Response to: Tournament of Flash Artists 2011 Posted April 5th, 2011 in Animation

Before we get into the thick of things, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the upcoming Tournament of Flash Artists? I like to keep the contest flexible and open to opinions, so if you see anything that doesn't make sense or would work better, it will all be considered :)

For example, do you think that an "Open Round" judged by the NG community is necessary? Should it be nominations based instead? Or should the top 32 be decided by the judges instead?

I was tossing around the idea of making TOFA T-Shirts to give to all 32 contestants who make it into the contest. Thoughts?

20 days to go! I will post a thread / post describing the rules, deadlines, how to enter, and the theme on April 25th.

(PS We still need $321 to get to our goal of $2,000 for the prize, donations can be made using the button here: http://tofa.munchymedia.com - If you donate I will love you forever and ever. And if I make T-Shirts I will send you one)

I will give you a hint though: It's something to do with replying to a thread.

Photoshopped. The top says Re: Internships? and the subject line below it says Re: Found it (April Fools)

The punchline is that there is no punchline.

Has anyone actually tried to PM this idea to Tom?

I think that was an april fools joke too.

I've checked every part of every section and I can't find anything out of the ordinary.. hmmm...

Is there anyone you want to see compete in the tournament? Any matchups that would be awesome to watch?

I'd love to see Chris Voigt go up against Egoraptor

Mark-er has donated $25!

$375 to go :)

If the button does not work for you, you can directly donate through paypal with the email address: admin@munchymedia.com

Thank you Mark-er. The account should be fixed (had to remove and re-add the email for some reason).

I've donated $100.00 to kick-start the donations. Let's get this train rolling!
Our goal is to reach $500 in donations, which puts us to $400 remaining.
Thanks!

Anyone may enter, but keep in mind the viewpoint of the judges - I don't know how many of them know Spanish. It may be to their advantage to do a non-dialog piece.

We have not recieved any donations yet. This is upsetting, the folks at ABS donated more than this.

Adobe does not publish the events it sponsors and donates to. This is a legit contest that began in 2007, and Adobe software was donated last year as well - Ask Zeurel.

Copyright material of any sort is strictly prohibited and all entries containing them will be disqualified, their scores ignored. I am considering allowing each judge to select 2-3 entries to make it into the brackets, but asking them to score the (potentially) hundreds of entries we receive would be unreasonable within the 3-day judging window.

I do not take any sort of rigged voting lightly. I will review the top 32 scores and if a bad entry receives a high score (or a good entry a low score), then I may include or exclude any entries that show signs of vote-rigging.

A note to those who might attempt it: Getting into the initial brackets doesn't get you any prize. If you had to hire a vote-army to compensate your lack of animation skill, you probably won't get passed the first round in the tournament!

Thank you for pointing this out maficmelody

Tom, please explain to me how the feud was ended.

TOFA is hosted only on NG this year, the feud will never end.

The Adobe software has already been donated and cannot be changed.

@Elfman - What do you mean, "lesson"? (By the way we are not required to put the Adobe logo in entries this year either)

Tournament of Flash Artists 2011 Posted February 10th, 2011 in Animation

Greetings to one and all, flash animators from NewGrounds and elsewhere.
I bring to you the largest Flash Tournament, now being held on NewGrounds! We will soon decide who the greatest flash artist is for the year 2011.
The Fifth Annual Tournament of Flash Artists, 2010 (TOFA)
Sponsored by Adobe® and NewGrounds®

- Official Site (with Donations link)
- Calendar
- About

I would like to thank Tom Fulp for accepting, sponsoring, integrating, and donating to the competition this year. It will be truly epic.

Rules
- The Tournament, beginning on April 25th, will consist of One Open Round and Five (5) scored rounds.
- The top 32 average NewGrounds scores submitted by the deadline will be randomly arranged in the tournament brackets.
- The brackets can be viewed on the front page of the TOFA website.
- The highest score of each subsequent bracket pairing will move on to the next round.
- The winner of the Final Round will be declared "The Champion of Flash Artists" and recieve the majority of the prize.
- The runner-up will be awarded a smaller prize.
- As donations will be accepted throughout the contest, the total prize will not be announced until near the end of the tournament.
- As a TOFA tradition, the Champion must render a flash-drawn image of themselves interacting with Earth before a prize can be awarded. This is used to chronicle the winners of previous TOFAs on the website.
- The Champion must also possess a PayPal account or be able to accept a check through the mail in order to claim their prize.
- The Champion of Flash Artists may not enter the tournament in the year following their victory; However they are always invited to judge for the contest the following year.
- All participants must have a registered account on NewGrounds, as this is where all Tournament activity takes place and where submissions are entered.

Judging
Each round will be judged by a panel of five judges. (Tom Fulp, Eddsworld, Salty Peach, Zeurel, & the final judge is TBA)
For each entry, each judge will score each entry in five categories, for a total of 20 points from each judge.
- Animation (4 points)
- Artwork / Style (4 points)
- Originality (4 points)
- Story / Structure (4 points)
- Entertainment (4 points)
After all four judges have judged an entry, it will totalled out of 100 possible points. Highest total point value in any given matchup will be the winner and move on to the next round.

Donations
- Donations can be made on the front page of the TOFA website, using the "donate" button, or by clicking Here.
- 100% of donations (minus paypal fees) go to the total prize pool.
- You can donate at any time during the contest, even if you are participating.
- Those who "drop out" from any round in TOFA are encouraged to donate for the spirit of the contest.

Prizes
- Near the end of the contest, the exact prizes will be made clear, as donations are accepted througout the contest.
- The largest portion of the prize will be given to the Champion, while the runner-up will recieve a smaller prize.
- NewGrounds will be donating to the prize pool - This amount will be announced just as the contest begins.
- Adobe is also sponsoring the contest. Premiere CS5 and After Effects CS5 (for Windows) will be awarded.

We are now accepting donations!!

I will see you all in April, when the Open Round thread will describe deadlines, themes, and rules.
