This is not really a voice acting tip, it's more of a technical issues tip, but whatever..... A better mic might solve the problem, but here's a simpler and more cost-effective solution: dial back the sensitivity of the mic (and take off the +20dB mic boost that Windows usually has on by default) and then shout directly into the mic. Afterwards, amplify the results to the volume you want (I'm assuming you're using a recording proggie like Audacity or Goldwave instead of whatever default recording program you have on your machine).
Also, if you haven't already, check out the the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club, a group of lime-minded people who enjoy screaming into mics. There's also a roster of all its members!

Perhaps you'd like to read the instructions CAREFULLY. Especially the part in CAPITAL LETTERS.
And now I have an excuse to post the link to:
THE NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!!
Without doubleposting. HURRAH!
vashtsakared: Sorry to hear about your troubles with the mic.... Some random suggestions to fix some of that noise (maybe): Is your mic line touching something else that might interfere with the signal (like electrical cables or what not), is your mic close to another object (like the monitor) and may be picking up reflections off of that? Worse comes to the worse you could always use a USB mic, which is quite the beaut. On the otherhand, your profile IS already up here:
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~omahdon/AVA/NGVACroster.htm#vashtsakared
LimblessAvenger: What the love of F--! RAGE! Oh for god's sake, I'm not going to bother any more after this but NO SAMPLES = NO ROSTER PROFILE = NO LOVE. Please get bent sideways and down.
Lucky_design: Hey there, nice job on the lipsynch and I'm happy you decided to use my rewritten lines. :-) In hindsight though, I think the joke drags on a little bit too long (and I'd actually originally written the dialogue to encompass three Smiths to increase the hillarity of the argument). With just two Smiths, it's probably best to stop the Smith's talking after "I am?"-"We are" and then skip directly to the Oracle at the end. It'll make the scene shorter and probably funnier as well. Also, why isn't Smith wearing a suit? He looks like he's wearing a black coat with a black sweater underneath....
Bezo: Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! :-P
Well the thing about celebrity voiceovers is.... They're not actually hired because they bring anything that the kids would appreciate (the supposed target audience for most animation according to US-made animated movies) they're actually brought in to amuse the adults. Since adults are the ones who are going to be dragged into cinemas by their kids to see the latest "animated comedy hit of the year/summer/200X/all-time". So to make sure that adults enjoy the movie, they bring in celebrities who basically act.... Like themselves. So adults will catch all those double-entrendres and references to the actor's filmography which will completely go over the kid's heads. Like John Cleese acting like a flustered high class Englishman. Or Eddie Murphy acting like a loud jackass. Or Bill Murray playing Garfield on the movie because the guy who played Garfield in the animated TV series also played Peter Venkman in the Real Ghostbusters cartoon which was also Bill Murray's role in the real-life version. There's a whole lot of in-joke stuff going on at a whole other level just to keep the adults entertained.
To use another analogy. It's kinda like guest stars on The Simpsons, who don't actually have to do anything funny; just be themselves so the audience can go "That's that guy from that movie/show/musical group/religious cult!". It's enjoying the performance of someone who's in a movie, who knows they're in a movie and knows some of the audience knows they're in a movie. Intertextuality is a fun game!
Of course, the fact they can act as well would help matters considerably! If you're a celebrity who doesn't know how to act.... Well, you can probably swing by Beavis and Butthead. If they still made that show. Which they don't.
For the first time, I shall reply SOONER THAN I HAVE BEEN RECENTLY @_@;;;
Isca: Aw, pfoo. But still, you can moan! Moanage is good! Yes, indeedy! @_@
Hobbes_The_Prince: To my knowledge I've never appeared in any syndicated television animation. Especially one with ADR in America. Because I live in Australia. The commute is terrible, believe you me. :-P And that site looks useful! I'm always afraid to take advice from the big name people though.... They're probably right, but it's a bitter pill to swallow if everything you've done up till now has been done in the "wrong way". O.o
Masquerade_X: Well, it's a shame to hear that. Your profile will remain on the roster until April after which it'll be removed, so if you can somehow get a sample in by that time, it'll be all good. Otherwise, just resubmit your profile with a sampler once you've gotten a mic again.
