The NL is now set: Dodgers vs. Phils. Hopefully the Phils can continue in the way they have been pitching well, as well as timely hitting. Still, I'd like to see Chase and Ryan contribute a little more. All your analysts/reporters/Joe Schmoes keep saying that they're good players and will get hot. Unfortunately after 4 games vs. the Brewers they really haven't. Perhaps it was just good work by the Brewers pitching that dedicated themselves on taking Chase and Ryan out as threats, perhaps to the detriment of when they faced others in the line-up. Who knows? We'll find out when game 1 of the NLCS rolls around.

As for the AL, both series are at 2-0 and if the trend continues it will be a Red Sox vs. Rays ALCS at tonight's end. The Rays are the real deal and have done quite well against the Red Sox this season when it mattered most. I'll hold my tongue for now as anything can still happen.

Yep, 5 Earned runs through 3 2/3 innings, with the big hit being Shane "the Flyin' Hawai'ian" Victorino's Grand Slam. We went frickin' nuts when we saw that. And of course read CC's lips on the jumbotron as he blurted out "God fucking damnit" as it flew into the stands in left field. We got on him hard when he started giving up hits and walks, especially after he walked Brett Myers after a 9 pitch at-bat. The chants were "C.C. you later" upon his early exit, "overrated," and the big chant was just a simple "C.C. sucks."

Opposing Sabathia was Myers, who pitched quite well. He had his first inning hiccup after walking in the first run of the game with the bases loaded, but stopped the bleeding at 1 after he grabbed a come-backer for the double play. Nothing else came across the plate on his watch until the 7th after a run scored following a sacrifice fly, and then a fielder's choice. So he finished the night with an abbreviated line of 7IP and 2ER. The bullpen was solid in giving up no runs in the 8th, even with 2 on and 2 out for Fielder, who broke his bat on the first pitch he saw as he grounded out. Tonight we saw "Light's out" Lidge as he had a 1-2-3 inning, instead of any nail-biting adventures.

Go head, Yankees. Purchase him for all your young talents and watch him fading in the playoffs. C.C is not a playoff pitcher, enough said.

Well, him being a free agent at the end of the year the Yankees aren't going to be giving up any young talent if they decide to get CC. The only thing they'll be forking over are dollars to him and his agent.

Oh and ouch @ Dempster giving up the 4 run shot.

Hrmss.. predictions, eh?

Cubs in 5
Phils in 4
Angels in 5
Rays in 3

Yeah, no upsets this round I don't think. But I honestly think that the Rays CAN sweep. As for the Phils, well I'm hoping to see some good pitching today and tomorrow. I'm about to leave to go to game 1, and I'll be at game two when CC takes the mound vs. Myers.

That's right bitches, I'll be at games 1 and 2 of this NLDS. Anyone else lucky enough to get postseason tickets?

My favorite part of this whole season is the hype behind the Mets since they got Santana. Sure he did a hell of a job, but he only throws once every 5 days. And even then the bullpen blew half of his starts. Everyone was on the Mets jocks before the season started, picking them to win and whatnot, and only AFTER they got Santana did Beltran pull the whole "Mets are the team to beat thing." Too bad he was wrong. I honestly didn't see them falling apart AGAIN this September, but it sure was fun to watch. I think I'm having crow for dinner, and I'll enjoy it.

How does Minaya still have his job, let alone get an extension?! Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter. The critics will probably pick the Mets to win the East yet again next year, and they will undoubtedly collapse again. This is fun.

HOLY CRAP!

I was at the Phillies game today, and man was that place rockin'. I don't know if you people have ever been to a playoff clinching game, but CBP was louder than it was ever before. I'd say it was louder than any concert I've ever been to. It was incredibly dramatic as the Phils ended it on a bases loaded double play with just 1 out and up by just 1 run. Fittingly enough it was Brad Lidge who closed it out.

Apart from the game making me feel lucky, I had super seats. I was in one of the suites with free booze and food throughout the game, and they even brought out the champagne when the Phillies won it. It pays to know someone, but I know I can't get too used to it. Apart from the free amenities and private restroom I still prefer sitting in the lower level anyway. Here's my ticket, should I frame It? Na....

Unless you're in the Green Bay or Dallas greater areas and are at all a fan of sport, you should be watching the Orioles @ Yankees. Even if you're a Red Sox fan, you have to watch it out of respect.

