Hey guys,
There are lots of new features in this engine update. Go to the production blog to test them all out.

The hero reacts to hits, new enemy modes, cut scenes and a pause feature!
Joy!
lol, no, stem. It's cool. I admit it. All along, I did it only to piss him off.
.... and I hit the new topic button as opposed to the reply button. Well, everything is getting screwed up around here.
Click the link above to check out the new Master Lao Update with enemies that block, fight back, and are restrained on the stage without being able to walk off.
Cheers.
Enemies fight back! And they block hits!
Come check out the latest engine and help me debug this bastard!

Hee hee hee.
Watch out people, David and Goliath require some Zango download in order to work, and my spyware removers rank it as one of the highest threats. Browser hijacking, data mining, hard to remove, etc.
Too bad, too. DaG was kinda fun.
This is my first major attempt with object oriented programming. The process may be slowed a bit because I've decided to document the development step by step for those who are interested in learning game design. This entire game is modular, and can be assembled or directed by just placing a few function calls. I can add, delete and alter the different fighting moves, jump heights, and hit power of any character by adjusting a few constant values. Any movement outside of the animation is all actionscript. Even how the evemy rotates as they fly back from a knockout. Not only that, the code must be optimized enough to keep it from bogging down the PC. As of now, it sings at 40% of CPU performance.
It is an engine that will serve as the foundation for 'Master Lao vs the IRS' or any other sequel I create in the near future. So if it seems like it's taking a while, it's because each game feature has to be perfect and the code must be clean. I'll barely touch it once I start animating.
On the other hand, if you can create, test and debug 757 lines of code in 4 hours then what are you doing here?
lol, NO! That would take forever. I drew these all by hand, frame by frame. They're stick figures now because I'm building the engine. Once that's complete I begin the extensive task of creating the artwork, character design, and animation. You can get a taste of it be clicking on the link above the flash engine.
API? What is that?
I'll probably kick myself when you tell me.
Hey guys, check out the latest update to the Master Lao engine.
Now enemies will walk toward you and get up after being knocked down.
Happy bug hunting!
Aw crap, 24 hours later and my post has morphed into the opposite of it's original intent. This is like some twisted game of telephone where my opinion gets filtered through the ears of morons until eventually getting vomitted on the curb.
I don't know why in the hell this got so far off topic. I made my thoughts clear on how I thought it was wrong to put untalented, sensational crap on the front page. Yes, other flash pieces like pimp phone and what-not get lumped into that category, but this post was specifically about the Tsunami disaster. It brings down the merit that front page posts receive. I know McFretn spent a crap load of time and dedication making "CI: Unregulated." As did the authors of "Carious Welting" and "Sweet Mother of Vartan." Placing "Tsunami Loot Up" among them is a complete disrespect to their hard work.
This was never a competition to see who paid more money to Tsunmai charities. Tom may have donated a big chunk of cash (Wade), but that in no way answers to my original argument. In fact, I'd much rather have him stick up for his own actions than to have his brother do it for him. For those who think I'm two-faced for not donating a cent (YET) can read my bank statement (acct num's ommitted, of course):

I cannot give what I don't have, and it's been this way for a few weeks now. Again, being a student doesn't allow the kind of generosity I'd like to display.
Look, contraversial and sensational pieces are what started Newgrounds, but, unless you haven't noticed, Newgrounds has slowly evolved into a distinct community of dedicated flash designers and programmers. In 1999, seal clubbing and assasins were in. Now, it's about the developers. Why else do we have the Alpha's page? Why else to we have the NG Magazine?
To finish, and reiterate my point for the LAST time, I don't believe it's Tom's responsibility to delete offensive material, or to censor the portal. He gave that responsibility to the NG community through the whistle system. You can offend me all you want with controversial submissions. Keep the Bastards page for all I care, I never visit it anyway. He DOES, however, control the front page. He's used it to give hard-working artists the notoriety their pieces deserve. However, highlighting sophomoric work based on a sensational theme is an insult to the creative NG community. Not only is that a disappointment, but he lost my respect for posting a piece regrading the tsunami tradegy so soon to it actually occuring. Paying the charities with one hand and encouraging artists to mock it with the other discredits anything he does. Some NG users may question whether my respect is worth anything. Well, if one person in a community as large as NG puts up a fight, you'd better believe there's more of them out there who feel the same way. Respect is the hardest thing to earn, but the easiest to lose.
Admin, I'm sick of it all. Close this thread.
lilJim, this post is not about why I don't have enough cash to donate to charities. It's about how 2nd grade, insensitive crap gets ranked among the the Newgrounds elite, and how that makes Newgrounds more of a hostel for poor web content.
Believe me, LilJim, if I had money to give, I would. Life as a student leaves little excess to give to charity.