KagomeHigurashi: I'll have a download and listen to the FLCL dub later. I'm sure it'll be all good, though!
tiro12: Errrrr.... When I said A downloadable audio-file of the voices you can do, or even if you just saying "Hi, my name is _____ and this is my voice!" in the requirements for a voice sample I didn't LITERALLY mean for you to say "Hi, my name is _____ and this is my voice!".... But I guess that sorta counts.... I'll add your profile to the roster later. But still, try for something a little more.... Elaborate, if you can. Since you've recorded at a good sample quality and converted the final file into an mp3, I'm sure that's something you can do!
And now because I haven't done this for the last few pages....
THE NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!!
And now to reply to people. I gotta stop replying to this thread so late. This buildup of messages is gonna kill me. O.o
-Frogs-: Well, yes I suppose I could change my profile to "dark".... Or I could infiltrate the forces of the light and bend them to my will and reign of terror! Fear! And despair! Or I could just be lazy and not bother. Or something. And as for the fireball! Errrrr.... I ate it. Because evil can do that. Eat fireballs. Yanno. Cause evil's hungry for fire. Yeah. And I'm having trouble getting people to adopt "The Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club" as the club name as it is! Any more words in there and the minds of every healthy American male will explode from the strain! And some of the females who actually do browse Newgrounds. Present company of males and females excluded from the head explodeys, of course.
Lucky_design: I've emailed you my finished and highly modified Smith lines. Hopefully they'll work out for you, I just felt a compulsion to change lines. I'm kooky that way. As for co-author credit, well.... It's up to you really! I wouldn't mind having a flash under my profile. That'd be neat. Even though I technically do any work in the actual animation, it's still neat!
Acethedealer: Your link is coming up just fine for me. All you need now is some actual content on there and you're all set! As for how to script.... Try scripting what you feel best shows off the voices you want to go for! I guess.... I dunno. I scripted my own sampler once and nobody said a thing about it. Sorrow. So next time I make a demo I'm going to rip lines out of scripts I've done for flash! It's easier that way, and I've played the roles before, so it's not like I'm doing anything that won't "match up". Cause it's my voice, damnit and I'll be damned if I don't sound like me!
Hobbes_The_Prince: Hahahahaha, thank you! It's nice to be recognised and liked! As opposed to recognised and hated. Cause in that case, I'd have to start thinking of creating a second identity to covertly retreat to in case the heat gets too high and heaty. Those flash fanboys can be really scary, afterall. O.o
Isca: Wow.... You make flash, you star in multiple productions and not just flashwork, AND you don't feel self-conscious about moaning erotically for a flash game. Are you a real girl? *touches you* This is sooooooooo cool. @_@
Bezo: Will add your profile to the roster later. Great job on the variety of samplers and the resume! I just love the accents sampler, with it's subdivision of different regional European accents and stereotypes. Perfect! I could listen to it on infinite repeat all day! And your imitation of Silent Bob is SPOT ON! Why, *I* couldn't tell the difference! XD And nice melodrama there for the emotional samplers. If I weren't such a manly man, and subject matter wasn't cupcakes, I'd be weeping like a hysterical woman right now! But I'm a man. And don't do that sort of thing. Ever. But great job! :-P Nice mood setting music, too! And getting paid to do work with your voice is cool! And this paragraph has far too many exclamation marks! And has too many sentences that start with "and"! .....!
PaRazZItU: No, I expect you to DIE!!!11!1!11 Sorry, I'm a little bit on edge right now. Perhaps I'll feel better after I drink this large mug of double strength Turkish coffee.
