You're always going to be stuck with ambient noise. What you need is an audio editing proggie like Audacity to help you remove that background noise.

Response to: Voice Acting Club Posted March 23rd, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

Phew. Quiet today. Mostly. Yup. Preeeeeeeeeeeeetty quiet all right. Quiet, that it is.

CHICAGO-lollie: I think the IZFAS just hated me because I was so obviously superior to them all with my superior superiorness that wasn't sucky at all. Yeah. I'm just going to go ahead and believe that. I AM SUPERIOR! BY WHICH I MEAN I AM NOT INFERIOR! SUPERIORITY IS MINE!

Tetsu-kun: As a matter of fact, I've read the manga Tenjo Tengw! Which I feel is far superior to the anime adaptation. The anime feels a little too clean and has a "this is another Shonen action series" feel to it that ruins some of the right down weird and FREAKY sequences in the manga. There's just something a little off-kilter to the manga that the anime totally misses. Like the huge gap between the "ordinary violence" that happens in most other shonen action stuff, and then the really disturbingly gory and uncomfortably painful looking ultra-violence which flips the series from "another fighting series set in a high school" to something a little more sinister. It's a little hard to explain, but the mature edge just isn't there in the anime, I feel. Maybe it's just me.

Elliair: *huddles together wit' j00* Let us warm each other with our bodies. @_@ And you;'re not doing the flash thing about NGVAC no more? Aw. But you can still keep yourself busy with the gathering of Q&A by various members of the board! That's good, right? ^_^ And nobody has to die today.... Even if this thread DOES breach 58 pages! For I am home early and can reply to fewer messages and save my sanity! So stop mocking me. Stop it, I said! @_@;;;; Oooooooooh.... Tips on getting paid? Neat! But..... Those tips look like they require money.... Especially the training part and mixing of professional demo CDs. I mean, I mixed my own professional demo CD, I just recorded it in a professional studio setup. But still.... More tips I have to keep in mind! I should compile these, too....

rickstertherockstar: Are you saying the IZFAS messageboard did not accept me because I am inferior? NONSENSE! FOR I AM SUPERIOR, WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF INFERIOR! HA! HAHAHAHAHA! Haaaaaaaaa.... Right.

KagomeHigurashi: I get the feeling that that chimps guy just got banned from the NG forums? Did you get that ban on him, or was he banned for something unrelated? O.o Man, that chimps guy seems to have crawled under everyone's skin in this club, eh? XD

Hobbes_The_Prince: Hahaha, yeah, it's kinda weird to think that some of the best "original voices" out there were originally bad impressions of celebrities: given their own life with the passing of seasons and the growings of paycheques. Awesomeness. :-P You're a regular repositoire of voice acting trivia, aren't you? O.o You too, D-Mac_Double!

Everyone in CT-T: The Trailer: Good job on that people! It's nice to see projects with a whole lot of NGVAC people in it. And weird. But also cool! That was quite the funny. :-P And yeah, I was supposed to do lines in this movie too, but apparently the director wanted the lines NOW now when he emailed me.... Just when I had to go into university. Ah well.

Everyone in Akai Yume 2: Hey, that was very nice work there! Kudos must go to Lucien, KagomeHigurashi and Isca. I think everybody did fine for their speaking parts, but.... there.... were.... strange.... long.... pauses.... between.... lines.... while.... waiting.... for.... lips.... to.... finish.... moving.... I think something went horribly wrong with the process, there. The timing of the movie goes completely out of the window, thanks to that, as does most of the dramatic oomph. And I kinda sound..... Not completely suck in this! I'm not entirely sure if my delivery was believable (I've been told my "older and gravelly" voice sucks ass), but I think my voice somewhat matched up with image. For once. Phew.

And now.... More questions!

1. How long have you been voice acting?
Haven't I answered this question before? And not too long ago? because KagomeHigurashi knew the answer? Oh well. I started late '99, early 2000, so that's about 5 years by this current date.

2. What was your first role?
Seifer in a Final Fantasy 8 flash adaptation of the game's complete story. Didn't get far, but it did get a prologue and the first chapter done, as well as various clips done for fun. My first flash animation role would be Black Mage for the 8-Bit Theater series, though.

3. Do your family/friends know you voice act?
A couple, not all. I'm a bit embarassed by it, really. Sorta like coming out of the closet.... Only about voice acting!

Let's say: You're auditioning for a professional voice acting the role. The role is [insert whatever role here]. You're meeting with the Producer and Director. What are your current feelings? What are you current thoughts? How will you go about your audition? Anything else you want to add?

Ack. This question is too long and about a hypothetical I am unlikely ever to encounter because I'd never be able to find an open auditions process here in Adelaide! ;_; But erm.... I guess I'd feel nervous, especially if it was possibly my first role. I'd try to do as many warm-ups as I could beforehand so I don't freeze up and choke like last time. Avoid getting a cold would be great, too. I'd hope the warm-ups will help calm me down enough to read my lines without jitters and that I'd be able to stand at the mic and not feel like I'd collapse at any moment from sheer nerves.

In the end, I just hope it'll go well and that I don't screw up my chance at that. I'd probably be crushed if I don't get chosen, even if I'm intellectually aware that I'm probably one of hundreds of applicants and there can only be one in the end. If I fail the auditions, I'll just have to get up there and try again and again until I succeed.... Ideally. Most likely I'll just sink into a depressed funk that I'll be unable to shake off.

And now the second (and certainly not DOUBLE post, nosiree!) with ze questionaire things. That I fill out because I want to look cool and be an individual. Just like everybody else!

At 3/21/05 05:50 PM, Hobbes_The_Prince wrote:
I was just wondering a few things from some of you:

1. I'm sure alot of you had at least one harsh person (probably having a bad day and took it out on you) that didn't like the character you portrayed ... do you think it's good practice to let it roll off your back, or to speak up in defense of what you believe the character should sound like?

