France withdrew from Vietnam in 1954 i think. The country was divided in two, with the Communist North then attacking the South. France by this point has absolutely nothing to do with Vietnam. JFK decides to send equipment and advisors to South Vietnam and the troops were sent under LBJ. The reason that the US got involved in Vietnam was to prevent the spread of communism not "to sort out France's mess". I know France isn't the most popular counrty in the US right now, but you can't blame them for US involvement and subsequent failure in Vietnam.

Vietnam was in no way UN led, Russia would have vetoed it. Correct me if im wrong but the US were the only external power officially involven in Vietnam.

Utter bollocks. Lenin set up the Communist secret police and ordered them to kill anyone suspected of being opposed to the revolution. His murdering was greatly overshadowed by Stalin, but he set the precedents that allowed for Stalin's reign.

Correct me if i'm wrong here but wasn't the declaration of indepedence modelled upon the French declaration of the rights of man?

Did Finland really base its democracy on the USA or is this an arrogant assumption that the US has the perfect democratic model that all democratic nations follow?

well for a start Bush got less votes than Gore overall in the election.
Additionally, he illegally removed the voting priviliges of black people in Florida who had minor felonies so that they couldn't vote for Gore
Plus Bush received 544 votes from overseas that were highly questionable and should not have been included.

Hold on a second. Please explain how the US gave rise to a murderous, Communist outfit like the Kymer Rouge who sought to overthrow the Cambodian government? That is absurd.

Further, what capitalistic enterprise could we possibly have been defending in Viet Nam? Until recent years, we've NEVER had commercial interests there.

okay. I put that badly. I meant to say it was an attack against communism. it was definitely not a defence of democracy however as the US was supporting Bao Diem who was a dictator.

More rambling:

" the US actually stopped elections from taking place in vietnam because they knew that the communists had overwheming support. in addition they manged to completely f**ki up the Vietnamese plant life, piss off practically all of the south vietnamese villagers and generally fget their asses kicked by a poor nation which, incidentally had no support from Russia."

I hardly know where to start... Communists NEVER had overwhelming support, Viet Nam is lush, beautiful, and productive today, the South Vietnamese STILL love Americans, and we most definitely DID NOT get our asses kicked by either the VC or the NVA (who WERE supplied by Russian ships.

Name ONE battle, campaign, or incident of any military significance WHATSOEVER that they won over US troops. You are sadly misinformed, and need to do some reading yourself. I've been in the country twice and read a ton of literature, history, and opinion. You are WAY off base.

i will admit you've caught me off guard. If you want me to reply youll have to wait till I go home and dig out my A level history notes on Vietnam. Though what I will say is if the war in 'nam was going so well then why did the US pull out, and why did the Vietcong conquer south Vietnam?

Key discussion topics:
1) Was the Vietnam War justified? Why or why not?

No. in their paranoia over communism the US suceeded in destabiloising an already fragile area which indirectly led to the rise of thwe
Khmer rouge in cambodia. it was not in defence of democracy. it was in defence of capitalism. the US actually stopped elections from taking place in vietnam because they knew that the communists had overwheming support. in addition they manged to completely f**ki up the Vietnamese plant life, piss off practically all of the south vietnamese villagers and generally fget their asses kicked by a poor nation which, incidentally had no support from Russia. Thus vietnam was not justified and anyone who thinks it was needs to read up a little history.

2) Will we ever regret our war with the Taliban?

At the moment all it seems to be doing is turning muslim opinion further against the west, and destroying UN mine clearance projectsi think its too early to make judgements though

3) What SHOULD we do with Jane Fonda?

ask her to release another workout video?

2.look back to all the wars USA has been to i.e. Gulf war we recieved no help from other countries

erm what about britain?

i.e. Bill Gates look at the other countries who is more rich than bill gates? I don't know if you can tell me please do he owns at least 50 billion.
the sultan of brunei for one.

even if we did go to holy war we'd still win we got all the best nkes in the world hell we made them USA is the author the creator of nukes.
thats not exactly something to be proud of. i don't thinking nuking a war ravaged country full of the poorest people in the world just to get one man would count as a great victory.
We literly
its spelt literally

the usa has also had a rather stupid policy in the past of replacing democratic socialist regimes with dictatorships (i can't think of anything of the top of my head but if you're that interested I can give examples) and generally messing up things that weren't their business ie Vietnam. in addition to this americans have been funding the terrorist IRA for years.

so your country ain't as great as you say.
