3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsI have been playing guitar for three years, but have been really interested in learning to play bass (my friends are considering of starting a jazz band). I would like to mostly do rock like smashing Pumpkins and mainly jazz music. I was wondering if their is any learning curves since I learned guitar first and what I should spend? This is the brand I'm looking at since I don't want to spend a lot on a starter instrument. LINK

While I keep an open mind one cannot help but wonder what if. What if this marvelous universe was the manifestation of intelligent design? What preceded the designer if anything at all? There mere fact that we are living and breathing in a complex world is mind boggling. Who is to say you are even currently conscious? What is consciousness? There are so many more interesting topics and debates than our current one.
Creationism is not a theory, but an hypothesis. It is an idea that someone comes up with. Evolution is a theory because it has enough evidence to show it works. I do not want to get this thread closed, so post religious debates in the God vs. Atheism thread or send me a pm if you want to discuss this more please.

I like to discuss with other people, but making people annoyed or pissed off isn't my goal at the end of the day. I just want to learn how to debate better in one on one conversation.
I have been trying to debate more, but it seems I keep failing to capitalize on weak statements. It usually goes.
Me: God is an unverifiable hypothesis.
Person: So is evolution.
Me: Um, we have evidence for evolution.
Person: Can you observe it?
Me: Micro evolution yes, but macro evolution takes millions of years.
Person: You can't observe it, so I'm right! :D
Me: . . .
I usually feel like there is nothing else I can say at this point. I know we have archeological evidence for macro evolution, but I can't just take a person to a science museum. Is there any advice someone can give me to help strengthen my arguments or strengthen my knowledge?

I was just honestly wondering what everyone's opinion is. I been just really confused lately talking with other people and reading.
I got done with World Politics class today and went up to my professor to talk about Libertarianism when we went off on a completely different discussion. He was at first telling me how he sees me as a nihilist (someone who does not believe anything) and it went to establishing what is right and wrong in society. I asked what he thinks of the left and he says that he finds it be a sort of "mommy" government, that people expect the government to take care of them. I was wondering what your guys' opinion is on this? I just go by the simple definition that liberal means a lot and conservative means a little.

It's not bullshit because everybody does not believe in every god, goddess or deity ever created by men. Christians believe in Jesus Christ and the Old Testament God. Poseidon? He's make believe they say.
Again, everyone is an atheist, some of us just go one god further.
I was in choir for about two years back in high school. The first year was really horrible because my voice dropped like a ton of bricks and I spoke and sang monotone. At the end of the year, my voice started to develop more range. I worked more on my voice the second year; my senior year, and improved a little. My director told me that my problem is my ability to hear pitch correctly and that is why I sang monotone last year. Fast forward today after being away from high school for a year and a half, I miss music. I didn't really join a choir because I had no job and I didn't want my dad to shell out $200 bucks for a music course (I have a part-time job now and in college). I want to develop myself as a singer and a guitarist. I've just been kinda stuck at a plateau and wondering what way to go now. What advice could you guys give me or what do I need to do?
In the words of Penn Jillete, "Everyone is an atheist."
If I told someone that I believed in Poseidon and he created the Earth by using the waves to shape it, everyone would look at me like I'm nuts. What makes your God special and what makes me crazy for saying,"I believe in the god of the sea! He is in books, he must be real!"
Furthermore, why would you praise a God who says:
Rape is okay: Exodus 22:16, Deuteronomy 22:27-29
Kill homosexuals and lesbians: Leviticus 20:13
Kill your neighbor if he works on Sunday: 31:13-15
It is like saying to respect an elder who smacks you with a stick and teaches you to be hateful of women, gays and other races. I think it has become this way because everyone is taught the new testament and rarely speaks of the old testament unless it is about Jonah, Noah, or Adam and Eve.
Why would anyone worship the Judeo-Christian God is baffling.

What I got was from a student ran coffee shop, so I might try that out.

Never have; might give it a try tomorrow since I got college in the morning.
So, I'm going to school full-time and working part-time at a fast food joint. Whenever I work or go to college, I seem tired and unfocused. To wake me up, I usually grab a soda (mainly Code Red or Dr. Pepper). It only carries me so long before I crash again. I figured I'd try black coffee. Let's say it tasted horrible and I never want another cup again.
I want to be healthier, but nothing else really gives me that kick or boost and I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?
I need help. I'm trying to do my assignment for college, but I can't understand it. It's about solstices and equinoxes. You have to divide the traits in the four categories:
+Spring Equinox:
+Summer Solstice: longest day of the year; the noon sun reaches it's highest point; the sun rises due east, but will rise slightly north of due east tomorrow.
+Fall Equinox: sunset occurs at it's farthest point south of due west for the year.
+Winter Solstice: The noontime sun casts the longest shadows; the Sun crosses the meridian 23.5 degrees lower in altitude; than the celestial equator; the Sun has declination 0 degrees today, but will have a negative declination tomorrow.
It says I got three wrong, but I don't know which ones. Can someone help me please?

Mine is totally original.
I'm taking my 2nd semester at Community College right now and it's great. I've been debating on which university I want to attend, but haven't really decided on anything. I always wanted to live in Canada for a few years, so I talked to my professor who went to the University of Toronto. He said be expected to spend 55 hours a week on school work alone; they don't try to educate everyone, they try to make the best better. I know I got the intelligence for it, but I'm a bit lazy. Should I try to get my degree up there or stick to my home state university?
(P.S. I know there are other factors like food, apartment, job, etc. I am just thinking if I want to go up there at all first.)
Italian because it is awesome. Period.
I like Sex-Bob Omb. lol
In all seriousness, I listen to Plumtree a little bit.

The lack of belief in a creator or creators.

I'm still thinking about it, but these are the main ideas I have so far:
-Inform the community that perception on Atheism is twisted and tell others why we came to this conclusion if they ask, not push it on them.
-Not exactly have an hour to bash religion, just to get people together to hang out and talk about what they think and why they became Atheist.
-Talk about separation of church and state and see what we could do to inform our congress about concerns.
-Discuss attacks on this idea (since Glenn Beck's contract has expired, there has been less of this).
These are a few ideas. Opinions or suggestions?
I believe bluegrass+astronauts=WIN!
They would fight until Billy Mays came in and chock them with Oxi Clean.

I don't want to treat it like a religion, I'm looking at this as how homosexuality is portrayed. It is ridiculed by mainstream media and viewed wrongly in public by people. My goal is not to start a church of Atheism and take over the world, I just think I could change a little bit of the perception towards it.