Thankfully, I've been to the stadium already and could tell people my stories of being there (like watching the Mariners win one 9-7 courtesy of a Griffey Jr. HR). For those of you that haven't been there and your time has passed I could only say that I feel sorry for what you missed out on.

I don't know how the new stadium will fare when it opens, but if it fares anything like the way it's been handled in terms of funding and its impact around the surrounding neighborhoods, it doesn't look like it'll be appreciated as much as the House that Ruth built. That's why I say you should catch atleast some of the game tonight, before you can't anymore.

They should've really taken advantage of when the Cubs lost eight of nine games, but they were just as worse off. I honestly don't think the Brew Crew were the same after they were swept by the Cubs at home.

Perhaps, but that was what? back in July? They did sport a 20-6 record through August. If you're going to point to a certain series that really messed with them I'd go with (nope, not the Phillies sweep) when they were swept at home by the Mets. They've only won 4 games since then and 2 of those wins came against the 2nd worst team in the NL, the Padres.

So I rarely get to see out of market games, whether it be because the Phils are playing at the time, or because they're not aired locally, or whatever. However, I DID get to catch today's game between the Brewers and the Reds on Fox, and the game is just a microcosm of what the Brewers (and Reds for that matter) have done so far this year. They got so close, yet finished with a loss to fall further behind.

First off, C.C. isn't exactly looking like the pitcher that he started out as when he was first sent to Milwaukee. He's given up 4 runs in each of his last two games, and even though only 1 was earned today I think he still could have and should have worked out of that jam in the 6th. Also Francisco Cordero, who has 6 blown saves on the year - 5 of them being to the Brewers - found himself in another sticky situation in the 9th. Giving up a HR to let the lead drop to 1, he somehow wriggled his way out of a bases loaded, 2 out situation with Prince at the plate.

First pitch every time eh? Well if that were the case he'd have like 10 HRs and close to 300 Ks. The pitchers would just get wise and throw him something off the plate or off-speed if he kept swinging for a first pitch fastball.

This does bring up an interesting point that I keep telling my friends and other acquaintances in that Ryan should swing at the first pitch more often, but of course not every time. All too often throughout this season he'd let a cookie of a first pitch just pass him and he'd be down in the count 0-1. Whether or not he thought that he was waiting for a right pitch or letting the pitcher tire out more or god knows what, he wasn't getting the job done when he consistently let the first one go by.

A lot of his at-bats early on in the season those first pitches were the best ones he'd see for that entire plate appearance, and all too often he'd end up fishing for something low and away and striking out. Lately he's been swinging more often at first pitch strikes and doing damage, which both bolsters his confidence at the plate and keeps the pitchers on their toes, and now Ryan is also seeing more first pitch balls, giving him the advantage in the count for the at-bats that he doesn't see first pitch strikes.

I hope so. I'd hate to think that one New York team would be able to savour October Baseball in the final year of their stadium.

Ok, I won't argue the fact that the Mets falling apart at this time after what happened last year is a comedy of errors, at least to me. However, the season is far from over and I'm not ruling them out to still win the division. They both play basically the same teams down the stretch in Was, Atl, and Fla, with the big difference besides location being the fact that the Mets play 4 at home vs. the Cubs. That could be a blessing in disguise for the Mets if the Cubs clinch by the time that series starts and the Cubs could just send out call-ups and rest their starters. Still, the Phillies end their season at home with 6 vs. the Braves and the Nationals, which is the best they could hope for as long as there are no surprises.

As much as it would be odd seeing a 45 year old out-pitch a 23 (I believe) year old, I think what really drives Cole is just personal motivation, much like most athletes. The fact that Moyer is pitching great at his age is something I would think Cole only views as amazing, not so much fuel for his fire.

Yeah, I found that quite odd myself. I mean it's not like the Brewers are completely out of it. The only thing I can think of is that they thought this season is shaping up to look an awful lot like last season, and they want to shake things up and hope for the best. Personally I would think that a shake-up this late in the season could be nothing but detrimental, then again the Brewers can't play much worse than they are now.

I don't know the numbers, but I'm sure the pitchers that follow a teammate that throws a no-no won't do as well as expected due to a let-down factor, but clearly Ted bucked any kind of trend like that. However, I will refer you to my previous statement about the Cubs being the "away" team at Miller Park vs. the Astros.