Jeez, iLLiCit_JmBd, iIs this fucking high school? The whole "I'm rubber, you're glue" comebacks died off in 9th grade.
Come back with something better. Unless you can't. Which is fine, becasue it makes sense that a total cunt like yourself would run away crying.
Yes, iLLiCit_JmBd, you're a big man for posting our IM comments on a BBS.
What else can you do? Can you point to where your testicles are or have they descended yet, you fucking pussy.
"One of the idiocies is this dumbshit rants about how horrible it is to poke fun at the tsunami when people insult saddam and osama when osama had good reason to attack, maybe not correct reasonings but he believed what he started was honorable."
This isn't about making fun of Osama or Sadam you fucking moron! Stick to the argument and get off your own high horse.
You people don't fucking get it, do you.
There's controversy, and then there's utter disrespect for human suffering.
I'd like to see you witness the stench of burying the bodies of thousands of drowned victims and come home with the same attitude.
This just isn't something you poke fun of. And you sure as hell don't admonish its creation by ranking among the NG elite.
I cannot believe you put Tsunami Loot Up on the front page. And don't think that giving it some passive title like "Oh the humanity! I'm not gonna touch this with a ten-foot pole," will save your ass from deserving the brunt of criticism this piece of shit has received.
What the FUCK were you thinking?
I don't get it. You built the whistle system to keep sick crap like this out of the NG Archives. But on the day it comes out you show your support for this arrogant behavior by plastering it on the front page???
You have any idea what this does? It encourages low life scum like Alex to throw tact and decency aside and create these flash pieces that mock tragic events for the extra attention. This isn't a display of animation talent or intelligent game design. It's a worthless attempt for people like Alex to get their name in the spotlight by standing on the pain and sufferning of millions of people on this planet!
I know people who have lost family members, Tom. This is REAL LIFE! India, Africa, and Sri Lanka have just experienced over 150,000 deaths in ONE DAY. That's the same death toll as seventy five 9/11 disatsers, yet YOU ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO MOCK THIS TRAGEDY BY PUTTING THEIR WORK ON THE FRONT PAGE??? Outside of it's sensational theme. there's no merit to this piece in the first place. The engine is weak and graphics look like a toddler doodled them with their diaper on a stick!
My respect for you has been destroyed. You've compromised all of the hard work you've done with Alien Hominid and soured the accomplishments that this site has granted to it's community members. The least you could do is post an apology, though I doubt that will save enough face.
LOL! Good job, thanks for the screen shot. I doubt that the real game will have around a hundred enemies spawned at once, I think the highest combo I'll even program in will be 13. But hey, 63 isn't bad at all.
:D
Thanks for the kind words.
Not to worry about the easy kills and lack of enemy AI, those features will come later. I make periodic updates to the engine. Let me know if you have any cool ideas or critiques.
:)

Hey guys,
I've updated the engine on Master Lao vs the IRS. Check the Master Lao production blog and watch this game being developed step by step.

Feel free to leave comments/suggestions.
:)
Well, I have always thought a few modifications would be cool:
1. Perhaps you can make a user-nominated section on the front page. Not only do we vote to determine the overall score of a NG submission, but maybe we could also flag a movie/game for a front page nomination. I've seen a lot of great NG posts that haven't truly received the exposure they deserve. Have the server tally up the nominations at the end of the day and poof, there you go. Call it the NG Users Award or something.
2. More control over the Alpha's page. I think the Alphas Page has more potential than people think. Let us edit our Alpha page by adding updates, answering user questions/suggestions, polling what content users would like to see in the final piece (etc.). What would be sweet would be to see a kickass game/movie on the front page, discover that it has listing in NG Alphas, and have the oppurtunity to see how it was made and who influenced its creation. I have a blog that I use to show how my game, Master Lao VS the IRS, is coming along (http://www.mondomaniatrics.com/blog/masterlao). This is sort of an example that I'm talking about. Also, giving us the ability to delete an Alpha page would be good. Sometimes, projects just end up souring. There's no reason to keep people's hopes up for a dead feature. Hell, I've been waiting for Pico 2 since forever ;P.
3. More attention to flash developers. NG is frequented by thousands of talented artists and programmers every day. Why not add some forums that they can better relate to? An artist's corner to showcase talent (already mentioned earlier I think), advanced Actionscript for gaming, the Animator's corner (for featuring frame by frame showcases or how to's), backend programming, etc. NG is primarily used for displaying final projects. I'd like to see NG become more of a community where people come come to learn. Besides, the Flashkit forums are drying up fast.
4. It was a great idea in the past, but I don't know why you haven't gone through with it: An NG user account that we pay for. Everyone is entitled to a free Newgrounds. But, god damnit, if it takes paying two bucks a month for a special membership to keep the porn ads off of my machine at work then so be it. If you keep the cost low, the amount of people who enlist should outweigh the revenue you earn on the porn. Don't get me wrong, I love a little hentai now and then, but having the boss walk in on those bastard ads makes it too risky to watch NG at the office.
5. It'd be nice if I could be notified by email when people respond to my posts at the NG BBS.
6. This may be too much, but could you place a user preference in the profile to only view graphic ads? I have noticed that the flash ads can diminish or slow the playback on some movies.
7. This may sound pretentious, but it would be sweet to have an NG-elite section. This section is devoted to and can only be accessible by the top animators and game designers on NG. Only those who've scored a high average on all of their submissions; racked up a quota of daily trophies, exceeded a certain experience point level (9+) could view the site. Even if it's just a message board or a chat section. I'm sick of wading through hundreds of submissions/questions/comments made by noobs. God knows we're here for them, but sometimes I feel like kickin' it with the pros.
8. Purely for my own interests: Set up a notification system to let users know that they're about to watch a stick flick. I'm sorry, but I just can't STAND stick figure movies. Knowing about it before hand would really save some time on my end. Then again, some people LOVE stick flicks, so knowing that the movie/game they're about to view would get them even more excited.
That's about it. Wow, this post is long. Hope this inspires some new ideas. But please finish "Pico 2" and "Dad and Me" before getting side tracked by anything else.
Keep up the fantastic work!
Most of it, I'm tying most of what I learn at school into this engine.
Hey guys,
I've set up a production blog for a game I'm developing called 'Master Lao VS the I.R.S." Head on over and let me know what you think! I keep a weekly update of game engine features and updates. You can view the most recent engine update by clicking the link on the left hand side of the screen once you get there.
You can check out the alpha entry on NG Alphas if you like.
The lower, softer one, definitely. Gives it a more ominous feel.
Good luck!
Sorry, screwed up on my end. With all 3 browsers IE, Firefox and Mozilla.
Wonder what it is?
