is becoming important :/ I had (not that heavy, but also very serious) problems in my piano concerto piece. One system crash after another, crashing even while loading the piece and the backups, then the playback wasnt possible anymore and i could not complete the orchestration in time or to check the reverbs etc. In the end i had to upload an unfinished piece ... those fucking thechnical probs really kill all the creativity. For my zelda piece for the HoH i lost 5-7 hours of orchestration in the beginning after a crash and also the last backup was corrupt ...
Musicians just should have to make music only ... not all these technical shitty issues all the time. But i think this wont ever happen :( Go for it man and give your best. We were very excited to meet you in the contest since your tracks always were very cool. Stil 10 hours to compose / mix! Keeping the fingers crossed that it will stil work for you to get it finished!
Well at this rate, I may very well be doing the same. Right now, this is me.

I've been sat here doing this for 3 fucking hours since I've finished work. Hell, I don't even know if I'll be able to even upload anything? WHY DOES THIS SHIT ALWAYS HAPPEN NEAR THE DEADLINE.
It's the project file, not the VST's :/
I think the hard drive is on its way out. Had it for years. I've transferred what I can over to another hard drive but I've started again. No metal this time then, I won't have enough time to do a full track :(
At 10/12/14 04:51 PM, MetalRenard wrote: PirateCrab, are you able to load the project file without loading the VSTs? In REAPER you can do this by checking a little box in the "open project" menu. It's there specifically to combat this issue.
After, you turn them on one at a time to find the issue.
Otherwise it's a save issue, maybe you had a powercut or removed a storage device during a save. In that case, do you not have auto-backup enabled after a certain number of changes? Mine is set to 20.
Well absolutely fucking excellent. My project file has fucking corrupted and the only backup that seems to be working is missing half my instruments and has lost a huge amount of my sequencing work. Class. Absolute class.
You'll normally find the asio drivers will give less latency and will be easier to play with so try both!

What a cracking list! Did always wonder why you didn't include music and artwork in these lists though!
The one you have selected should be correct for sound output. For choice of Sound Driver, you'd want to choose Fast Track ASIO, that's the one that does all your sound processing and handles where the sound travels. Test both to see which one generates your sound for you. I'm not too familiar with FL's DAW but I guarantee it's one or the other.

@step, thanks for your wholehearted review as always!
Genuinely didn't expect to get through this round, I really need to pull out some intense shit now to really make this work. @Camoshark & @Skyewint you are both excellent musicians and it was a pleasure matching up against you.
But now @Soundchris and @Hitokirito ? Christ, this is gonna be painful.
ALSO WHAT'S WITH PUTTING ME UP AGAINST 3 PAIRED MUSICIANS IN A ROW YOU TIGHT HEARTED GITS?
Fuck the scores. I'm gonna go get lost in Diablo 3 for 2 weeks.
The tool you're after is a limiter. You can set this to 0db or -0.1db so it never clips, then increase the input gain gradually until the tracks are level. Then apply the same setting to all your songs.
Be careful not to overdo it however (dependent on style of music you're pursuing) as you can create a very "Ducked" sound when instruments and frequencies start clashing and drown each other out.

Holy shit, did I just score the highest average so far with a METAL track? I am honestly so chuffed, thank you guys! Many thanks to @bosa for actually submitting his track in the end, it was still an awesome track for an unfinished piece! I look forward to facing @camoshark & @skyewint next round! This should be an interesting match :D