So yeah, I see now that they're going to play 2 make-up games from the Cubs/Astros series in Miller park, and I find that to be a load of shit. Yes, I understand its close to the end of the season, and yes I know that Texas is getting hit hard by a hurricane, but this just reeks of a rip-off for the Astros and their fanbase.
First off, Milwaukee is way closer to Chicago than Houston, so you've gotta believe that there will be plenty of Cubs fans in the area, if not tons already making a trip up to see a game or two. I don't care what they say or who's batting first, that's a Cubs home-away-from-home game.
Also, I know this isn't exactly priority #1 for most Houston fans what with the hurricane and all, but they just got 2 home games taken away from them. I'd be angry if I had tickets to those games, let alone a season plan. I'm sure the Astros and/or MLB will reimburse them in one way or another, but the bigger issue to me is that this could easily be fixed by scheduling. Especially since Minute Maid is an indoor stadium. I say add a couple more free days at the end of the schedule so something like this doesn't happen again.

Okay so back to the Phils!

I had an eventful day at the park. It started out on a sour note because some of the people that I was supposed to meet (including the one with the tickets) got into a car accident. No worries as all parties weren't hurt too bad, mostly just shook up. The guy who had the tickets was able to pass them off to a friend of his as he and his wife ended up going to the hospital to get a look-over. They're fine now, and they even showed up to attend the game and only missed a few innings. Clearly if it were serious I don't think I would've been in Citizens Bank Park, but Methodist hospital instead to make sure they were OK.

As for the game itself, it was quite decent. This time I saw Cole Hamels on the mound for the Phils against Parra of the Brewers. The Phils got on him early and ergo he was pulled by Yost. J-Roll was a triple short of the cycle, and the home team ended up winning 7-3. Oddly enough Manuel brought in Lidge for the final 3 outs even though it wasn't a save situation, guess he thought he could use the work. They timed their game well too, as the Phils won mere seconds before the Mets lost the first of their double header, so all us scoreboard watchers got to cheer twice in a short span. So yeah they're 2 back of the Brewers with 2 more to play against them tomorrow in a double header, and 2 1/2 back of the Mets.

Oh and congratulations K-Rod, but I still dont like you... *showboater*.

True, that's why I think saves are somewhat of an overrated stat, unless you're perfect/near perfect. K-Rod having tied Thigpen for most saves in a season only really means that his team has put him in a position where he's up only by 1-3 in the 9th a lot of times. Yes, you DO have to finish it off with those last 3 outs, but statistics show your team wins 95% of the time with leads entering the 9th (Proof).
Oddly enough that's a better percentage than K-Rod's save percentage.

Personally I think this says more to the Angels ability to consistently stay in games and get clutch hits in close games, and have quality performances by the men on the mound before K-Rod.

I'm impressed with his bounce back after he was scrutinized so bad in Houston (in all fairness, it was justified scrutiny). He couldn't save a game with Houston in his last season there if he tried.

Lidge has done extremely well, but he probably won't get much recognition for his efforts come season's end, unless he finishes perfectly in saves/opportunities. MVP is out of the question and the Cy is a longshot with C.C. now with the Brewers. The only way I see him getting any hardware is if the Phils make the playoffs AND Lidge stays perfect. Still, as much as he has been perfect in saves, he's still had some adventures out of the bullpen in non-save situations evident by his ERA of around 2.00. Sure, I'd take any pitcher with a 2 ERA anyday, but for a closer to warrant a Cy or something, I'd think he would need an ERA closer to 1 with few or no blown saves.

I'm still thinking Houston just might be the team to make that Wild Card spot. If Philly and Milwaukee just keep beating each other up in this series, it is almost inevitable to see Houston overtake both of them.

The Astros may very well take over the WC spot indeed. I'm looking at the schedules for the 'Stros/Brewers/Phils and the Astros have arguably the easier road.
The Brewers still have 3 more with the Phils and 6 more with the Cubs, who are still a quality team even if they have fallen off a bit. Their other 6 games are against the Reds/Pirates.
After the Phils end their 3 with the Brewers they face only division foes. 6 with the Braves, 3 with the Fish, and 3 with the Nats. All teams who seem to play the Phils tough, despite their records in both season play and season series vs. the Phils.
The Astros have just 3 left vs. the Cubs and have the Fish and Braves from the East, as well as Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, similar to the Brewers.

Interesting note involving all 3 of these teams' schedules: They all end the season on 6 game homestands, and perhaps more for the Astros if they bump the 2 make-up games with the Cubs from hurricane Ike.

