Response to: Controlling the main Timeline (AS3) Posted December 17th, 2009 in Game Development

Thanks so much for the help. Really appreciate it. Now I only have one last question before it's mostly all done.

I need to link the buttons in the dropdown menus in the nav bar. But the script doesn't seem to work for that. The dropdown menus are in another movie clip than the first nav bar buttons. I changed the NavBar_mc to dropMenus_mc (that's where the dropdown buttons are) like I should. Also changed the goHome thing and the button instance name. When i preview the movie after doing that, the dropdown menu won't even show up.

stop();
function goHome5(evt:MouseEvent):void {
gotoAndStop(5);
}
dropMenus_mc.demonBtn.addEventListener(M ouseEvent.CLICK, goHome5);

stop();
function goHome6(evt:MouseEvent):void {
gotoAndStop(6);
}
dropMenus_mc.modernBtn.addEventListener(
MouseEvent.CLICK, goHome6);

Using that script on the same frame where all the other scripts are.

Response to: Controlling the main Timeline (AS3) Posted December 16th, 2009 in Game Development

Thank you! That worked great.
Though, now I ran in to another problem. I have 5 buttons in the navigation bar that I want to link, but when I use your script for every button, it says that I can't use the same function twice. How do I solve this? Of course I switched the instance name everytime I used the script so it would use the right button and go to the right frame.

I recently started using AS3, and I'm going to create a website with it. The main navigation bar will be fully made with Flash CS4 and AS3. However, this is not a serious site, only making it to have some fun and learn something new.

Anyway, so here's the problem. I used this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC7BaZCFo rE tutorial to create the navigation bar. As you can see, the navigation bar is in a movieclip. However, the rest of the movie is on the main timeline, outside of all the movieclips.
I want to link from one of those buttons in the navigation bar to frame number 2 on the main timeline. That is, outside of all the movie clips. How do I do that? It seems like whenever I go into the nav bar movie clip and make one of the buttons into a button and apply this script on a frame:

HOME_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOU SE_DOWN, mouseDownHandler);
function mouseDownHandler(event:MouseEvent):void {
gotoAndStop(2);
}

I only get errors.

Help is very appreciated. Simply put, how do I link a button from within a movie clip to the main timeline?

Um. Hi again.

So, how is this going?

Response to: the orange box collab Posted May 3rd, 2008 in Game Development

First of all.
Sorry for being inactive, lots of things in school atm.

What do you need from me? PM me it and I'll get it done before wednesday, then I'll be inactive again I guess.
So many things in school right now.

Well, we could have it after you click watch Half-Life episodes. And put Half-Life parts in the beggining when you press "Play All". We can't really have it in the middle :p

Also, if you have any other Idea for Half-Life or Portal, bring it!

And I kind agree with him, but you do what you want... Would be nice to see the animation after it is done.

Maybe have this after the preloader, and after the animation the menu appears?
Sound isn't very synced <.<

Currently doing that. Here's a preview.

I'm thinking of changing background, that one isn't very good. Also, reason why it ain't very good. 99% of my animations are with sticks only, so I ain't used to drawing good backgrounds and stuffs, so we'll see how this turns out :3

It's good, but fix Gordon's arm.

Also, if anyone has any idea. I would be happy to animate it, as you've seen I'm quite good with sticks, but I can also draw very well.

I just don't like the fact that you can see the camera or whatever that red border is. I'll see is i can do anything to make that border go away.

Okay thanks.
I changed the line "this._visible = false;" to "this._visible = true;". I don't know what I can do other than that. Would be awesome if you could get it working properly.

Response to: Hit Test Problem!! Posted April 10th, 2008 in Game Development

I don't understand. What I want to do is make a ball which you control with the arrow keys, and a labyrinth. When you hit the walls in the labyrinth I want you to gotoAndStop (2) ;p And there will be Game Over text there.

I use this Hit Test script:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (this.hitTest(_root.enemy)) {
gotoAndStop(2);
}
}

And for the moving ball:
onClipEvent (load) {
grav = 1;
speed = 0;
_root.score = 0;
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (this._rotation>0) {
this._rotation -= 4;
}
if (this._rotation<0) {
this._rotation += 4;
}
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (speed>0) {
speed--;
}
if (speed<0) {
speed++;
}
if (grav<0) {
grav++;
}
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
grav++;
this._y += grav;
this._x += speed;
this._rotation += rotate;
rotate = (speed);
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (grav>30) {
grav = 30;
}
if (grav<-30) {
grav = -30;
}
if (speed>30) {
speed = 30;
}
if (speed<-30) {
speed = -30;
}
if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) {
grav -= 3;
}
if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) {
speed -= 2;
}
if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) {
speed += 2;
}
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (this._x<0) {
this._x = 0;
speed = speed-(speed*2);
}
if (this._x>550) {
this._x = 550;
speed = speed-(speed*2);
}
if (this._y<0) {
this._y = 0;
grav = grav-(grav*2);
}
if (this._y>400) {
this._y = 396;
grav = grav-(grav*2.2);
}
}

The ball you control is named "you" and have the instance "you".
The labyrinth is named "enemy" and have the instance "enemy".
Both are movie clips in the same layer.
I can control the ball bit it just goes through the walls, please help me.

