The reason he wouldn't take an amazing work of art dile, is that it is more likely that he be found out, and more likely to be doubted in the first place. Quite a few people just believed that that was his.

I honestly don't know why people would steal art, but my guess is that a good sketch works just as good as a good painting for them.
