The manga comments are probably because of the horribly malformed eyes that burn right through his hair, apparently.
You say you know you have horrible proportions, but why don't you fix it? That would make your art much better. It doesn't take very many studies to get proportions to the point where most people would be like "huh, that looks fine" instead of "urgh"
Your color's are also kind of... bad.
I don't know much about color and color theory, but I believe you should stay away from the overly bright tones and primary colors.
