At 8/16/08 07:40 PM, Solraczeravla wrote: Ok then, try to flag an abusive review (it can be as ABUSIVE as you want), and then come back T_T

That will prove nothing. My whistle status won't go up or down on ONE review, dude. I could go flag a bunch of reviews, sure, but I have neither the time nor inclination to bother doing that just to prove or disprove your point -- I'll leave that to you lot.

What I'm saying is that in the time I've been here, I've seen this kind of thing happen a lot, and it never accomplishes anything by moaning. Obviously you're all determined to prove me wrong though and maintain that there is corruption in the system, or a glitch, or whatever it is that people are blaming it on these days.

You don't have to listen to me (I honestly don't care if you do or don't), but it's been said now, so you can't say nobody warned you when you still have a Garbage whistle in a few months because you've been complaining instead of just getting on with it.

Topic: The Whistle System Issue

Posted: 08/16/08 07:38 PM

Forum: Where is / How to?

I'm sure this exact same thing happens every few months: a few people lose whistle status and cause a HUGE fuss about it. I've seen it time and time again in this forum, and TBH it's getting kinda boring.

This thread will accomplish nothing. If all you care about is your whistle status, then just go back to flagging reviews to get your whistle back up, and confirm what is and isn't OK with review mods before you flag if you're unsure.

I had something similar happen to me when I first started using the whistle system. I was on a Gold whistle, then flagged a load of reviews of a spam alt which SHOULD have been cleared without any points (positive or negative), and the account put in line for deletion. Because it was the first time that kinda thing had happened, a review mod made a mistake and gave out negative points to all who flagged the reviews, so I went down from Gold to Normal. I didn't spend my time bitching at every available opportunity though, I just kept on flagging and after about 2-3 weeks I got my Gold whistle back.

You shouldn't be so quick to place the blame on review mods for this kinda thing. For all you know, you could have wrongly flagged stuff ages ago that only just came up for moderation, (reviews OR movies), and it's only now that you're losing points for it. I DUNNO. I don't care either, I'm just trying to help you see that IT IS SOMETIMES YOUR OWN FAULT.

I know people don't like to hear that, and if you're one of those people, don't bitch at me because of it. That's life. Sometimes you fuck up, sometimes other people fuck up, but at the end of the day the best course of action is to stop whining and get on with it. After all, it's only a picture of a whistle on the internet. If you really wanted to help the site out it shouldn't matter so much to you.

My dad had the new version of the Celica a few years ago, and it was pretty nice. Really low slung, though. Not really sure if it needed a 7-speed gearbox, but it had one nonetheless.

Also a LOL is in order as I just saw the episode of Top Gear where they try to prove that British Leyland is good... by filling their cars up with water and driving as far around the test track as they can get before the waterline goes below the bottom of their steering wheels. A pointless, yet hilariously brilliant test.

An amendment to this statement: the HTML version is actually - upon making further progress towards my next rank - slightly worse. Although the new rank fades in over the old one, the problem is that even once you've reached 99% you'll still be able to see the original badge in the background, which is kinda odd.

I guess the only actual solution to this problem would be to make it so that the old rank fades out whilst the new rank simultaneously fades in. Probably too much work for something this insignificant, and I know you're adverse to doing more work that is strictly necessary Casualty (as am I, tell the truth), but I'm putting it on the table.

All this makes my learning to drive experience a walk in the park on a warm sunny day. I managed to pass first time, which was a miracle, especially considering that all the guys in my year at school basically had a race to see who could pass their test first. I won but had massive pressure on me to pass first time or else suffer the endless snide remarks of my peers. Put those fuckers in their place. ;P

Whats your sport?

Rugby. I dunno how much you guys get of that in the US, but it's a great game, and definitely one of the better ones we get in the UK.

Do like to watch it or play it?

Both -- playing is very enjoyable and rewarding, and watching is also great because you get to kick back with a beer and shout at the TV, watching something you really enjoy.

