Oh really? I think you're referring to Gorbachev, first of all. Second of all, he sped it up a bit, but the Soviet Union was doomed. Their system couldn't keep up with ours. They strove to beat us in the arms and space race, but eventually they got to much ahead of themselves, and they collapsed inwards.

So no, it wasn't Gorbachev's fault, we kept them on their toes until they couldn't take it anymore. It was a staring contest, and the USSR blinked.

I agree that the Soviet Union was doomed, because freedom of speech was going to come sooner or later.
It was sooner because of Gorbachev.
