So try to get the person 'into your fingers', draw him a couple of times from life, from a photo, untill you understand his structure and notice what stands out in his face. Then you can start to simplify and exaggerate.
AVAT robot entry!
My earlier idea was something completely different, and I wanted to try a more realistic looking approach. I just had the linework done when I realised that 1) it would take up an enormous amount of time to colour all that in with my lack of knowledge and 2) there were artists way better at realistic digital drawing than I am, so I thought I'd stick to my comic-y style and start all over.
It was only after it was finished that I saw it has quite the resemblance to The Iron Giant.. But I guess any kid with a gigantic robot will have that.
Wow. Only 10 points? That seems like there's not a lot of room for nuance.. It limits the points significantly and seems like you'd wind up with a lot of people having the same points and way more than 32 people going through. No?
Yep, it's a way of putting down a basic structure and it's a help for people who get lost in details and afterwards notice their drawing is completely out of proportion.
Also, breaking for instance a body up in different shapes like cilinders and balls and blocks helps some people with shading and form because it gives volume.
I got bored and just used the phrase "oy vey", so I drew a sad Jew.
But VividGrim, have you ever even seen manga and anime? I dare you to find anatomically correct boobs. These balloon-boobs are an often used exaggeration, and that's fine. This is a cartoon, not a model sketch.. I thought they were okay, even though I don't like giant tits.
Your colouring job also seems a bit flat, but the highlights make it look okay.
Anyway, the thighs are also verrrry balloon-ish. I understand you want to make her look muscular, but now she just looks like she has fat legs. In manga, even women who are physically very strong almost always look like slender supermodels. If you don't want to do that it's fine, but blowing up limbs will not make them look muscular. Muscles are never just ovals, they're complicated masses underneath skin. If you really want to make natural-looking muscular legs, you're going to have to study some anatomy.
I made you a reference picture again, but I drew the legs out of the top of my head, so they aren't anatomically correct and probably contain grave mistakes, but it's to give you an idea. So, as I said, if you want to make your bodies look believable, study anatomy and muscles.
(We've been talking about legs, but everything I said is the same for the whole body, btw.)
Agh, finally! My drawing's back up in the art portal.
So, uh, again, unnecessary linkity.
Also, thingamabob I made for the Notepad Drawing Collab.
Woops, uploaded a JPG instead of a PNG. Here's the right one.
My first one is done! I used a little artistic freedom with the actual line paper, but I hope it can still be approved..

Well that's a first.

Dayum, look at that tote bag.
If I fully understand what a tote bag looks like, I'm happy to report I've never been the owner of one.
Ah, okay. It kind of sucks since I wanted to show this one off, but what can you do. Anyway, thanks! I'm glad you liked it. The 'flattening' effect textures can have has its own charm though, methinks.
Um, clicking the link and thus the url to my new portal drawing is giving me a blank page for the last few hours.. Am I alone in this?
New portal submission!
I look like this. Mostly.
Is there a limit to how many drawings you're allowed to submit?
Welp, now that the 'how' is settled, I guess I'll join.
woop
Your overall anatomy seems to be relatively okay, considering the exaggerations.. boobs), but there are some things that cought my eye, mostly the joints. It's an often made mistake to make the joints like the elbow and knees the thinnest of the whole limb, while they actually stick out a little. They're little things, but the make quite the difference.
I uh.. made you a crappy drawn example.
Of course, the limbs I drew are kind of skinny and strong muscled limbs won't have such prominent joints, but they'll still stick out.
Um.. So how is it going to be? Actual artist vs artist like aigis said or everyone on their own? Actual artist vs artist isn't very fair indeed, if you're against someone pretty good you're out even if you did stand a chance, but on the other hand, it spices things up a bit.
I'm interested in joining, but I'm waiting for further information before I actually confirm, I think.
Well, seems like my thread has fallen rather silent. Or something.
Anyway, for lack of anything better, here's a tiny androgynous portrait.
It's alright, but the thing that botheres me the most is the nose. You gave her some kind of creepy Michael Jackson nose, like you weren't able to choose between a pointy manga-nose and one that actually has nostrils.
And indeed, highlights to the hair would give it a bit more life, plus, try making it a bit less.. stiff. As always, try and study your anatomy, it can never hurt.
But I kind of like your linework, it looks nice.

I can see why they would want to do that, but I doubt they could afford to do so and I strongly doubt that's even legal.

Well, here's an oddball idea: have you tried connecting online at all? That would probably help.
And... how does that explain how we were able to play offline for over two years without internet connection and suddenly have our games disappear from our gameslist? I doubt connecting to the internet would fix that last problem.
Erp.. I meant "Apparently, we can still open and PLAY the games ...".
We have a problem with our games we downloaded from Steam. We've had the oldest for over a year, but all of them suddenly had the same problem.
It started out when we tried to play Fallout 3. When we start our pc the same window that says there's no connection to the steam network always appears, but that's normal. Our computer is never connected to the internet. So, as always, we clicked 'start offline', but when we started a game, a little window saying "You can't play this game offline yet" comes up. With all of the games we downloaded from steam.
We restarted the computer a few times, didn't make anything better. So, we viewed our gamelist in steam.. turns out all of the games we had in there are gone. My borther logged into his online steam account, on there his games are still in his gameslist. The games are still on our computer, just not in the gameslist.
Apparently, we can still open and the games as long as we don't open them straight from our desktop or via steam. Well, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are playable that way, Fallout NV is still giving the "you can't play this game offline yet" sign.
What the hell is going on, and how do we fix this? Our computer is never connected to the internet, the last time was to download a game and was about 5-6 months ago.
Oh, maybe I'll try and participate. And then to choose, will I use this theme to work on a graphically interesting or pretty picture, or will my intellectual and atheistic tendencies take the upper hand and make a statement out of it?
Hm, the choices in life.
Yes, poor Hippo's grave is actually widely known throughout Ghent (his hometown) as the leaking bathtub.
Number two. Hippolyte could be an arse if he wanted to, and he wanted to most of the time.
Also, jail is totally a plus on your resume. For a politician. And a lawyer.
Comic time! I just finished a paper on a long forgotten politician/journalist/lawyer Hippolyte Metdepenningen, and since my teacher knew there wasn't much information to find on the bloke, she encouraged me to 'do something creative' with it.
Of course, comics!
Tiny bit of background info: Hippolyte was an anti-separatist, wanted to keep Belgium atthached to the Netherlands and Willem I was the king of Holland.
I realise these will kind of look like comics from 'Hark! A vagrant', but with my style, in black and white, and a comic about history.. It seems rather unavoidable.
(If you don't know Hark a vagrant.. Go find teh google, you ignorant savage)
So anyway, here are some comics about a guy nobody knows!
