Y'know, Venom, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, early Mayhem, the "Black Circle", stuff like that... it's all good, but gimme the newer, more melodic and atmospheric stuff any day.
Yeah, Venom certainly paved the way for BM, or at least their themes. I'm a huge fan of theirs. I dunno if they really fit in with what evolved into the now-known BM sound, though.
Opeth (not really black, I know, but they've got some elements... OK, fuck it, they're off in their own league, so never mind)
Exactly, they have thrash, black, and death/melod all influencing what they play. Absolutely kick ass live band.
Dissection (who may be getting back together soon? Hopefully?)
2004 they'll have a new album and tour, I believe
I'm pretty much a posuer-type fan of theirs, I bought "Where Dead Angels Lie" and nothing else yet. Such an awesome band, as well. They've done an amazing thing with BM.
Emperor (newer, post-kill everyone days)
Heh, not into the keyboard-drowned days eh?
Dark Tranquility (or are they melodic death?)
A bit of each - they have their own thing mostly like Opeth, one of my favorite bands.
I really can't see what's so great about some bands, like Burzum... decent music, but Varg's a friggin idiot... Euronymous wasn't a saint himself, but for Satan's sake... ah, whatever.
Heh oh how much my one friend one absolutely despise you for that comment. Ah well, I love everything Mayhem has put out - I don't see Burzum as being anything important to them. I love his solo stuff though, too.
