Those are good points CamarH, there are also cases where people have used a motor vehicle & drove through crowds, or into a business where people were waiting. THe poison gas attacks in a Subway ...which I seem to remember from years ago was also in Japan.

So instead of the AVERAGE MAN -WOMAN on the Street going through the deprivation & economic hardship to appease the bankers like the Greeks & the Italians, the Spanish & Portugeuse & Ireland are dealing with, it came crashing down, property values crashed etc.

The crash & fallout went on for about 2 years & by 2010 economic contraction & unemployment ceased & then started to regrown ....so about 2 years .... compared to estimates of how Greece & Itally are looking at 5 to 10 years of their ruined economic engines !
& all of it because of unregulated banking & Industry & greedy politicians ....

So while I am unsure of whether Greece or any EU country could do the same, I believe if they 'leave' the European Union they then could default on the bankers.

Generally it seems Myself & JMHX don't see eye to eye on most stuff when it comes to financial investment , particularly precious metals against fiat currency ( what I often call unguaranteed colored pieces of paper).

Gold can be very volitile.

BUt there are a couple of things about gold as a portable store of value that makes it at times a good asset to hold.

1 - Through out mankinds history, gold has had value. It was valued by the ancient Chinese, the Egyptions, Mayan's , Romans, etc etc etc.

2 - Gold unlike a fiat currency has never devalued to zero.
No fiat currency has lasted for thousands of years & can be redeemed for goods today, which cannot be said about gold.

3 - When gold was actually used as money, in coin form, you could spend it in many different countries, even though the particular coins you had may not have been legal tender in the country, its gold content & value could be easily figured & changed to local currency if that was your wish.

Many paper currencies have come & gone, in a financial climate like we have been in for over 5 years, & now with zero interest being paid on some bonds, savings interest payments at fractions of a percent etc. The whole Euro teetering on the brink, American dollars only holding their own because of their petro dollar use & that now being eroded more each day.

There are some who believe having some gold (& in my opinion silver) along with other assets besides having everything in paper fiat currency & paper stocks & paper investments is a prudent way to ensure IF ....& it is a very hard to predict for sure ...but IF our main fiat world currencies become unacceptable as currency, having some precious metal's may allow you to come out of the economic crisis with something left of value, & unlike land or a business, it is portable if you need to go somewhere else !

Never ever forget a fiat currency, a stock certificate, a bond etc, is simply a promise to pay, not a guarantee. If a country goes bankrupt, its just like when a company goes bankrupt ,if hyperinflation or other causes to devalue a currency to a point where it is worthless & no one will accept it in trade for goods & services.

Something will rise out of the ashes, but the paper issued previously will not magically regain any value ... that won't happen to something like gold, silver, platinum, precious stones ...

I've got a water filtration system, I own a working well (along with a septic system) & I live on the Historic Subenacadie Canal/River system in Nova Scotia. While I don't yet have a wood gas generator I do have a wood burning heating system in my home, (means I keep warm without electricity or oil or gas being required)

I am capable of distilling alcohol from various sources ...but all I personally do at this time is make wines & beers & its for drinking, not to distill it to a more efficient alcohol fuel ~;p

I also own physical gold & silver bullion, as a hedge against inflation & the fact it has increased in value every year since I started collecting it more than 10 years ago !
