problems:
- audio is slightly out of sync for some of the parts (may just be my flash messing up when publishing... currently unsure how to fix)
- newbie97's part is somehow preventing the parts after it to play properly
- my flash is still not allowing me to place the final two parts into the project (kembry and vlikevince's parts... it crashes every time I place them in the project..... vlikevinces part takes up a absolutely massive amount of data) (download link to the two parts ...clatform's part is there as well but I managed to sort it out, just delete its .fla after unzipping)

I've been struggling to sort it out for ages but I really don't think i'll be able to solve it myself :(

I'm currently uploading the .fla to mediafire so someone other than myself can take a look at it (upload is taking a while as it is a very large file)

If anyone thinks they can help please contact me as soon as possible

OMG I'm so sorry, I stuck stop(); actions like, everywhere. facepalm
Completely separate from that, I'm a much better programmer than animator and I'd like to get the source file to see if I can try to fix stuff with you.

I got a voice actor, Reaxrami to give me all the voices I needed so please do credit him, at least once I'm done if not now. (Unless he's been credited and I missed it) Also, I don't need a VA anymore.

I admit this is my first time adding sound in flash, so after you facepalm at my n00bness, can somebody please tell me which way is the preferred way to add sound to flash? Streaming or importing or something else?

And finally, should I contain my entire movie in a movieclip or is it just going to be it's own scene or something?

I could probably pull this off.

Ok I've got three kids who are barely audible in the background. They don't even have to be saying anything specific, just being all squeaky for about seven seconds. Two are little boys and one's a girl. Id say they're ages 5-8. Also now that I've started working on it, I realize I also need a sniff. Like, a single bored sniff. Hoped on the pc Waited for the dial up connection to kick in. Then hit game maker programs. Like the dumb p.o.s. that i am I installed Game editor. "Hurray!!!" My braid shouted in joy" Time to make a bad ass game." the program loaded up for joy and suddenly The brain went silent... Crickets chirped in the background while my mouth decided to ask this one question " How do you create a game."

Anyways i know this isn't really the section to post this in but the gaming section seems to talk about other already created games. And i truly want to learn. I have an idea about a zombie platform game where you are the zombie and gain certain abilities with each level.
If any one that knows how to do this gaming stuff and doesn't mind teaching a hopelessly not so smart individual such as myself the ropes. I would forever be in your debt.

I would do that in Adobe Flash. That costs money, but I hear a lot about some other Flash something which is apparently the same thing for free. IDK what it's called, sorry. But flash is definitely a good way to do that. You could also try collaborating with people who do have flash themselves, and you would be the writer. I can't find the free thing, but Adobe does let you try a free 30 day trial of Flash, and I'd be happy to advise you as you go.

That's software. It's one out of many possible. You need the game mechanics, so how the game will work. There's a menu for this that comes up when you press that. This menu will contain this. The game will be called that. People play by pressing this. Figure out what will do what. It could be hard to think of, so maybe try drawing a picture of what you want, and then imagining doing it and thinking 'ok they'd use these keys to move' and then 'they'd see health/lives/whatever in this corner. If they pause it'll look like this (another picture) and maybe what the menu would look like too.

You'll need art and sounds and music, plus a programmer (possibly you) or your game might get blammed if you upload it here. Those would come from other people. I suggest before you get excited and download flash's trial (if that's how it's going right now) that you have your ideas on paper or on a screen because it's very easy to have a clear idea but taking a while to properly express it, and you'd spend 30 days still thinking.

Hope that helped. PM me/reply to this if ya need meh.

I'm not sure why the discussion veered into the topic of programming and choosing a game engine. I can argue about the legitimacy of Newbie97's choice in not using a game engine, but that's not what this topic is about.

Perhaps the Writing Levels could portray the hurdles writers go through, whether on Newgrounds or in the real world, as they fight off evil publishers or even showing their ascension from battling through the Monthly Writing Contests we have here into being a published author.

Maybe as Deathcon mention, that "writer's block" could be an obstacle, maybe the first level is getting an idea, and the writer is inside his own head trying to capture floating and ripped pages of ideas.

Perhaps you can make a new thread? Free from the clutter here, giving some examples of what you're looking for, asking people whether you want just a story, or gameplay ideas as well, just so people have a direction to work with.

Thank you, I'm glad somebody gets me on here. I tried doing that once and it was deleted for 'spamming' so I'm trying to avoid re-posting this. The idea is good, of making it the writing process.

To add to discussion and give examples, what sort of process do writers go through? Should the level have multiple ways to solve it, like writing methods? Should it be narrated? Should everything be made of paper or maybe ink? There is a cartoon a nephew of mine watches called WordWorld, should it look like that, where the characters' bodies are made of the letters in their name? What aspect of writing should the atmosphere be based on?

A storyline is the main thing I'm after here, but if something seems like a writer-ey gameplay element that could go into the levels, don't hesitate to suggest it. Again, a 30-second cutscene with whatever you'd like, including voice acting, provided it isn't nudity or anything too inappropriate. Then it would be followed by four levels of your choice(s). There can be one long arc, or four independent stories. If you have an idea for one of the other NG jobs' areas, that would be cool too. I'm pretty open to brainstorming freely.