KagomeHigurashi: Nice Excel rant! It is quite teh funnee. :-) Very fast speaking too, very nice. O.o Good luck with the Newtype Magazine thing! Sounds like a blast!
grim_studios: Will add your profile to the roster later. Funny skit you have there for your sample, too! :-P
I'd have reccomended you try posting this on the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club thread, but since you're a member yourself, I'm sure you know where it is if you need it. O.o
Considering the number of people who CONTINUE to ignore my imperious rants of reformation to the current roster structure, I fear the only way that SOME people will COMPREHEND what I am saying and penetrate that armoured core that sits atop their shoulders.... Is by spelling out the entire reasoning behind the REQUIREMENT for samplers in alphabetti spaghetti, dusting it with a peculiar blend of herbs, spices, rat poison and weedkiller liquid, and then forcefeeding them the concoction until they understand. Certainly, there is a possibility that they'll die. Painfully, as a matter of fact. But that's a chance we're just going to have to take. Plus, it'll be a good laugh.
I get wordy when I'm mildly ticked off. You should see what happens when I'm ticked off all the way. Or maybe you shouldn't. I use IRONY. And nobody would like to see THAT.
I wonder if I'm enjoying being evil far too much? Eh, whatever.
THE NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!! ..... has been updated. Details on requirement as well as help one can procure to fulfill that requirement available now. Profiles updated, new profiles added (a smaller number this time!) and big fat red N/As everywhere to decrease self-worth and increase self-loathing for not meeting requirements. Interesting ratio to note: out of the currently existing members, 64% out of the females have a sampler, compared to only a measly 38% out of the males. Which goes to show that women are better organised than men. You go, girls!
Renewman: Got your samplers, added them to your profile. You are safe! FOR NOW! @_@
Gamesdisk: Thanks, man! Glad you liked my Stan.
Acethedealer: When you finally get a link to your demo up, resubmit your profile with a link to the demo.
Hobbes_The_Prince: Very nice work! You've definitely got a good range of imitations as well as original characters going for you. Nice! And thanks for understanding the reason for samplers. It feels good to be understood, and not be mistaken for a megalomaniacal despot who wields his powers of updating a roster with much hastiness and terrible fury.
-Frogs- and Elliair: Thank you again for dealing with the general mess of people who don't know how to make a sampler/demo or how to upload stuff. You two are livesavers. I love you both. Let's get nekkid and hawt and hefvee together. I'll bring the poly-unsaturated butter.
*actively ignores Sam_Fisher_Clock and looscannon5 for reasons they damn well better understand otherwise it's ALPHABETTI SPAGHETTI time*
And now, the list of people currently on the roster who will not be on the roster in 3 weeks time if they don't get a sampler link up:

Not sure if you're still looking for a Stan, but if you are:
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~edwyn/AVA/zip/omahdon_stanaud.mp3
I tried emailing you, but it kept bouncing back. Looks like your hotmail inbox is full-up.
If you're looking for voice actors, there's the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!
Okay, from now on, use this particular profile sheet if you need to cut and paste it for aspiring new members waiting to join:
Your Newgrounds Username: (and your real name if you so wish)
Gender: (your REAL gender, not the one you use to lie on the internet about. You know what I'm talking about)
Age Range: (not how old you actually are, but what ages you are able to sound like. backing it up with an actual age would help but is not necessary)
Specialties: (screaming, anime voices, monster voices, talking through a blocked nose while someone beats you with a pipe.... etc.)
Resume URL: (a webpage with details about voiceover work you've done in the past, if you have one)
Example(s) of your voice: (<FONT COLOR=RED>ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY REQUIRED! NO EXCEPTIONS ALLOWED! THAT MEANS YOU!</FONT> A downloadable audio-file of the voices you can do, or even if you just saying "Hi, my name is _____ and this is my voice!")
Ways to contact you: (at the very least, leave an email)
Special Notes: (personal notes about yourself or experience or what have you)
'Cause it makes the requirement pretty clear. And people who continue to ignore it shall be hurt. Bad. Like.... Hella bad. Over the internet. With my mind. OoooooooooOOOOOOOOOOooooooooh..... Anyway.