Sadly, I've often let those kinds of raw deals get to me and cause me to write emails of questionable politeness to the people who wrote said reviews. Things tend to get heated after that. Usually though, I end up sticking to my guns, and they end up disliking me even more for not listening to their advice. And we both think the other is an ass. So,was the argument really worth it? Eh.

2. This is my favourite ... are there any roles that you just saw the finished work and went, "Ugh ... what the heck ... ????" You don't have to name names, unless you want to be cruel.

Hmmmmm.... To be honest: No. At least.... Not yet. I've been pretty careful when it comes to auditioning for stuff.... Or maybe I've just been lucky and gotten to work on productions that come out pretty fine. Or maybe I just don't bother to list the bad stuff on my resume and conveniently forget that I ever tried out for that production (I tend to unlist the productions which just email me out of the blue and tell me to do a couple of lines.... Which I do. And then never hear from them again). Then again, there are plenty of times when I thought: "My god. I suck so much ass as that guy."

At 3/21/05 06:36 PM, LazyKenny wrote:
What kind of person do you like to VA for? A humorous guy? A dramatic guy? Or something else?

I like anything and everything. I have to admit, humourous roles tend to be more appealing than serious ones.... At least if you're in a humourous role, and the flash sucks, youget to say a couple of funny lines. If it's a serious role, and the flash sucks.... Well, you're just going to look ridiculous. In general however, it's a case of what's available. I mean, it's Newgrounds. You aren't going to expect someone to mount a complete flash adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet or anything like that.

At 3/21/05 10:13 PM, Shock_Dingo wrote: Do any of you have previous/and/or current acting experience? If you do do you have any unique moments, interesting facts, secrets or such to share?

Nope! No previous experience before I started on voice acting 5 years ago. Everything I learned about voice acting, I learned from practice, listening to how the pros did it, and then developing my own style and learning my strengths from that. Errrrr.... unique moments or some other such etc.? Nothing I can think of offhand.... Well, apart from the fact that my left buttock had to be replaced with that of a pig's after an unfortunate accident involving a rampant gas fire.... But that's a story for another time.

Damnit! It's always the Tuesday when I'm stuck in university ALL DAY that people start posting like mad and hence I have to write these megaposts to make up for it. Damn you all! DAMN YOOOU! Reply less often on Tuesdays, you hooliganishtic oafs!

.... You mock my pain. I hate you all. ;_;

CHICAGO-lollie: Ah! It's you! How are you gentleman? All y-- *gets beaten to a pulp for ressurecting that particular joke* Interesting to see you here, anyhow! But that forum's about as friendly as.... as.... Someplace not friendly. I might be biased in my assessment, though.

KagomeHigurashi: Nice job on the Newtype promo! It doth sound de neat. And that image is cute. XD LOVE FOR NGVAC!

Elliair: I'm a kooky sort of guy. And I taste like marshmellow treats. And you love Gir as well! I like you. *rubs your face with my hands* And very nice acting tips.... I'll have to keep them in mind. You learn something new everyday! @_@ You still gonna try to do the whole "compiling of voice acting Q&A" on this thread? There's.... a whole lot of them. Starting around the 30s area, I think. O.o And now I shall go back to writing EllairXIsca yuri lemon fanfics. *goes*

Bezo: Good luck with your movie! Both secret and otherwise. Sounds big. O.o When it comes to scripts, I'd say give the person you have casted the entire script so they can have the context of the scene, not just their lines in limbo. I hate it when I just get lines in limbo. There's more than one way to say the sentence "I am a banana!" you know! Sure, there's the obvious way from Rejected but.... YOU DOTH KNOWETH WHAT I MEAN!

Tetsu-kun: Man, I don't know whether to feel flattered.... Or to feel flattered and hit on. You coming on to me? Cause y'know.... I still got that barrel of baby seal oil somewhere.... Erm. Anyway. The accent? It disappears or surfaces and blares LOUDLY when I need it. I'm assuming you're talking about that "posh, upper class, pureblood" type of tone that I affect sometimes in real life to get better service (hasn't worked.... YET!). And in regards to not liking the American voices versus the Japanese one: See my reply to Lucien.

Hobbes_The_Prince: I have an anime-ish vocal style? I dunno.... I'd like to think I'm a little more flexible than that, but I suppose my timing does tend towards a very.... Anime-feel? I guess? But like Lucien said, I just think of acting as acting. There are different styles you can put on depending upon the situation, but most of all it's about fooling the audience into thinking that the character is speaking: not the actor behind it.

Lucien: What he said. He also said "DUBBING /= VOICE MATCHING". Having a voice in the English dub of a project that's exactly the same as the Japanese one isn't the point. Nor is expecting the delivery of the English actor to be exactly the same as the Japanese one. It's about creating a believable character in the context of another language without completely apeing the original. If I wanted to watch the Japanese language version, then I'd WATCH the Japanese language version and vice-versa.

rickstertherockstar: Sounding good as Gir there, man! Good luck with the IZFAS people. Cause they're *insert details of more, possibly half-imagined, bad experiences with that group here*. And thank you for continuing to post the link to the roster in my absence. :-P

jump3rboi: Signing up early means jacksquat if you don't have a SAMPLER. It also means jacksquat if you're not actively looking for roleslike the other guys here. What, you were thinking the roles would land in your lap just like that? NOT ANY MORE, SUCKA! YEAH! I gotta lay off the half-ebonics.

-Frogs-: Good job on the frontpager! YAY! XD And yes, people should stop talking.... NOW! Now? How about now? Certainly not now? Aw, c'mon.

Isca: Congratulations to you, too! and hope you get in with that whole "I gets paid moneys to do stuff" thing, Isca. Cause moneys is great. I loves moneys. Nice Spring layout, too! I guess should really start thinking about updating mine since it hasnt changed in over 3 years-- OMFG IT'S SAILOR MOON! *hides under desk. traumatised* mommy?

