Response to: How do you animate detailed Art? Posted January 10th, 2009 in Art

I use flash alot and I'm quite good a programming and alright at animation, but only simple animation. Obviously as you can see, I can draw. But I cannot animate something like that... Do you have to do it frame by frame? I'm used to tweening everything in flash but I've only animated simple things. Things like the one I have below I cannot animate using tweens, that's just impossible. But if I did it frame by frame, it would be possible, but I would be drawing the same thing over and over and over again, just from different angles. Is that really how it is done? It would take me forever to do 1 minutes worth of animation.

Cheers,
Faxmunky

You could animating using tweens but you'd have to cut the picture into different pieces (hair, eyes, mouth etc.) But if you decide to do it fbf you should probably know that: 1. fps in anime is quite low(obviously to reduce the amount of work) and 2. the animators loop some parts a lot. Like when a guy walks, the animator would only animatio 1 or two steps and the loop it. Also the mouth movement and lip sync is anime is very minimal

I drew something that I think is okay, but I want some honest opinions (no sugar coating! lol) and what i can do better.
I'm not much of an artist, but wanna do all i can to improve.

If it is truly the worst piece of art you have ever seen, explain why.
I'm more interested in that than anything else.

Enough with the babbling, here's the picture!

I don't like the fact that it's blurred
plus, it seems to me that you spent more time on the effects rather than the actual drawing
which, in my opinion, should be the other way around

I used to do shit like that on PowerPoint

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'm trying to come up with a way to keep the same level of detail with the coloured version too.

My first impression was that they seemed like blue-print designs, but on second take they could look a whole lot like constellations. How about using a simple line colour scheme and thicknesses, rather than filling in with colour?

I thought about that but I've spent so much time on the graphics that it would seem dumb to suddenly change it all into simple lines.. But if I ever get this project done I migh just try that

I didnt think the colors was bad, i was talking about the design. I just think that the player's ship should be something awesome to look at, considering you will look at it the entire game.

indeed my good sir

It'll be awesome, trust me

My only problem is the ship thats the players ship ? PLEASE beef it up a little, make it look a little more fearsome at least, because there is no way i would consider that small ship carrying a strong enought gun to scratch the enemy.

Well, on my defense
the JPG color quality isn't doing any good..
in flash the colors look very bright and strong
but as I explained in my previous post, yes, I'm going to beef it up

I'd rework the ship if i was you.

Appalling is a strong word :O
The player is actually one of the only objects in this game that have a WIP form or look that I created in the very beginning just to get to the scripting part. So you'll probably see some changes in the ships design. Don't worry ;)

gives it that... geometry wars vibe, But, it's your choice.

is it top-down or sidescroller? because the crab looks like it's seen top-down, and the others are on their side.

It's a sidescroller alright
the crab wasn't actually supposed to be a crab at first
but the original design failed so I turned it into a top-down crab

I'm not sure if it's going to stay like that
atm I can't be bothered to change it :)
I personally think is fits in just fine with the rest of the crew
but this is exactly the kind of feedback I need to decide

so thanks!

thought I'd post some colors anyway since the previous pic didn't look as cool as it was before the bloody compression

Space Shooter Project Concept Art Posted January 4th, 2009 in Art

This is a small preview of a game that I'm working on. It has three enemies: small enemy spaceship, a turtle looking machine witha huge cannon and a crab looking thingy. The other two enemies aren't as detailed as the crab one but that'll change eventually

This pic was taken in the 'view outline' mode, so this isn't exactly what the graphics in the game are. But you get the idea. The reason for the outline view is cause I haven't decided the final colors yet

So whadya think?

Btw are there any background artists interested in doing some dreamy space bg's or nightime cities?

I think people should write a description
or tell WHY the pet is perfect
instead of just posting a random picture of
an animal/robot/superhero/lame internet joke/bitey's head
or a motherfucking smiley

Okay, to be more specific:

The game stuck every fucking second when I move
It shouldn't do that

Well it kinda does. The mouth movement/animation is reeeally buggy and annoying

The sprites look bad
I wanna re-do them

Do that

The design (menu and time) is really bad
Did you see the title: WIP

It's called critique
no need to get offended

Set a fucking timer instead of some stupid fail bar.
What do you mean? If it's a time bar, there can only be one level. This way, there are multiple levels

What? Why would you think so? You can have a seperate timers in each level.
And yes, failbar describes your way pretty accurately

Okay that's all, I hope my comment wasn't too offensive!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YOURE SO FUNNY!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

shutup and get back to work

set the bullet.x = player.x and bullet.y=player.y

and made a tween for the bullet for his bullet.x to the mouseX
and the same for the y position

That doesn't make sense to me at all

Flash CS4 Professional costs £562.35
if the price seems outrageous
think of it as an investment.
Flash is a professional software that people use to make a living.

I recently bought the new version. I had to save a little money
but so far it's been worth it.