Isca: Well done! I saw the general casting calls on that production but missed my chance to audition. Bully on me, I guess. :-\ A dime a line doesn't sound like much, but hey! That's more than what most of us have earned for voice acting on Newgrounds! :-P
Astropuff: Screaming like a little girl, eh? Well, this is one I did for another production pitched up just a wee bit:
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~edwyn/AVA/zip/omahdon_girlyscream.mp3
If you wanna use it, go ahead! And yes, being able to scream like a little girl is not exactly something I'm too proud of as a man, but you gotta work with what's given to you.
Gamesdisk: Not sure if you're still looking for a Stan, but if you are:
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~edwyn/AVA/zip/omahdon_stanaud.mp3
I tried emailing you, but it kept bouncing back. Looks like your hotmail inbox is full-up.
KagomeHigurashi: Oh, don't be such a sourpuss, congratulations on getting a paid role too! And submit a singing clip if you wish.... I don't think it'll hurt. On the otherhand, you have a lot of samplers as it is already so maybe you should think about which ones will BEST exemplify your voice?
Lucky_design: Errrrr.... I'll get on it. Not sure what other funny lines I can think of for Smith, but I'll see what I can do....
And for the rest of you posting profiles with no links to examples, or those of you confused about recording examples and getting them online.... Talk to -Frogs-. Don't talk to me. Because I will probably just mock you. Because I'm an evil man. -Frogs- is a nice man. So talk to him. Because you don't want to get help from an evil man. Normally. THE DARK SIDE IS STRONG WITH ME!
Seriously though, geocities sounds like a good idea even though its bandwidth expires quickly. There's a wide variety of places online that offer free webspace (with massive amounts of pop-ups and integrated advertising.... but free, nonetheless!) so use them to your advantage and upload clips there. Later, you might even want to build a resume of stuff you've been in. Who knows? Only YOU can decide!
And as always, the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club Roster! ...... 's link is in my sig. Click on it. Wooha. Yay. I'm tired of typing that out all the time, leave me alone. @_@
If you're looking for voice actors, there's the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!
Lucien: Thanks for the backup, man! I notice you still haven't added your profile to the list though. Add it now! NOOOOOOOOOOW! O.o
KagomeHigurashi: Adding that as another download link to your extended profile! That's.... a lot of downloads.
-Frogs-: Thanks for taking charge of that! From now on you'll be the official "guy who takes care of your sampler uploading unto the internet" problems! Or something. Anyway, I'll be directing people with problems to you (on the roster page), so maybe you should write a FAQ to make things easier on yourself. And yes, having a roster list that actually IS made up of voiceover people would be nice, indeed! And I shall have to think of another curse that is not a hex! Or is that a contradiction?
Shock_Dingo: Veeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice. Glad I didn't have to delete your profile, cause you've got some major evil going on with your voice there. Nice job. Your profile will be added later (fo' real this time)
Isca: Yes, don't forget the roster. Never forget the roster! For the roster is....
Man, that gets tiresome after a while. Anyway, an update on who's going to be culled from the roster.... Anyone with a "None" or "By Request" for the Samplers column of their Quick-Profile need to get something uploaded ASAP. For those with a "See Profile", it all depends if your profile contains movies or links to movies which can be used as a "voice sample". If it doesn't, then you're also gonna get culled by April.
Next update to the roster I'll be making the situation more obvious by typing out the list of people who need to get me a link to their voice sample, as well as marking the offending samplerless/resumeless profiles with a big bold red N/A. Which isn't a completely bad thing to have if it appears under the Resume column, but is a complete ALL KLAXONS SOUNDING RED ALERT RED ALERT if under the Samplers column. I guess I should be kind and actually EMAIL the people who are in the red..... Eh, I'll think about it. @_@
If you're looking for voice actors, there's the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!