And in other news: Tetsu-kun and Hobbes_The_Prince talk to much, and now must be sentenced to death. BY DEATH!!11!!!!oneoneone!!!11!!! The lesbian talk between Ellair and Isca however, may continue. With my personal supervision. And a large amount of whipped cream and melted chocolate.

Man, this serious talk of monkeys-- I mean: Chimpcartoons thang sounds serious. I'd say, if he wants you on as a partner Hobbes_The_Prince, get a contract like Ellair said. Otherwse, he might bleed you for ideas then leave you high and dry and using those ideas as his own. That'll be pretty sucky. :-\ Then again, he seems to be having other problems which may interfere with the process of production anyway....

As for Peace Maker Kurogane, it's a series based upon the Shinsengumi, the group of anti-revolutionaries who fought against the dissenters who brought about the Meiji era. The Shinsegumi did historically exist, but Rurouni Kenshin and Peace Maker Kurogane romanticised them a bit: portraying them either as cold-blooded killers trying to stem the flow of progress (RK) or a group of vigilantes trying to keep the peace (PMK). Evidentally, the Shinsengumi are a pretty popular group in Japanese lore, with many different manga/anime adaptations of their history. The common link between PMK and RK however, is the fact that Saitoh Hajime remains the coolest character in either show. He is cool, cunning, slightly strange.... and based on a real member of the Shinsengumi! Who actually did change his name and work for the Meiji government as an undercover cop (as shown, with certain embellishments, in the Rurouni Kenshin TV series). There used to be an absolutely awesome site which had details on both the real and fictional histories of Saitoh Hajime but it's been 404'd. That makes me sad. :-( I'd also have reccomended fans of Rurouni Kenshin have a listen to the Jinchuu Arc Radioplay of which I am a part of, but that has also been recently 404'd. Tsk.

AND I AM DONE WITH MEGAPOST 22-03-2005! VICTORY IS MINE!

LazyKenny: Good question! Erm... Practice? Practice a LOT. Go for lots of different types of roles to constantly keep yourself on your toes. It's kinda like exercise, the more you do it, the fitter, more capable and more flexible with physical activities you are. I guess you could read books on how to improve yourself as well.... Not really sure how reccomended this book comes, but I'm currently flipping through "Voice And The Actor" by Cicely Berry. It's quite interesting and provides a number of tips on various fundamentals and relaxation exercises you can do. I have to admit however, I've only read about the first 20 pages, so I can't really say how useful the book actually is. @_@;;;

Tetsu-kun: Good luck with your roles, and thanks for the kind words about my intro on the roster! Might be time to change it now, but.... Eh. People can suffer with my voice a little while longer. :-P

Response to: Voice Acting Club Posted March 21st, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

Ah! Indeed! We appear to have broken the 50 page mark, in which case:

HAPPY 50TH PAGE OF THE NGVAC THREAD, EVERYONE!

May the next 50 pages be just as.... erm.... interesting.

Elliair: Your ideas on getting drunk and engaging in deviant sexual activities intrigues me and I wish to learn more. Preferably in a private setting. With an entire barrel of gerbil lubricant conveniently located next to the pool of baby seal lions.

Tetsu-kun: Your application has been noted and will be added to the roster later. Except for your Special Notes, which I have elected not to include on your roster profile on the basis that "I have no solid idea of what the Special Notes section is for but I'm about 85% sure it's not for notes of that nature". And thus, my word is law. Or something of that nature, anyway. As for the samples you currently have, I think they're good but you should try to expand on them. Like.... construct an entire clip of you talking to yourself in different voices (like for a skit or something); but as a starting point it ain't a bad kajiggers. Plus, the fact that you have any samples at ALL warms the very cockles of my twisted, blackened heart. Now, go forth and audition for stuff! Not that you couldn't before, but.... Yanno. This is a good place to call a homebase and ask for advice and stuff! So.... ask for it and stuff, I guess. O.o

KagomeHigurashi: My favourite japanese phrase is "Hisashiburi da na.... KYODAI!" which means "We meet again.... BROTHER!". I never get an opportunity to use it that often though. Oh, I also like saying random Japanese "cute stuff" like "mugu-mugu" or "wai wai wai" in a deadly monotone to render those cute phrases to something you could say at a funeral. That's FUN.

Hobbes_The_Prince: Ooooooh.... Getting paid to do stuff? Man, I miss out on some of the good, PAID roles out there. ;_; Be sure to get a contract and sign it, ASAP! Preferably one that has a lot of loopholes that work in your favour and allows you to get more royalty money than the original creator ever intended that would crush his faith in humanity and the spirit of collaboration for the rest of his life. Man, I am an evil, heartless SOB.

Also.... Here's the obligatory

THE NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!!

Response to: Voice Acting Club Posted March 20th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

rickstertherockstar: Hahaha, thanks for putting up the roster link for me. :-P And yes, comparing notes and revealing insider secrets as to what makes the PERFECT SET OF LINES would be a nice thang to do, doncha know?

Shock_Dingo: New samples noted and will be updated in your roster profile later. You could have just said you wanted those samples to be added to your profile rather than copy-pasting your entry, but whatever works fine.

Gamedisk: Your sample link still isn't working for me..... I'm starting to think that the link is actually broken, as opposed to Geocities bandwidth expiring for the day. You sure you got your file there and with the same name?

-Frogs- and Isca: Great work on that flash! Funny stuff. :-P You both dun did good, and it's riding on a nicely high score! And not shutting up is good, because it means more posts to the NGVAC thread! YAY! And I'm looking forward to Matrix RPS and Pretty Face ep 1 too.... Though I still haven't received the script for the latter. Or anything at all, for that matter. Hmmm.

rickstertherockstar: Go for it man! And yes, doing multiple different voices in a single production is probably one of the neatest challenges you can present yourself with. As for Gir, knock yourself out! You might receive a friendlier reception than I did in those forums. And by "friendlier", I mean "any reaction at all apart from utter and complete disdain".

