Remember The Hare? It was made for a contest, as a design for a wallet. Didn't win. Shite. I was hoping for the prize money.

Response to: What is Art? Posted May 20th, 2011 in Art

Okay, I was constructing a serious and well-formulated response, but then internet explorer crashed and now I'm in a state of Fuck That.
Anyway, short version: Your question is wrong. You asked what a word with a lot of different meanings means. The only way to correctly (or semi-correctly) answer that question is to break it up in its different meanings and define those. The 'art' of your everyday-person doesn't have the same definition as the art you find in museums and the art periods books are written about, and the art you find in museums is not the same as (although comparible to) art for instance 'wild' tribes make, and that will not be the same as art that's made in a commercial setting. Find the different nuances and you will have a better overview. They're all connected, of course, but that doesn't mean they're the same.

The picture itself is rather famous called vase/face. You either see two faces or a vase. Enjoy!

I just did the thing, and aside from producing either two icky faces or one ugly vase, nothing really happened. I could still say the words, still draw, nothing.. Is that good or bad..?

Leave the exaggeration. It gives the piece personality. Your line work is classy, your color clean, composition quality, don't worry about getting 100% accurate anatomy. People spend way to much time worrying about nitpicking the ever loving fuck out of a piece's anatomy, and less thinking about how some wonkyness lends itself greatly to the style and feeling of a work or character. Perfect anatomy is for people going towards photorealism or exactitude, not for those making zany charactures of people. Your dude wouldn't look half as badass if that arm was correct, I say keep on truckin with your current style.

I agree and disagree with your post. I agree when you say people focus too much on anatomical correctness when exaggeration and 'wrongness' can just as well be part of a style (Had it myself when I was obviously not going for a 'correct' look..). I also agree exaggeration would work in this picture, it makes the guy badass. But I disagree with how the exaggeration was made. Something just feels really off, I think it was best if he made his bicep bigger than his shoulder instead of the other way around, or maybe it would feel more 'even' when you saw the other soulder too. The way he's positioned gives you the idea he's bent over with his shoulders forward, so it might feel more logical if we saw more of a front view of his chest and other schoulder.

Kewl style you got going on, although it could use some refinement here and there.

It's a really nice drawing and it's obvious you have talent as well as experience, but what the hell is up with that arm.. I'm sincerely confused by how you positioned your muscles. I know it's probably supposed to be an exaggeration, but in my opinion it looks too wrong to work.

I feel a bit stupid saying all this, because you're obviously pretty awesome. But the shoulder just bugs me a bit.

Overall, I didn't think I was going to get into animation, I thought comics were too low a form of art for me, I did think I was going to start popping out babies about now, and I'm not a vet nor an elephant, but furthermore I think I would be fine with who I am.

I smoke a spliff once a week. I have no problems with my lungs.

... I was obviously comparing the harmfulness of 1 sigarette with the harmfulness of 1 joint. When you compare those two, the joint is worse, regardless how often and how many you smoke. You won't get lungcancer from smoking 1 sigarette a week either..

Well, I would assume reducing pain would help one through the healing process, since being up all night with pain wouldn't really help healing, now would it?

Just pointing out some facts you've missed.

Oh jeez. Now you're seriously just looking for strands to hold on to. When I take an aspirin for my fever I don't say it 'cured my flu'..

What the fuck? Do a little research, anal bead. If that was the case, nobody'd get lung cancer from filtered sigarettes. Or I understood you wrong, or you kind of made a really retarded statement there.

So you claim it reduces pain and yet you claim that the OP's claim that it reduced his wrist pain is retarded. Nice logic.

You really can't read, can you? Since when is reducing pain the same as healing?

People like you make me sick.

No, I'm not a troll. I know marijuana is used to treat glaucoma, by lowering eye pressure. It isn't a cure, it's a treatment. How is that anything like a sprained wrist? And yes, it 'stops' pain from childbirth. In other words, it's a painkiller. It's mostly used as a painkiller, also a appetite-stimulant. Also, I said smoking weed. Chances are OP mixed weed with tobacco and that's a higher risk of lungcancer than a regular sigarette. People who use marihuana medicinally normally use a vaporiser to avoid harmful smoke and ash and to get the pure benefits. Hence, my last statement.

Why the fuck do I make you sick? Because I refuted a retarded claim from the OP? FYI, I'm all for legalising weed, even though I don't smoke and never plan to. Is that too difficult a concept for you to grasp, perhaps?

Response to: most likely to heal a wrist sprain Posted May 10th, 2011 in General

Smoking weed is not going to heal a sprained wrist. It's a painkiller at most. Thank you for informing us of your cancer-causing painkiller. I doubt you even used a vaporiser.

To clarify, that little glove we use is to keep our hands from sticking to the tablet so we can still make fluent lines, and to keep the tablet from becoming icky with sweaty palms. And also it's +3 charisma.

Oh my, your page layout and frames for your drawings are very confusing. I suggest leaving some space open between frames or at least have some more consistency in your layout. It's not because your frames look like parallelograms that it makes your comic more dynamic.. just more confusing. In a lot of places I don't even know what frame goes first. Try to give mostly one direction to your page layout.

On your second page, there is a drawing in which an explosion seems to be happening.. That's a pretty major event, but when you put another frame over it you diminish it's importance. You could have easily used 3/4ths of your page for that frame, especially if you're going for what seems like a manga-like style.
Your drawings are fairly good, though. Nothing a little more practice can't enhance.

So, yesterday I started my internship in the Belgian animationstudio Walking the Dog, and I was learning to draw some of the characters of a movie they're making. I almost started uploading one of my drawings, when I realised I probably wasn't allowed.. Movie in the making and all. Anyway, we're all given Wacom Cyntiq's, and that shit really draws awesomely. It's a bit odd to be able to almost count the pixels, but still. Cool stuff. Way better than a graphic tablet..

So, here's a quick and faulty pic I drew while I should actually be practicing:
(Honestly, it's the first time I coloured something in in Photoshop like that)

Response to: Pencil/Paper vs. Tablet/Photoshop Posted April 27th, 2011 in Art

I think it's different for many people, some are just instantly better at drawing in programs than at drawing on paper, for the reasons you describe: paper gets smudgy and you can essentially keep drawing digitally without messing up your drawing or underlayer. Plus, if you don't have a very steady hand (which you really need for 'real' drawing), there are ways in programs to resolve that or work completely differently. The problem there is then that you essentially don't learn to draw, you just learn to 'make' or 'adjust'. It depends on what you want for yourself, I guess.
I myself aaaalways go back to drawing on paper. I'm really sucky at sketching in programs, the feel of a tablet is still very different from the feel of a pencil on paper, I have a lot more control over pencils and pens than over my tabletpen. Hence, I almost always start from a hand-drawn sketch when I make something digital, just because my intuition is far stronger on that.

If you really want to be able to draw, I honestly think it's best you keep trying on paper, but you can use those drawings as a base to try and make a digital work out of it.