Went to the Phils game tonight. They had to win to both gain ground on the idle Mets and their opposition of tonight, the WC leading Brewers. They were victorious by a score of 6-3 behind another decent outing by Jamie Moyer and the bat of Ryan Howard. He hit yet another HR to increase his MLB lead in that category to 43, and he hit a double that went off the top of the wall but stayed in to increase his RBI total to a MLB leading 129. He's getting hot right when he needs to be, so the rest of the squad - especially the bullpen - needs to step up if they plan on making a serious push.

I'll be at the game on Saturday too, so I'll report after that outing as well.

As for the Mets; well, I don't know about another "collapse." I've stated earlier in this thread that the Phils wouldn't win the NL East, even though I'm rooting for them to do just that. I'll gladly eat crow if they do, but I just don't see the Mets falling apart like they did last year. I see them hanging around, and the Phils have a tough upcoming schedule too, with 4 @ Chicago.

patiently waiting on the Mets-Phils series tomorrow night. Moyer should be good, we'll see how Pedro is. either way, i'll be watching.

Moyer wasn't good, Pedro wasn't good, and the Mets bullpen certainly wasn't good. Phils win the first of 2 games by a score of 8-7 after 13 innings. I'll give Moyer a pass on this one because he's had like 14 or so "quality starts" in a row or something, and 'cuz I think he has a Senior Citizens' pass. As for the Mets' bullpen, as that is their Achilles heel, that's the only part of their team that is starting to nudge me away from my previous statement of the Phillies not winning the East. It's not quite moved me off my stance yet, as they still have decent starters. But now with Maine on the DL and an aging Pedro, that rotation strength could also be a liability.

Next up: Santana. He could easily help the Mets reclaim their 1/2 game lead in the East. But I'd like to see him get shelled.

Hank does a lot of shit that George would never do, this being one of them. Just goes to show you why George's Yankees have 6 rings, and Hank's Yankees have 0 and are looking like it might be a while before they challenge for another.

speaks to me that he his defenetly going for C.C Sabathia with a probably 6 year $140-$160 million dollar contract and if you have the starting rotation of Sabathia,Chamberlain,Wang,Pettite,Mussin a my god that beat out all of baseball easily and you can throw in those other starters in the bullpen and then you will have a steady bullpen,so yeah the Yankees will more then likely be highly dangerous next year if he does indeed go for C.C Sabathia.

That's if he does sign him, and also if Sabathia doesn't go all Barry Zito on them (yes, I've resigned to him being a flop, and yes that IS a verb). I have to think that yes, the Yankees would be the frontrunners in going after Sabathia in the offseason, however I could easily see him signing elsewhere too. If things go well in Milwaukee and they somehow scrounge out a WC berth he might stick around to challenge the Cubs for next season.
Also I could see him on a team that's good now, whose future looks brighter and their payroll is low enough to accommodate an Ace like Sabathia... perhaps the Rays? He'd definitely lighten the load from Shields and Kazmir. However, I don't know how much the owner(s) are willing to shell out, but having Sabathia on the mound for their home opener for their new digs in a season or two or however long it'll be would be a nice sight for a club headed in the right direction.

That is pretty good. Let's see, since he didn't hit for power with those numbers, and didn't knock in a lot of RBIs, which leads me to believe he was either a lead-off guy or a bottom of the order guy with no one really to knock in. The fact that he finished 2nd in ROY voting must mean that what he didn't do with his bat he was crazy good with his glove. I'll guess Torii Hunter.

Anywho, did anyone see the finish to the Mets/Astros game last night with the strange play at the plate? Wagner had the bases chucked and Geoff Blum singled to score Mark Loretta and Hunter Pence (which blew another save, big surprise). But Loretta stumbled a bit after the ball was just hit because he wasn't sure whether the ball would be caught and if he needed to tag. Pence knew it wasn't getting caught so he ended up being right behind Loretta, and as the throw came home Ramon Castro dropped the ball as Loretta tackled him. Both scored and the 'Stros won in extras.

I thought it was a strange play because it could've went any number of different ways. Both were safe, but both could've been easily out had the throw been better. Since it was a force situation, Castro could've just stepped on home plate for what would've been the 2nd out of the inning and Pence could've still scored. Or Castro could've recovered the ball fast enough to get Pence with a tag after Loretta scored, had he not tackled him. And who knows, maybe the home plate ump could've called catcher interference on someone and given 2 outs to end the ball game. Either way, I'm happy 'cuz the Mets lost, and now the Phils just need to take care of their own business.