Renewman: Who are you? :-) Ha! Just joshing! .... But seriously, who are you again? @_@ I'm joking, I'm joking! Or am I? Anyway, the best way to get more roles is.... Audition for them! Anything and everything! Scour the forums for topics pertaining to voice acting and leap into them headfirst and damn the consequences that follow! And since Newgroundlites still operate on the "first come, first served" basis when it comes to getting help, those who react the quickest probably get the best and biggest roles.

Elliair: I haven't auditioned for anything since February. I need those roles more than you do! GIMME! Oh wait, you're female.... Well.... I can do female voices too! WATCH ME! @_@;;;

LazyKenny: What -Frogs- said. Good advice to all, really: Whisper shouting is LAME. But so is shouting with noticeable distortion. Learn to dial the senstivity down for shouting and up the volume later in post-editing.

Hobbes_The_Prince: I have yet to work up the courage to do my work in front of anybody. Which is why I'm thankful my computer is in a room with a door. Wish I could lock it, though.

kayoto: Those characters look pretty cool! Sorry we couldn't help before.... Though I don't actually remember you posting before.... But if you need voice acting help in the future, I too will offer my services. Which are excellent, I must say. And I say so. Because I'm me, and I'm naturally egotistical about myself! Anyway, good luck with your current animation and hope to see it soon on Newgrounds!

Response to: Voice Acting Club Posted March 20th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

KagomeHigurashi: I don't really know anyhing about a continuation of the flash animation. The series was intended to be a multi-format seires of intertwined narratives, that depended upon the input of the (many) authors/players. And there are a whole lot of characters to try and bring together. It's really up to the creators of the characters when and how they're going to advance the story, so who knows when you're going to play Ai again? As for me, I'm taking the proactive approach and am actually working on mixing another audio part to add to the series. With the permission of the original creators of the characters, of course. Beats trying to create my own character and controlling him.... whose character type will probably have been seen before already anyway. There are a lot of far-too-similar characters running about in that universe now....

D-Mac_Double: Updates to profile noted and will be included in the next roster update.

-CyberPunk-: Yup! That is indeed correct. 30 posts a page, after that it skips unto a new one. I'm not sure if people can change their private forum settings to have more posts per page, but the default is 30.

_Krius_: Good voice, eh? Prove it! XD

-Frogs-: As for me, I'm supposed to be studying for university stuphs. But being the lazy bastich that I am, I'm always hanging around on Newgrounds waiting for the next post. But on the days when I don't hang around, a whole bunch of people post at once, causing my mega-reply to be HUGE-ASSED. It's uncanny.

rickstertherockstar: Yes, tis a fine club, indeed! With a roster! Look! Sparkles! *roster sparkles. then catches on fire* Crap.

Hobbes_The_Prince: I'm still waiting on the pay-off for a couple of lines I did dun. Several months ago, in some cases. Not really auditioning for anything new lately, as well. Newest thing that got finished was the shopkeeper from FFDaycare ep 2. Hmmm.... And according to my resume, the last time I audied for something was over a month ago. That's no good.

Gamesdisk: Noted, and will be updated on the roster later. Your bandwidth seems to have expired though, so I couldn't test the link.

PeRsOn_MaN: Haven't I replied to this question already? You're already on the roster. If you want to update your profile, just post it here and I'll make a note of it for the next update.

KagomeHigurashi: This is why I stay away from voice acting for people with less than 3 movies under their belt, or have a consistent flash score below 3. Rule of 3s, doncha know? Sure that might be me being horrifically elitist, but a guy's gotta have SOME standards..... Yeeeeeeeeeah, and that statement's probably at LEAST partially hypocritical. And yes, having a nice-sounding is indeed totally different from being able to act well. I actually managed to get by with "having a nice voice" for a while when I first began, before I started picking up the tips and tricks to actually act as well. Still learning!

Elliair: What you said! PeRsOn_MaN, you ARE in the roster!

Isca: You're far too kind, Isca. Far too kind. Has the flash with you moaning erotically come up in the Portal yet? @_@ Also.... You can try my method of keeping track of roles: make a new folder each time you get into a production, and have a text file in that folder which tells you what characters you're playing, when you got the role, and the contact details of the people who casted you. I've been using that method for years, and it's quite easy to upkeep. And when you're ready to update your resume, just sort the folders into "Date Modified" and you'll know which are your oldest/newest roles.

Random Stuff: Just so people don't think I'm just lazing around doin' nothing (and because I feel like posting links to stuff I've done) here's Syuuhei's Phone Call, part of the Kazahana Family Mass Battle series, that I mixed and acted in as one of the characters. Tamtu's in this one as well (if ya know him. His name and resume be on the roster too!). This actually came out a month ago but.... It still counts it does! Oh, there's also the Dreamspace Trailer, starring Isca and myself (and uhhhh.... "others"), which is much more recent.

I use the cork trick and reccommend it to anyone as a technique to add to their regular warm-up regimen! Stick the cork between your front teeth and speak sloooooooooowly and over-enounciate everything. I'm not sure how long I do it for, but I think you've done it for long enough after your face starts to feel tired and sore. After that, you'll be able to say your lines with the minimum amount of tongue-tripping; or at least that's what happened with me in my experience. Green apples, hot lemon-honey tea also help clean the palate as well.

That said however, I have to admit I hardly ever warm up as properly as I should. @_@;;;;

01. What is your favorite word?

I like big or complicated sounding words. Exuberance, plaintative, comtemplative. They're so much fun to say! But my all time favourite would have to be.... "megalomaniacal". Add "madman" to that and you'll have my favourite word-pair. You can't have one without the other. XD

02. What is your least favorite word?

Hmmmm.... Can't think of anything.... Misspelled words tick me off, but I don't think that counts. Maybe.... "Quay"? It's not pronounced how it's spellt! What a bad, devious word. Such a naughty.... naughty.... bad word.... So naughty.... Mmmmm....