I would so love this join this if he could do this.
Stick movies are quite underrated. I LOVE watching some sick Stick animation madness more than anything, I don't care if it's old, as long as it's new moves and stuffz. I really hope we can get this collab going.

Flash + Html Posted April 9th, 2008 in Game Development

So, what I want to do is to make a balloon fly over the screen when you click on a page on a site.
Is this possible?
It's easy to do the balloon, but how should I make it so you can still click on the things on the site while the balloon flies there?
Would be easy if the site was made with Flash, but it's done with HTML.

Meh, tablets sucks. At least I suck with them :P I draw like 10times better without.
I just drew this with a mouse, took like 10mins. It isn't perfect, but I took him right out of my mind.
Weird thing is, I can draw that goo, but I ALWAYS animate with sticks :P
I just don't like animating FB.

Well. I think it sucks. But I can still see that if you improve it, it will become decent. Do the same thing, but draw with the pen instead. Then they it become smoother. Also, make the sticks bigger, you can barely see what they are doing.
When you've done that. Add more frames and really make it smooth! Just make them move liiiittle every frame.
He re's an example. It's not a very good example since I'm currently working on it and the V-Cam isn't set properly. But look at those sticks, then take a good look at your own. See the difference?
Also, try to add effects and stuff. It makes it more interesting to watch.

And btw, some feedback on that movie would be nice from anyone out there. As I said, it's a movie I'm currently working at.

I'm like back....Kinda... I was not really gone but I just didn't feel like like posting.. Anyways, checked back and saw I had 6 pages to read. Wouch! After some reading, a Blue Screen of Death, and more reading I had read it all.

anyways.
To the "Stick are for noobs" poeple: LOL! MWAHAAA! :3 I'll start with saying that many stick movies have made it to the top 50. How noobish is that? I mean, top 50, pffftt. That sucks. Right? <- Sarcasm if you didn't notice.

Stick animating and FB animating is totally different. For stick movies you need to know how to make it look smooth, good and a lot of shit and stuff. And more.. Uh.

For FB animating, you have to be good at drawing (Most people lack this), know how the program works and shitz. Don't have time to write all, it's 03:18 and I gotta watch Cloverfiel before bed >:[

My points are.
1. Both FB and Stick animating is -HARD-. None is more "noobish", if you are going to make a good either stick or FB movie, you gotta be good at making that kind of movie.

2. To the "FB is better than stick" people. BWAHA :3 We don't have master artists here (just some :3), I would rather go with a good, funny and intense stick movie instead of a boring, not to well animated or drawn full body movie.

Meh, am I being like a jerk or an asshole? Or do I just don't make any sense? Well I dunno cuz I've been writing for 7mins, haven't read through the text, it's 03:23 and I'm reeeeally tired :3

Btw, I should send my .fla to Mechasumthing-sumthing, right?
I've seen some people are against stick movies. Can they be co'd? If not, I'm outta here >:[ Stick animating is hard, and I don't like people who thinks it's noobish and don't deserve good stuffz.. Think of the people who can't draw very well. Or try to do a kickass stick movie yourself. It's even hard to come up with the moves in a stick fight. Bleh, Cloverfield, HERE I COME.

Btw, look out for the big wall of text (Is it big? Didn't read through it) up there, it might crush you o.o

Tried inserting it into V-Cam, didn't work.

Here's the movie if you haven't seen it.

I'm thinking of doing a full-body Half-Life thing. Gordon got a new emo haircut, and his holding the crowbar. The crowbar says something like "Gordon, I don't think I wanna work with you now that you have become so.... Emo.."
Gordon replies "I'M NOT EMO, I'M FASHIONCORE! NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME!!!!"
Or something.

I think the portal part is great. I only have one criticism though... I just think you should make the bit with the sign a tiny bit longer, just because you can only just read it in time. Other than that, good shizzle! :)

I'll try to fix it.
Any ideas for a Half-Life part? Should I make another stick movie or do a full-body?
