Well the design is relatively solid. A lot of it comes from the expression though, I imagine if he'd smile I would not see him as an asshole from the first glance. The clothing is formal, shirt is tucked, he looks like an office man. Glasses that are not in any way stylized or fashionable or anything - he is practical and not concerned with appearances much. It's harder to judge since it's a cartoony style which simplifies everything so there's not a lot of room for nuances in the appearance design, you have to bet on a whole shape and gesture of the character itself, and here it's not very defined and more vague but I imagine that's just a technical setback on your part which you'll get over as you practice.
However, there's not much to say about this guy. Visually he isn't striking as an important character, maybe more of a background. Is he important? Why is he a dick? Is he successful at what he does? I don't know any of those things from just looking at him. That's just my first impression.

Good luck man, keep working :)

Thank you for the helpful tips!

I'm trying to go for a more classic hanna-barbera style for reference. This guy here I plan making him more of an antagonist but still not a complete villian. He has sympathetic traits that people can still emphasize with. I imagine him being a dick because he's lonely and his best years are far behind him so he takes his anger out on his employees. I'd say he's s more of an annoyance and a background character; he's just a small hurdle for the protagonist to jump over in the story. I'm not sure of what other established cartoon character I can compare him too...maybe like Mr. BigHead in Rocko's Modern Life?

I hear you on him being a little too plain. I'll try to reflect a bit more of his personality in my next draft.

Tear apart my character design! Posted September 10th, 2013 in Art

Hi, I'm just starting out learning how to use illustrator, flash, and well, and the adobe suite basically. I'm trying to improve my craft so I'm just looking for some honest critique on my character designs. I know I have some trouble keeping the line work steady and smooth so any tips are greatly appreciated.

The character I did here is partially based on my grumpy gay manager where I work. I imagine this character to be a cynical asshole with the occasional one-liners and quips. (Just so you can get an idea of his personality and what I'm trying to aim for with this character). My eventual goal is to create a whole list of characters and start a little animated short to add to my portfolio.