Damnit! That's the second time this has happened! Oh well:
NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!
There really should be a "YOUR POST IS THE LATEST POST ON TOP OF THE NEWEST PAGE. WOULD YOU LIKE TO PROCEED: Y/N?" warning or something. O.o
At 3/7/05 01:13 AM, KagomeHigurashi wrote: Question about the age range thing ^^; What if we just couldn't find any good characters to do on our demo that are in the age range we specified?
In that case, don't mention that age and specify a range that's more fitting for your samplers.... Or, say it only if you're absolutely sure you can do it even though it's not part of the sampler. It'd probably help to put an example up, anyway. Remember, a sample is supposed to be something that's designed to show off the widest range of voices your vocal spectrum allows! So having a voice in there of being an old fart would help. This brings up a good point, actually: Don't say you can do a 300 year old when you CAN'T, people! How do you know what a 300 year old sounds like, anyway???
It won't. At least, not immediately.
Okay, here's the deal folks, after looking at the roster list I noticed something very important that was missing in about 75% of the profiles: VOICE SAMPLES. Now, I may be going out on a limb here, but I think when flash producers are looking through a roster of voice actors, looking for a voice actor for their magnificiently animated flash (or maybe not so, I dunno. it takes all kinds): what they really want is to have a LISTEN to people's voices and from there decide if that voice is suitable for their use.
Admittedly, that is a best case scenario and not every producer has the time nor inclination to listen to every voice sampler out there. But it helps, and is much more helpful than SAYING what you can do, because it actually SHOWS what you can do, and that your supposed age range/specialities aren't some blowhard aspirations of a 13 year old who thinks they can do Bugs Bunny, George Bush, the entire cast of The Simpsons and a Scottish leprechaun suffering from an identity-disorder.
So practically, what does this mean? It means get a bloody sampler and upload it somewhere where people can get it, or I ain't adding yew. In fact, I'm going to start deleting people currently on the roster who don't have a sampler! Starting right NOW!
.... Okay, just kidding. I won't do it right now. But the culling WILL start in April. Until then, I'm only going to add profiles that have a sample link that has the voice of the profile maker. So for those of you currently on the roster, get me a link to your sampler ASAP. Same goes for those of you who want to get added to the roster.
Just so that people don't get the wrong idea and that I'm setting these rules to be mean and spiteful..... Well, I am mean and spiteful, but.... The points for the sampler requirement ARE:
(1) It shows that you're capable of doing the voices (or a close facsimile) that you mentioned under the "Age Range" and "Specialities" section of the profile. It'll also show the cleanliness of your sampling rate, how good you are at eliminating background and mouth noises, and also your proficiency at mixing audio (well, the last one is a bonus, really).
(2) It shows that you actually HAVE ready access to a microphone, know how to record, and know how to upload lines somewhere. I don't think producers would want to work with somebody who "Might, maybe have a microphone somewhere.... Probably have to borrow one from someone out of town.... Maybe I can record if somebody shows me how.... Does anybody know how to get the popping and breathing sounds out from my voice?". It's not TOO much to ask that members of a VOICE ACTING CLUB know how to and have the tools to record their voice, is it? :-\
(3) It'll set a STANDARD for the roster and mean that not every Tom, Dick and Harry (or Tommette, Dickette and Harryette) can just waltz into the thread, leave their profile and expect their name to be added to the list. Just a little bit of extra effort on everyone's parts means less work for me to update (cause it'll scare off the aforementioned TD&Hs just leaving a profile) and it'll make it look more sparklingly professional.
Anyway, that's my stance on it, and I'm sticking to it. I'm sorry if it sounds mean and spiteful to some, but I think just this small, REASONABLE restriction to being entered into the roster would help stem this influx of people (who want to join for purposes possibly not related to voice acting) and make the roster more RELEVANT to voice acting. That's all I'm saying.
So! End of April! Get me a link to a sample of your voice! Or you's get deleted/not added.