..... Let's move along.

03. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Listening to movie soundtracks. Makes me think of various scenarios I could write along with that music. The interference comes when I remember what scene the music plays to, so I have to foget THAT first....

04. What turns you off?

My own visage in the mirror. GAH! The horrible sight! TAKE IT AWAY FROM MINE EYES!

05. What is your favorite curse word?

Damnit! No really, I say that all the time. Often in an Agent Smith-like manner.

06. What sound or noise do you love?

The sound of thunder, and rain on the rood, gently lulling you to sleep. Plus, they make pretty good ambience!

07. What sound or noise do you hate?

That small "crack" that comes from popping your knuckles. That sound just makes me feel weak and dizzy, even if there's no physical pain involved.

08. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I have a profession what now? Voice acting, all the way. Preferably paid and also fun.

09. What profession would you not like to attempt?

Anything involving janitorial duties or actual hard work. I don'ts like them hard work.

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

"Welcome back, sir, we've been expecting you. Would you like a cigar and a cup of cocoa before you begin your merciless reign of terror upon the known universe?"

rickstertherockstar: Profile noted, will be added to the roster later. I know I gave my critiques to you online already, but I'll just cut-n-paste them here to show I'm on the ball and try to go through everyone's samplers before adding them to the roster. It's a work ethic thing! I had a listen to your megazips with the impressions and original voices. I thought they were pretty good, though you had mic puffs and volume distortions everywhere. Some impressions were also better than others: I thought your Spongebob was pretty muich dead-on, though you lingered on it a little bit too long in your mega-zip. O.o I think you'll do just fine. :-P

Also, I think your special notes are somewhat superfluous.... Everybody on the roster (who has a sampler, at least) can say exactly what you said there. That section is more for your history (relevant to voice acting), any special restrictions you may have for working in flash, as well as other skills you might be able to contribute to the art of flash animation. Or for rambling on ceaselessly about your past glories like in my profile. I guess I should really define WHAT the Special Notes section is for, now that I think about it....

PeRsOn_MaN and Gamesdisk: Errrrrr.... Your profiles ARE up on the roster: Gamedisk and PeRsOn_MaN. Unless you're asking about updating your profiles, in which case go ahead.

TVs_Slayer: If you're using a Windows machine, turn off that automatic +20dB gain that Windows likes to chuck on (go to your equivalent of the Multimedia panel and to recording settings, uncheck that box). It's useful for when you want to speak at a normal volume in real-time, but since we're working on audio editing here it's really not needed. That should help a bit with the sound distortion. You might also want to think about using dynamics processing to even out the volume of your voice: Effects -> Amplitude -> Dynamics Processing. I'll demonstrate what I mean here.

Acethedealer: Second sampler noted, will be put on the roster later. If I had to guess, you recorded all that in a single go, and so had to switch voices on the fly, right? Because there's this "This is a new voice, but because my throat's used to the previous one it still sounds like the old voice" thang going on. Plus a whole lot of mic puffs and lippy smacky noises. You might want to try recording the voices seperately next time, and then mixing them together, that way you can easily tell if there's enough contrast between all the different voices you did.

Aw RIGHT! First post on a new page! Well, if my post count was right, anyway. In any case:

THE NEWGROUNDS' VOICE ACTING CLUB ROSTER!!!!

Has been updated with more memberage and some updates to profiles (forgot who requested them, but I probably did it. I think). Roster also has details on how to join (for those of you coming to this part of the NGBBS for the first time) is also available in the fresh me-- I mean.... Want to join the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club? section. Huzzah!

You don't even remember what I auditioned for? That hurts even more now. You make me sad. I cry. *emo tear* ;_;

As for searching for the voice actor you want, it might be better to pick randomly and have a listen to the samplers that are available. And then from there judge if they have the kid of vocal quality you want. I doubt every actor on the list has listed ALL the imitations they can do (or are even aware they sound vaguely like Zim or GIR). Or if you're feeling to lazy to listen to the samplers the actors put their HEART AND SOOOOOOOOUL into making for the purpose of showing what they're capable of, you could always just post the request on the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club.

Hmmmmm.... There seems to be a general lack of posting madness today. I'm almost disappointed! Almost. As in "I could be, but I am also secretly relieved that I'm not".

-CyberPunk-: Am not. And don't listen to Elliair.

Elliair: I've been misspelling your name? That's kind of odd, considering that all I've been doing is cut-n-paste your poster name from the window to the left and put it in the message window here. That's.... weird. Perhaps.... You're secretly not you! And some other person whose identity you've assumed by accident in a comedy of mistaken identities that lead to intrigue and murder! Yeah. Anywho, I'll be waiting at the phone, so call me! Someday! I'll set up my tent by the phone now and wait! Even though I'm in-doors and could easily move the phone next to my bed, the tent is PARAMOUNT! And archiving the posts would be a most supremely cool thing for you to do. Might give some insight into our respective histories (that may possibly be boring, longwinded and tacky.... Oh wait, that's just me).

-Frogs-: I am now enlightened to the truth of St. Patty's day. I was aware of the assimilation of pagan holidays into the Christian calender (and that April Fool's Day was originally the new year for the pagans.... Then Christians made fun of them until they made it January 1st like everyone else), but the snake beating thing and what it's meant to represent was a new one on me. I am now a far more enlightened person! heheheheheheheheh.... Snake beating.... Heheheheheheheh....

EVERYBODY ELSE: Happy Belated St. Patrick's Day, seeing that it was yesterday for me, and soon to be yesterday for your folks a day behind! I didn't wear green, but I did get drunk! A bit! Irish Coffee! Only it wasn't coffee, it was Ovaltine. And instead of mixing it with some form of hard liquor, I used Frangelico, a hazelnut liquer. And I didn't even get close to being shitfaced. But I did drink some form of alcohol! That counts, right? Right???