Whats it like?

Pretty full-on, but totally worth it.

are you good?

Yeah, but I'd be even better if I went to training when I was still in high school. I'm planning on joining my university team, though, so I'm definitely going to be attending all the training for that. In fact, I'm already doing my own pre-season fitness regime to prepare me for the season.

Not a HUGE Star Trek fan, although I do like some of the TV series and one or two of the films. I doubt I'll go to the cinema to watch this, but I'll probably rent or buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Strange how many prequel movies are being done these days. I guess the script writers run out of new ideas so they go back to the beginning and start again basically.

That just seems faintly ridiculous to me. I guess because of all this modern stuff like identity theft, they HAVE to be 100% sure, but I'm sure it does get pretty exasperating. I was irritated by the amount of paperwork I needed to complete to get my license -- which admittedly seems minimal now compared to what you had to do.

It did SEEM a lot slower throughout the day, though... more like a steady trickle of submissions rather than a crazy explosion. I remember previous clock days being much more insane.

Still, in terms of all my past clock days, this one was the best in terms of save gains. My first clock day (2005) I got ~400 saves (I don't remember the exact figure); my 2nd clock day (2007 -- I missed the one in '06) I got 835 saves; and this one I got 1,131.

All in all, a good day for saves, but now we have to make sure that people are voting properly in the portal and not on a "clock day basis". Like I said before though, really looking forward to the next update of this list. :)

Hope everyone had a good Clock day. I managed to attain both 15,000 saves yesterday (in the morning, which you've all congratulated me for already), and right at the end of the day I got to 16,000 saves as well! Very amusing indeed.

I went up 6 ranks overall because of Clock day, and I believe that I'm on star pace for the next update, which will be a first for me. I suspect a fair few people will have star pace this week though. I know Bahamut has it for a start. :)

The only problem is that it's still a bit difficult getting blams today. People need to realise that when the day is over, no more savewhoring.

There isn't really much call for a preview button for regular posts. Most people's regular day-to-day posts aren't going to have an awful lot of HTML in them, so it's really just a case of spell checking. Some browsers even have a spell check function, so it's even easier in that case. All you really have to do is read through your post once to make sure it's all good to go.

In the rarer case that you're posting an HTML-heavy post, it is admittedly harder to check if and where you've made any mistakes. In that case, it's not a whole lot of effort to go to your user page and incorporate your news post as a screening function of sorts.

Perhaps there's no preview button so that people are discouraged from using loads of HTML in their posts... I dunno. Either way, I don't think it's entirely necessary because of the reasons above.

The guy left out that little detail. I don't see many people drinking 3.5% - 4% vol. beer these days. Most beers are about 4.5% - 5+%

A pint of stella (5.25% ABV), for example, is 3 units.

So basically, any beer with actual alcohol content is about 2.5 - 3 units. I'll bear that in mind -- I'm not driving at the moment as I didn't renew my insurance (having a car at uni = pointless), but still useful to know. I only used to have 1 pint when i was driving anyway, which is technically under the limit... still probably wouldn't pass a breathalyser though.

Being active in the flash portal =/= being active on the BBS. You can see that in about 2 years he's gotten less than 100 posts, so being level 23 in this case really has no bearing on his knowledge of the BBS.

Anyway, as has been suggested, copy it into a news post. What I do when I'm about to post a list update or something similar is have one tab for the text box to paste the post into, and another tab open on the 'manage news posts' section of my account options. As soon as I post the news post (with comments disabled, of course), I switch over to the 'manage news posts' tab, refresh it, then delete the latest entry (which would be the post you're previewing). If you keep the other tab open with the posted news post, you can still view it for as long as you wish, despite the actual news post being deleted.

Anyway, it won't be fixed by an admin, you can pretty much count on that. If you want to get out of Garbage, all you can do is start flagging again to try and get your whistle back up to Normal status.
