He suffered what is known as a Pneumothorax, in his case a spontaneous one. It's where air gets into the chest cavity. I've had that happen tome 3 times.

He'll spend a week or so in hospital, then he'll have to take it easy for about 6 weeks. Not use his lungs too much. Other than that, he'll be fine. Just be there to watch them pull out the tube. Ask if you can look inside his chest cavity before they put the bandage over. Good fun, that is.