And now..... *ahem* "A POX ON YOUR FLESH, AMPHIBIOUS CREATURE! I'LL NOT BE OUTDONE YET!" ..... Is that all right, Frogs? O.o
Actually, if you're looking for voice actors you'd be better off posting on the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club thread. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!
Actually, if you're looking for voice actors you'd be better off posting on the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club thread. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!
Damnit! First time I ever got to the top of the page of something and I didn't bother to put a link to the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club Roster (even though it's in my sig and all). Well anyway.... Here it is! For those of you curious to see who's in the NGVAC as it stands now, or for those looking for a voice actor to star in your flash:
THE NEWGROUNDS VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER
This double-post was made with love. Please don't kill the love. Make <3 not H8.
vashtsakared: Haha, thanks! I'm glad somebody noticed that I did the David Attenborough-style narration voice for the NGVAC roster page! And yes, that was indeed me in Xin. I was Legend, the guy in the white suit. Pimpin'.
TripleArrow: Just post whatever details you want updated here and it'll be up in the next update! Hopefully. Just to make sure I get it, however, you'd probably want to email me what you want changed, as well. Makes it easier on me than hunting through all the posts for a random update.
LazyKenny: Actually, just having A sampler would be good enough. Making a GREAT sampler would be a nice touch, but the sheer act of having a demonstration of what voices you can do (whether good, bad or just plain ugly) would be good on its own.
nadownsus: Your profile will be added to the roster, later. It's impressive, though. You're 13, have a resume AND the fortitude to actually put together a sampler instead of just saying you can do certain voices without an ounce of proof? Nicely done, there!
-Frogs-: Lap up the attention while you still can! The time will come when you'll BEG to be reccomended for random projects! Or you'll just have too much on your plate at one time and will be happy to slip out of the limelight to do your own thing. Whichever. And I think you'll be voicing Randoh as a guy only, while Isca as "Yuna" will have the majority of Randoh's lines while he's masquerading as Rina's sister. I think. I dunno, but hearing a guy doing a falsetto to pass himself off as a girl doesn't really work for me.... O.o
ffej_illeniloM: Your profile will be added to the roster, later.
Isca: I want you to moan for ME..... @_@
Masquerade_X: Yes, got the email, and got the latest chapters of Pretty Face that I was missing before. But now I have them all to the current one! YES!
Punk_clock: Your profile will be added to the roster, later.
RLL_BABY: It's not exactly too late to expand your range, you know. While there's a fundamental difference between styles of voiceovers, the ability to act is something that's consistent in all of them. Plus, I see as many humorous/cartoony style flashes around here as I do the more serious ones....
Isca: Wow.... That's a.... lot of roles. O.o I've barely reached over the 40-mark myself, and that was from over a year of auditioning for roles!
TripleArrow: Your profile has been added. And lucky you, you get the kick off the newly updated roster as the newest addition! Is that not EXCITING???
Masquerade_X: Lines done and sent to your email. Which, coincidentally is only available on the roster, it seems.
So here it is, yet again!:
The Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club Roster!!!
I'm starting to think some culling of the list would be in order.
I already posted these links before, but if you're really still having trouble getting people, try posting on the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club thread or go through the roster to handpick people. If they don't come to you, maybe you should go to them.
Masquerade_X: Dibs on Dr. Manabe! DIBS! SHOTGUN! OTHER SOUNDS OF CONFIRMATION! Well, when the project gets going, anyway.
chibi_lila: Yes, it's me! I'm still around, just not as much as I used to be, yanno. Mostly lurking, really. O.o But again, welcome to the NGVAC, where QUALITY SERVISU! .... Isonlyoccasionallyguaranteedandoftenalittledifficulttofinddespitehavingaros
terandall.
Lucky_design: Ah, that'd be me doing Smith. My siblances are all out of whack, though. Dear GOD! Why are my "s"s always so damn loud at lower bitrates? Ergh.
