I'm currently making a sampled library out of ordinary objects (pots, pans, etc.)
Hit me up when you're done with it, I'd be interested in checking it out.
Personally, I see computers as instruments. Thing is, literally anything can be turned into an instrument. I have a Kontakt Library I bought that's a bunch of imbibaphones sampled in various ways. Btw, an imbibaphone is a wine glass with liquid in it. Most people would probably argue cups aren't instruments, but I have a full track out that says otherwise.
Legitimately anything could be called an instrument (or made into one).
Look up sample packs by Freak, Okiru, and Ghosthack. Not bad drum samples (although they're primarily dubstep, so if that's not your thing, sorry).
Don't waste your time looking for free samples online. They're all crap compared to spending the time learning to make your own samples. It's a better investment in the end.
^^This guy has a point (Kinda. Most, but not ALL free sample packs blow). Using samples just as they are can get repetitive and cheesy (as well as not giving you the exact sound you're looking for). Making your own or editing and processing pre-existing samples, then layering them is a GREAT way to get your own sound out of your percussion.

Anyone out there have anything juicy for my ears? I need a new Eargasm beat to listen to.
Well, there's a genre system in the audio portal, so you can actually search all the dubstep on NG by just going here:
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/browse/genre/dubstep
Although if you're looking for recommendations, a track of mine was recently featured on dubstep.net and got some pretty decent feedback.

If the rest of the song does nothing to break the rules, you can remove the vocals and post the song by itself however.
That's what I thought was the case, but I just wanted to be 100% sure. Thanks for the info!
A track of mine on Soundcloud got 55k listens because someone on Tumblr posted it there. I'm pretty sure since there's vocal samples from Spongebob, that'd be against the rules so I can't post it on Newgrounds, but I figured I should double check 'cause I'd really like to have it here too.
I played around with a style I've never touched before (tribal) and added my own dubstep spin on it. I'm unsure if I executed the idea properly. Thoughts?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've got plenty of originals here on both NG and Soundcloud. I've only done like.. three remixes in my two years of music production.
I've started work on an EP! It will consist of dubstep/dnb/ambient remixes of videogame music. I'd absolutely love input from others as to what I should do!
As of now I've completed:
Brinstar Depths (Metroid) - Dubstep
Lavender Town (Pokemon) - Ambient (Not the remix on this NG account, I've redone it)
What I plan on doing:
Song of Healing (Majora's Mask) - Ambient Dubstep
I may or may not try my hand at a Fountain of Dreams (Kirby) remix. Anyway, I'd adore some suggestions and I'm willing to take everything into consideration.

Thanks everybody! I get it now. I already knew to EQ for frequency volume control, but I didn't know compressors would be able to boost that volume further. I always used Fruity Blood Overdrive to boost volumes when possible, but it came with a side effect of somewhat noticeable distortion even when I used it on very low settings. It makes sense that the reverse about compressors would be true, allowing me to use the same volume settings and get the same feedback, but be able to turn down the overall volume afterwards. I'll fool around with this in some older projects of mine that are mixing disasters and see if I can get it all straightened out.
Once again, thanks for the help! :D
I guess I know a hell of a lot less than I thought. I understand a good amount of what's been said so far, but it's fragmented. I thought compression was just used to make kicks and snares punchy. I've never really used compressors. (For the longest time, I thought compressors were bitcrushers and got mad because I couldn't get a bitcrushing effect out of them lol)
What would I use compression for...? What does it do to sound...?
And second, for EQ'ing I just use EQUO. Looked simpler than Parametric EQ 2. What can Parametric EQ 2 do that's different than EQUO?
(Sorry I'm such a noob guys, never really had formal explanations on much of anything. Had to figure almost everything out on my own thus far >.<)