Maybe it's because they want to show to their fan base that they're still trying, even though they're nowhere close to the top of their division and won't even have a shot at the WC. Also, Wolf's contract is up at the end of the year, so he was going to be trade bait to contenders and I guess Astros' GM Ed Wade decided that he wanted to pick up Randy and hope to sign him to a longer deal as they have had a history together. Personally, I think this was done just because Ed Wade is an idiot.

Brett Myers takes the hill tomorrow. I'm prepared for a good ol' fashioned shellacking at the hands of the Mets lineup, but hopefully Myers won't be too terrible.

Indeed. I expect the worst when it comes to Myers anymore. If he goes 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, I call it a great game, whereas others would just call a game where your ERA is 4.50 a "quality start." He hasn't been too good in his stint in the minors either, so I don't know if that was just a confidence builder (which I doubt it was), or more of an effort to try new things and get the kinks out.
Either way, it didn't change my thoughts on how I expect him to pitch. The only thing going for him really is that John Maine is pitching for the Mets and he hasn't been to good as of late either.

Don't you just love it when they themselves become the news?

I used to watch this dynamic duo when they reported the news to me, but it's so much more fun watching them go down in flames. This clears up to me why people love soaps so much, even with the poor acting.

Anywho, feel free to comment and tell me what stupid things your local news anchors have done. Or just put in a stupid Ron Burgundy reference.

He should be starting over Ruiz now in my opinion, he couldn't do too much worse. And although Coste is in a bit of a slump, he could still play every other game if needed, as that's basically what he's doing already.

I dunno, I'm a little skeptical. Without Victorino you have no real CF, and Holliday plays the same position as Burrell...however, that would be an orgasmic trade and powerful lineup, but I'd only be happy if they would be able to re-sign Holliday. If not, then it wouldn't be worth what we'd be giving up.

I get on the Phils a lot for not signing proven players for some cash, but I have a bigger problem getting on them for making/not making trades. Especially since it usually takes a while for one to see if the trade was a good deal or not. It's not immediately black and white like signing someone is (well for the most part).

I personally wouldn't have done this deal either. Holliday and Burrell both playing the same position would be a conflict, and I know Pat couldn't play center for the missing Victorino, and I don't think Holliday could either. Even though Pat's at the end of his contract, and he may not be signed which would leave left for Matt, there's still a hole in the outfield needing to be filled this season. Maybe Holliday could've went to right, but I doubt Werth/Jenkins being decent in CF.

As for Fuentes, I don't see the point in him being acquired. Lidge's contract was just extended 3 more seasons and that's your closer. Perhaps they thought he could've been a set-up man. Losing Happ who has pitched well in his call-up appearances and another young arm in Carrasco is what the Phils could ill afford to do. Right now starting pitching is their achilles heel, and adding Holliday and Fuentes wouldn't solve that problem.

Sounds intriguing to me, but at the same time, I dunno.

It's a novel idea, but I don't really see the point in it. Yes, I will admit that certain teams like the Yankees and maybe the Sawks and Cubbies would think of using this kind of technology to keep their respective P.A. announcers' voices around forever, but I don't think most teams would do this. First off, most fans relate to the voice of their local play-by-play and color commentators on the T.V. or radio moreso than the P.A. guy when they go to the ballgame every so often. Plus, if every team did this, there goes 30 jobs out the window that they could pay someone to do. I wouldn't vote "yes" for this idea.

Anywho, I wish that Jamie Moyer could pitch every game vs. the Marlins.

I think he would've had to.

I was kinda hoping the game would keep going to see what would happen. lol If so, how would they determine homefield during the World Series?

Yeah, I was hoping it would've kept going too, only if to see what would've happened. Would Selig let Francona throw in the towel because he was out of pitchers? Or would he have called another tie? I bet he would've done the latter, and had the homefield advantage factor revert to whichever team had the better record.

Well, anyway, that was a crazy game. Lots of awesome pitching and great defense all around. Glad a stayed up and watched the whole thing. :D Being from Western Massachusetts myself, I'm glad the AL won. :P
Now I'm going to bed. lol

I'm not glad the AL won. It gets boring watch one league win it over and over. Still, it was a good ending I guess, even if I did want to see it go on. I didn't like how Lidge lost it, but oh well. At least it doesn't affect his actual stats of ERA and W/Ls.