I remember auditioning on the IZFAS forums. Nobody cared. That hurt. A lot. Better luck to other people auditioning, though! You'll probably need it. Phew. Like breaking ice in sub-zero temperatures with a toothpick....

Anyway.... *goes into recording mode* If you're looking for voice actors, there's the Newgrounds' Voice Acting Club. There's also a roster of all its members, if you want to try handpicking your VA people. Hope this helps!

This is not a double-post, this is simply a figment of your overactive imagination. Go to sleeeeeeeep....

On an unrelated note, I'd just like to ask a couple questions to all you lovely VAs here at the VAC: When did you all get introduced to the wonderfulness that is Voice Acting? or How did it interest you? And, do you plan on going professional with Voice Acting some day? I'll post my answer in a bit. ^.^

I thought I'd put this in a seperate reply since I was running out of space in the other one (curse the word limit!).

I started out in late-'99/early-'00 back when I was part of the alt.games.final-fantasy newsgroup. Somebody wanted to start up a flash adaptation of FF8, which basically involved screenshots of the game to voices and music. I thought that sounded pretty cool so I auditioned for the role of Seifer and got in. Listening back on those clips now, they sucked. Horribly. But it got my foot in the door and I was introduced to a whole world of amateur voice acting I never knew existed until then.

There was a whole lot of drama on those old voice acting boards I used to be on that I won't go into.... But needless to say the community kept dying, reforming, dying, and then reforming again under different names. It's stable right now, but that can change any time. Anyway, I decided to get into voice acting for flash stuff last year, after 5 years experience of voicing audio-only material (and the occasional fandub). I have to admit, flash has been a slightly different experience compared to my other work.... Not only in terms of seeing my voices on fully visualised (original) characters and thinking "Is that me? I sound nothing like that character! FARK!", but also in terms of organisation when it comes to roles. As in, the cutthroat nature of the "first come, first served" auditioning process on Newgrounds, which is a highly suspect method of getting the best people possible for the roles. And now I just realised I haven't actually answered the questions been gone on to talk about my history so I'll just redirect my typing to that particular node of information, instead.

I'm interested in voice acting because, to be honest, I think I'm good at it and it's fun to pretend to be somebody else for a while. Years of chipping away at the rough unhewn stone that was my voice has brought out something which I feel is somewhat presentable. I do have panic attacks about my voice. A lot. But I think it might be something I can get into the regular voice biz with. Maybe. I dunno, that still seems like an unattainable dream at the moment. Maybe if I spend another 5 to 6 years training.... Eh. O.o It doesn't help that my only jab at recording professionally (for clips for my commercial demo) went spectacularly badly. Like.... Hella spectacularly badly. And that was about November 2003. I haven't really recovered from that. O.o

At 3/17/05 02:25 AM, Hobbes_The_Prince wrote: Here's something that I thought of.

Have any of you ever done a voice of your own (or so you thought) and someone you know goes, "oh yeah ... that's THAT person!" and you're like ... "uh huh" (crying to self).

Back to the point ... has anyone ever did a voice that was original to you, only to be crushed by it just being an impersonation?

Well, I've been told on occasion that I sound vaguely like Agent Smith for certain roles.... Which is pretty crazy because I'm pretty terrible at imitations in general.... Except apparently for Agent Smith. It can be handy at times, but being told that "DUDE! YOU SOUND JUST LIKE AGENT SMITH!!11!!1!!!" for roles which are distinctively UN-Smith-like is pretty eye-twitchy and depressingly discouraging.

Oooh! Funny story! An incredibly ironic moment was when somebody replied, after having listened to my auditions, that I sounded vaguely like the guy that did Black Mage from 8-Bit Theater. And he didn't know I was the same guy. That was.... weird. Pretty cool, but weird. I'd have been more upset if the voice I used wasn't a base for BM's voice, but since it was: A-OK!

Anyway, just wondering if these replies to various VAing questions are actually going to be compiled and put up somewhere or if they're just going to float around these couple of pages before disappearing altogether? I'd archive them myself but.... Perhaps somebody else should do it. Somebody who isn't me.

Response to: Voice Acting Club Posted March 17th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

Hooboy, this mega-reply thing is gonna kill me some day.

-Frogs-: Ooooh.... It's tough luck when you're stuck in a situation where you sound miles better than the other actors in the clip. But at least you sounded good in that clip! And if you cast me aside as a rival then.... I understand. Really, I do. I'll just.... go over here now. And cry. Cry until my little eyes can cry no more! And then I shall have ice cream and whey! Yay! And yes, for some reason we have become a bunch of hooligans meting out voice acting sampler JUSTICE wherever we may go. How strange.

Hobbes_The_Prince: Yes, I am indeed the coolest. If it weren't for me checking back on all the messages I missed, I might have missed replying to someone! Think of the madness that would have caused! I might not have replied to someone with a caustic and sarcastic response! A TRAGEDY! @_@ And I accept my Oscar on the basis that I deserve it and am full of talent. No, I am not egotistical. At all. I know I'm not egotistical because I think about myself. Constantly. And I have noted that in no way I am egotistical. Nosiree. Now if someone could help deflate my engorged, gargantuan head, that would be most kind.

KagomeHigurashi: Getting involved in FF productions takes auditioning, time, patience and a whole lotta luck. Mostly luck. Lucking out is something that happens to everyone, in different ways. For example, how do you continue to luck out on Anime-style flash roles when I've never been in one? Eh? eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh? As for being "in" the club: I concede your point, however if people want to post their profile they had better well post it with a sampler. And anyway, what's the point of posting a profile if it's not going to be recorded and put up somewhere for easy viewing later? Not much really. So I guess, either post your profile with a sampler.... Or don't post a profile at all. That shouldn't stop people posting in the NGVAC thread in general, however.