You'll be able to hear/feel what notes are out of the sub's range of being in tune. Automate volume to go along with the "movement" of your main bass synth if you want your sub to flow with your main bass.
The cool thing about sub bass is that its practically the same in everybody's tracks, so check out some proffesional songs in an EQ analyzer and see how they organize they're sub ranges.
I feel dumb asking, but how would I go about doing that? Fruity Filter just has increments shown in bars to give you an idea of where high pass, low pass, band pass, etc all are. It doesn't tell me the hertz.
I recently started making dubstep. I've improved greatly from my first compositions in this genre, and composition-wise, I think I'm pretty good. Even so, it's all still lacking to me. This point was brought up by a reviewer of my latest dubstep track. The bass isn't really that full of bass. My sub-bass is heavily lacking. I have absolutely NO idea how to make it well. I usually just go with the basic sine wave in 3xOSC and go somewhere in either C3 or C4 for the melodies (can't remember which off the top of my head). He mentioned using sidechain compression in the reverse way one would in a house track to make the sub-bass play with the dubstep bass. Even with that, it's not quite as bass-ey as I'd really like. I want to make my music the very best that it can be, and this seems to be a real problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
This track is the one mentioned above, note how the wubs don't really have good bass. There are a few that have a nice bass-ey sound, but it's my solid, not-modulated shit sub-bass which is a prime example of what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance, everybody. If you need the .flp to see what I did, just ask.
I made one, but the Audio Portal is repeatedly telling me it's an invalid MP3. Even though I'm listening to it in WMP right now.
I'm very interested. I can do a variety of styles. Only posting ambient and 8-bit stuff because that's what it looks like you'll need judging by concept art and the previous game you showed.

Good to hear, guys. I'm pumped about this! Thanks for the info!
Also in response to Back-From-Purgatory, agreed. We Came As Romans is fucking awesome.
Okay. So I'm currently throwing together a total remix of To Plant A Seed by We Came As Romans. It will be a different genre (currently it's more leaning towards DnB) and I won't be sampling the song (no vocals, no guitars, drums, nothing from the original piece).
Also,
I plan to use a few guitar samples (but I'll record them myself on my guitar). If I played one of the riffs from the song, and put it in my remix, would it be against the rules on NG to post it here? Or would I be confined to posting it other places?

Yeah, when I first went through this, it took just over a week before it got uploaded if I'm not mistaken. I seriously thought it was rejected. Just be patient!
I'm awe-struck by both of them. They really did a fantastic job the entire competition. They deserve cookies. If I had some, I'd totally give 'em both some.
I'm dreadfully sorry for the delay everyone - but a confirmation of the results is just in!
Yes, these are the final results. DJITD's choice for a winner matched my choice. I tried to write a review, but I couldn't. I couldn't find anything particularly negative about either track to note why I didn't give them perfect scores - so just positives - uneducated ones at that wouldn't really be helpful either.
I put RetromanOMG's track at a 97, and SolusLunes' track at a 95. Both were utterly fantastic, guys. They really were. It was hard picking one over the other. I wish you could both win, you both deserved it, in my opinion.
Congratulations, Retroman, and congratulations Solus. You're both VERY skilled, you made it farther than everybody else.
Here's the thing, gaiz. I can't write. I tried. Every time I do, I come up with nothing. All that comes to my head is what jpbear said. How I don't know what I'm saying, it's uneducated, and just.. bad. I can't really review. I found nearly nothing wrong with either of the two tracks - though the one he favored by score is the one I liked better. Would you all be disappointed if I didn't have a review this round...? :x
I know that's bad - I just can't though. I've tried on a slue of occassions and like i said, jpeabr's 100% accurate comments come to mind, and I freeze up, and my mind goes blank. Thoughts, guys...?

Hoping this is still happening, lol.
Okay, I'm going back in my hole.
OH SHIT. THIS ISN'T OVER YET.
I'll contact DJITD for his reviews asap. Expect news soon.
So I listened to both songs, even though I told myself I wouldn't until the judging period starts on
Monday, and I was going to write my reviews. 'Cause I found myself with a few hours on my hands. But I can't. I'm too afraid. I knew what jpbear said was true, just not to what extent until he said it. I don't know what you guys want me to say, you know what I say hasn't ever really meant much of anything. Would an embarassing attempt of a review even be worth you guys' time reading it, or should I not bother?

I don't think dubstep's that bad. I don't love it, I don't listen every day, but every now and then I could go for a nice healthy dose of it.
But I agree it's completely hit or miss - no middle ground with this genre.