The gameplay elements I already have are a level beginning door, end door, and a closet where the player may put on clothes they've collected in-game, purely for character decoration. Also available are enemies which can either be shot or jumped on, depending on the story behind them. Checkpoints, switches, timed events, and non-audial in-game dialogue, maybe with NPCs, are also possible. The game has a level selection screen, so replay-ability can be on (or off) depending on what people come up with.

I hope I've inspired an idea in somebody.

I just want a storyline.

At 8/9/13 09:08 AM, Deathcon7 wrote: That being said, maybe the focus should be on character. The character is a writer trying to write a story but can't figure it out and instead goes through these surreal levels as he "lives" through the story he's going to write. Know what I mean?

See, that is what I'm after. If anyone can elaborate on that, it would be much appreciated.

:That's the deal right there. If the storyline is themed around artistry, then there needs to be an arc. The main character has to overcome the hurdles of section to develop a full product. So what are the commonalities (that'd be the basics), what are the bridging factors (that'd be intermediate gameplay), and what are the specific points (that'd be more advanced). These three fields should be revealed as the game progresses and build upon what's already been done.

Those are very good thinking questions.

At 8/8/13 08:50 PM, Deathcon7 wrote: I hate to be the first post and a cynic, but a platformer, even a portion of it, about "writers" makes about as much sense as an FPS about aglets.

It is not specifically about writers themselves, it is to be a set of four writer-themed levels. The question I am posing is of what various writers think a writer themed level would entail.

If you want to get real feedback, and maybe even some good ideas, give a bit more detail. Build a better platform off of which people can launch ideas.

Fair enough.

For example, what engine are you using? Flixel? Games Factory? Stencyl? Proprietary? If the latter, what kind of features are you building into it? How long is "one level" and what are the objectives of each level? What will be happening before and after this purported "writer's section?" Et cetera along those lines.

I am not using any particular game engine, this is in Flash CS3 using ActionScript 2. It is a two-dimensional sidescrolling platform game. The level lengths may vary from one minute worth of gameplay to ten minutes worth of gameplay. The objectives are what I am asking for. I am essentially asking for a plot for these levels, one which involves completing whatever objectives people suggest. Before and after this
writer's section, there are four others. The order I have can be changed if there is disagreement, but currently the writing levels are fifth and final in the game's level list.

The game is to contain a cutscene introducing a storyline themed around artistry and animation, then the corresponding four levels that actually contain the rest of that storyline. Next is programming, music composition, voice acting, and finally writing, followed by a final ending cutscene. Twenty levels total, five sections, four levels each.

It's commendable that you'd like to incorporate this section of Newgrounds into your project, but we're people of the minutiae. Without it we're about as useless as an FPS about aglets.

I hope I have answered your questions, feel free to ask more.

At 8/9/13 01:32 AM, Diki wrote: I'm not sure how the mechanics of that would even work, but you would definitely be more likely to get enthusiastic contributions if you posted a functional proof-of-concept. Right now you have an idea but nothing to back up your ability to complete a game, which is by far not an easy task. It would suck for someone to put in a bunch of effort to write something only applicable to your game, and then have the project be abandoned, y'know?

I understand that. I'm sorry that I don't have a proof of concept at the moment, I have only my words. There is a flash file that I and others have put work into, but I am having trouble accessing it now.

Not trying to put you down or anything, but I'd be wary of contributing when you don't have any submissions currently on Newgrounds. If you have games that you've made you should upload them to NG as it will be a huge boost to your credibility.

That makes total sense, and I see where you're coming from.

Either way: good luck with your game. I'll definitely check it out if you finish it.

Thank you.

A Platformer About Programmers Posted August 8th, 2013 in Collaboration

Programmers don't seem to have their own forum so I posted this here. I am making a platform game in flash, and I'm dedicating parts of it to different newgrounds' jobs. Programmers get a 30-second cutscene and 4 levels all about programming. The question here is of what to put in it? Do you have a certain story in mind? Should it be like the matrix, should there be a certain gameplay mechanic you thought of? should it look a certain way, have different controls, etc. Go crazy, if you want it you can have credit in the game for writing whatever you write.

A Platformer About Composing And Va Posted August 8th, 2013 in Audio

Well specifically, it's a flash platform game with different parts dedicated to different NG jobs, and voice acting gets a 30-second cutscene then 4 levels, and composing gets its own 30 second cutscene and 4 levels. So this is like two threads except I'm trying not to spam here. The question is what would you all think it should contain? You could make up a plot, you could come up with a soundtrack, and so on, any contribution. A platformer about (whichever job you do), what do you think it should contain? If you want you can ask for credit in writing the story, if yknow, you helped to write the story.

Also, please be specific about which you are referring to, VA-voice acting or MC-music composition.

A Platformer About Writers Posted August 8th, 2013 in Writing

So I'm making a platform game and there is a section of it dedicated to writers on Newgrounds. It is up to you guys what it will be about though. You get a 30-second cutscene and then 4 flash platformer levels after it, to work with. Should there be a plot? (I assume so) If so what would it be about? you can make up gameplay mechanics as long as they can be done in flash. If you want it, you can have credit as a writer in the game if you contribute to this.

Awright Writing Forum,
Wow meh!