Little_Phoenix: So what you're saying is.... I'm a Klingon? Somehow.... I always knew. *eye shimmer* Good luck with your sampler! Getting it mixed professional sounds coo' too. ;_; As for a screen that says you have to have a sampler or something, I know not how this would work. Like.... Some kind of pop-up that occurs when you want to access the NGVAC thread? Good idea, but again: know not how this works!

Shock_Dingo: I like the idea of having a warning in our sigs for samplers, but let's face it: We all post in different parts of the NG forums, not just here, so having a warning like that in a sig in other forums would not quite make sense. While I'm all in favour of confusing the posters of NG, let's not aggraate them too much. They might want to feast on our flesh. And I like my flesh where it is.

Acethedealer: I barely understood your post, but I think whatyou're trying to say is that you're making another sampler.... In which case: feel free to do so and give me a link when you're done! In the meantime, I'll put up your profile on the roster with your current sampler.

PeRsOn_MaN: Again, like Acethedealer, up to you man. If you want to update your sampler or add a new one: mix it, link it and post it. I'll add it to the roster, later. Some people have more than one sampler, so it's all good if you want to add to your profile.

Lucien: Damn you! He used your annoying AZN guy voice fpr FF Daycare 3 instead of mine! Damn yooooooooou! ;_; On the otherhand, I already got the shopkeep from 2, so I guess that was fair.

-NightCrawler-: Good to hear that Sonic Matrixa is still in the works. Hope to see the final product play out soon! And am I getting some sort of "script editor" credit? Just asking since I did that whole.... "Crazy guy rewriting whole sections of the script just to make it sound cooler" thang. That's probably some kind of warning to flash producers out there. If I get my hand on your script, and I think I can make it better.... I'll probably go crazy with the rewrites. Watch out!

Isca: Making up a resume page after geting your first two roles? Sounds like me back when I first started.... I was so proud when I got my first couple of roles! It was body-vibrating-worthy! Plus, I needed a way of keeping track of stuff for reasons I mentioned before. *nods*

Elliair: You're going to be an ACTRESS-actress? Neat! When you become famous, drop a word to producers to hire me as a voiceover guy, all right? I can fly to America! It's only.... over a thousand dollars to get me in! I'm good! Honest! Now I sound like some of those needy people without a sampler. @_@ And yes, direct imitation of old voice = what's the point? I can see situations where having a direct imitation is applicable (like imitating an old beloved character), but being a slave to the previous actor's performance does limit your possible range and new territories you could explore. Like what I did for the voice of Black Mage for the 8-Bit Theater series. I could have sounded like the old guy with his "I think whispering at a barely audible volume makes me creepy and evil" voice, but I decided to swing 180 degrees and went with a voice that I felt REALLY captured his crabby, ticked-off and world-weary personality. Then it was hated by 90% of the audience population. Bah. People suck. :-(

TVs_Slayer: Actually, I think playing emotionless people can sometimes be just as difficult as playing people who are all over the place. You got to keep a tight control of your voice and emotions: keep it intense and making sure it just doesn't sound like "slack guy mumbling into microphone". Or so I think, anyway. Like.... Emotionless.... With PURPOSE!

LazyKenny: Ah, you joined up before having a sampler became a requirement, so it's all good! If you tried to post a profile now without a sampler however, we would have cruxified you. @_@

Bezo: Changes noted, will update when your profile is added to the roster!

First of all, you people post too much. @_@ And now my replies:

Bezo: A USB key for Logic Pro Audio? KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! *falls on knees and shakes fist into the air* Now my knees hurt. And I am sane! Sane as the next human being full of flesh, bones and water! Such a normal human am I, like all other sloshing bags of liquids WHY WON'T THEY STOP SLOSHING I'm okay.

Gamedisk: This is Ellair's suggestion, but if you're having trouble thinking of improving your example clips: try writing a script with character voices you can do, and then play it out. Sorta like a one man show. They can be a series of short skits with different characters too.

KittyGC: .... No, I think I'm going to be calm for this one. Yes. Eeriely calm. KittyGC, you need to have examples of your voice recorded and up online before you can submit a profile to be added to the roster. The reasons for this requirement are explained here. Take your time with your examples and what you think will least embarass you while showing off your range. This club isn't going to disappear any time soon, so take your time and submit it when you're ready. The more care you take with your example, the more it'll show in the final product that will quite possibly impress the pants off people listening to it.

.... And now if you'll excuse me, I have to go and stab random people in the face until they die. *runs out into the street laughing maniacally*

Acethedealer: Dude, calm down! I'm right here! I check through all the pages I miss while I'm away so you don't have to post your profile twice. I'll add your profile to the roster later, but let's be honest here: you're 13 years old and you SOUND like a 13 year old (I checked out your sampler). While I can believe you have the full capacity to try your hand at a variety of roles, your age range is invariably going to be stuck in the kids-to-early-teens ranges at your current age. Just saying you know, for the "anything" age range you got for your profile.

Isca: Ooooh.... Pro commercial sampler? I tried doing that.... It failed pretty miserably thanks to the fact I had a cold, wasn't used to being in the booth, and was nervous as all heck. But anyway, in terms of the script: go ahead and sell fake products! Or look in magazines and newspapers for ads and voice out the text with some rewording (that's what I did). You'll probably want to read through the entire ad, even though most likely you'll only be picking a couple of seconds from each different ad to make up the spectrum of your sampler.

-Frogs-: I'm Australian. I say coloUr. I also say "G'day! Toss another shrimp on the barbie fer ya, mate?" but that's just a joke I wield on the tourists. Sometimes they even fall for it! Head explodeys from using a program sounds not good. Perhaps I should avoid it. I don't like to touch anything too complicated since my complete mental breakdown from C programming in unversity. But I'm fine. Now.

Hobbes_The_Prince: Ah, you'll have days like that. One minute you think you're in the clear.... And then BAM! You owe lines to ten different people and they want it NOW NOW NOW AS IN YESTERDAY! It's nice to be in demand like that, though harrowing.... As for roles I like that I think I sounded best as.... Well, for a lot of my roles that are out there I feel like I didn't QUITE fit the character, for some reason. It's kinda annoying. Being in a series is great because then you can kinda grow into the role, like Legend and Dom for the Xin series, or Black Mage for the 8-Bit Theater series (though some rather highly vocal people say that I sound about as good as a full sheep's bladder being inflated and popped with a pin). Some roles which I think I got right the first time round (which makes me sooooo glad) were the Fridge for the Life 101 pilot and the muffled shopkeeper for Final Fantasy Daycare 2. And dropping the names of productions I've been in feels cool. There are some productions I'm looking forward to when they're released, but I'll wait until they actually ARE released before saying anything about them.

TVs_Slayer: I have to admit, whenever I have to record lines for a certain character, I do all of it in a single go, then cut and paste what I need (or select a section by pressing and holding the left mouse button and going over the part you want, and then File -> Save Selection). It's fairly intuitive after a while, you'll get it with more experimentation.

Isca: A bit late with my commiserations but hope that whatever was bothering you before suffered a massive simultaneous heart attack and aneurysm before being runned over by a bus. That'll brighten up ANYBODY's day! Unless you're related to the person who just died under such tragic cirumstances. Then you'd be sad. But still, what a way to go!

TVs_Slayer: I second every reccomendation for Cool Edit Pro *coughs*andtheeasilyfoundcrack*coughs*. I like it. It is a spiffy set of audio editing tools that makes recording and mixing fun! Like cancer! Only cancer is in fact, not fun at all, so I have used that particular analogy erroneously! How I laugh! Hahahahahaha! I stop now. Your profile has been noted and will be added later. Got a couple of mic puffs in your sampler, but otherwise it's all good.

Bezo:Logic Pro Audio, eh? I gotta check that out *coughs*andfindthecrackforit*coughs*

Little_Phoenix: Nice to hear from you again after such a long period of silence! Remember, submit your samples by the end of March if you want your profile to stay on the roster.... Or just resubmit your profile with a sampler later on if you can't meet the deadline. No biggee.

PeRsOn_MaN: Had I been awake between the hours when you posting your profile followed much later by that of your sampler.... Bad things might have happened. Bad things. Very bad things. But fortunately for all, that didn't happen so everything is A-OK! Your profile will be added later on. Your samples.... Could use a lot of improvement in terms of quality and avoiding mic puffs, not to mention using a format that's a little more compact than wav.... but that can be picked up easily! Later! From someone else! Don't look at me, I'm the jerk who doesn't help anybody and harrasses them endlessly with my off-colour jokes and crass manner!

Hobbes_The_Prince: I make it a point to just put all my roles up and mark which ones are WORK IN PROGRESS, COMPLETED, STALLED, ??? or FRIGGIN' PRODUCER DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY BE DOIN'. It just helps me keep track of what I'm in and who I potentially owe lines to. Nothing quite as embarassing as holding up a production for 6 months because you didn't know you'd been casted and owe lines for the main character ! Not that that's ever happened to me. Or anything. Yeah. O.o Cute cat, btw! And your resume link will be added to your roster profile later.

KagomeHigurashi and Isca: Congratulations to the both of you for getting the roles in the Digimon fandub! Now hopefully it won't crash and burn away into nothing like a lot of dastardly producers of fandub like to do. Cursed dastardly producers!

Shock_Dingo: I'd like to be in a production where I get to do the commentary track on the DVD release with the other production crew afterwards. Those things are so awesome, especially with the livelier voice actors. One day, I hope to be just as cool as them. *eye shimmer* I wanna see commentary tracks for video games. Like.... some kind of unlockable "developers' track" mode. The Pc version of Chronicles of Riddick had an interesting way of visualising the developers notes actually in-game, describing various aspects of the game you probably never knew. I haven't played it, but that sounds like an awesome idea. More games should have that. But thinking about it pragmatically.... Getting into something in which I get PAID would be a dream role for me. XD

grim_studios: I've taken down your profile details and will add them to the roster at the end of the week.

Ellair: Yesssssssss, my pet. Attack! Make sure they understand the penalty for posting a profile without an example of their voice is INSTANT DEATH! All this talk of killing things makes me randy. Let's make out in the river filled with the blood of previous tresspassers. I'm just too romantic.

secret_toad: Xin, eh? There are at least four people on the NGVAC who are part of the cast for Xin.... I am one of them! Coincidence or fate??? Probably just coincidence. That's all I wanted to say.

_TokyoBabylon_: Remember, you've got until the end of March to get a link ready! If you're having trouble looking for viable webhosts, try Ellair's suggestions. There's also a random, possibly helpful section in the roster (link below in ze siggy, or above in the postie) in the sign-up section for more help.

Foxphere: Whoa, whoa! Don't get all bent out of shape there, grandpa! Take a chill pill and [random barely comprehensible 50s slang slang here]. I may have been annoyed, but I handled it with the sarcastic and partially peeved attitude I've become known for (it's a persona!). At least for the first post in that set. The second post was me being a little more serious AFTER Frogs posted the profile template for LimblessAvenger with the requirements clearly stated and he CONTINUED to spread his ignorance with a butter knife. I could have handled it better, admittedly, but I wanted to nip the continued stupidity in the bud before it had a chance to spread. Plus, it was a good excuse to post up the roster link again.

-CyberPunk-: Not having a resume = A-OK. Not having a sampler/demo = DANGER! But since you've got an example up, you're fine!

Ellair: Thank you for understanding my barely contained agony and angst and woe, Ellair. You know my TRUE feelings, deep down inside. Let's get married and have many human wormbabies together. ;_; Also thanks for the continued help with the people seeking it. And you too, Frogs! I'll just be the cranky guy who updates the roster while you play PR and keep me out of sight of the gentle, unwary potentiates who do not know THE TRUE FACE OF EVIL! Or something.
